Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren, née Ericsson, (1907 - 2002) was a Swedish children's book author and screenwriter, whose many titles were translated into 85 languages and published in more than 100 countries. She has sold roughly 165 million copies worldwide. Today, she is most remembered for writing the Pippi Longstocking books, as well as the Karlsson-on-the-Roof book series.

So basically Ur-Pippi is the original manuscript of Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking (the manuscript that was rejected by Bonnier, and which after its rejection, Astrid Lindgren then massively edited and subsequently sent to a contest sponsored by Rabén & Sjörgen, where she promptly won first prize, and had the book published with as we all know lasting international success). And yes, both Astrid Lindgren's narrative and Ulla Lundqvist's enlightening accompanying commentary are translated from the Swedish by Angelika Kutsch, who is an internationally renowned translator of Swedish literature into German (and indeed talented children's author in her own right, especially of so-called girls' fiction). But after now having now read and very much enjoyed Ur-Pippi, I actually do kind of wish that Astrid Lindgren had in fact not edited and removed quite as much material as she did. For there are so very many deliciously and bitingly, massively funny instances of adults behaving badly and in a disrespectful manner, with Pippi always soundly and often even rather nastily trouncing them all (and oh so many of these instances have unfortunately been redacted if not removed). Pippi repeatedly, without much pity punishes and unmasks nastiness, and like a Medieval or Renaissance jester (trickster), holds a revealing mirror to society, and demonstrates to the adult world what children often tend to think of its cornucopia of rules and regulations (and that if you are disrespectful and behave badly and abusively towards children, you will and should be approached with equal and at times even increasing levels of the same).

Furthermore the original manuscript presented in Ur-Pippi also contains (or rather, it contained) a rather goodly number of parodistic songs. And again, I do wish that Astrid Lindgren had kept at least some of these intact whilst editing, as they are really quite massively entertaining. However, I actually do and can also understand why she decided to remove these. Parodies, while funny, are often only funny if one is actually familiar with the originals being parodied, and that is unfortunately not always the case and thus, the humour can be lost, leaving the reader a bit perplexed and potentially unsatisfied. However, be that as it may, and after having read the comical songs of Ur-Pippi, I now miss them whenever I reread Pippi Longstocking, or even think about Pippi Longstocking, both as a character and as a work of fiction.

Also and definitely both intriguing and enjoyable (and of course for me especially and specifically ) is that throughout the narrative, throughout the text of Ur-Pippi, there are equally a number episodes that quite strongly remind one of L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series (especially the first book). And a prime example thereof, in the narrative sequence where Pippi is supposed to be taken to an orphanage, and ends up playing tag with the policemen, in the original manuscript, there are two rather stately and arrogantly self satisfied adult dignitaries sent along to talk with Pippi. These two massively obnoxious individuals not only act very high and mighty and holier than thou, but also insult Pippi's looks, especially her red hair (very similar to Rachel Lynde insulting Anne Shirley's red hair, except that in Ur-Pippi, Pippi is not devastated like Anne was at the insult, and also has no issues with her hair being red, and thus, Pippi just pays the adults back with equal insults about their own looks, and for me, it really and truly is unfortunate that this part ended up being removed from the manuscript, from ). And finally, Ulla Lundqvist actually points out in her excellent commentary that the Anne of Green Gables series was one of Astrid Lindgren's favourites, and that she believes Pippi's red hair (as well as her imagination) are meant to be somewhat of an homage to Anne Shirley, to Montgomery's most famous literary creation (which makes me now appreciate Pippi Longstocking all the more, seeing how much of a personal and all time favourite L.M. Montgomery is and always has been with me).

Hej, liebe Freunde von Pippi!
Die meisten Leute glauben, dass die Bücher über Pippi Langstrumpf und ihre Abenteuer von Astrid Lindgren ausgedacht und geschrieben wurden. Das ist nicht ganz falsch. Aber auch nicht ganz richtig. Das vorliegende Buch, Ur-Pippi, enthält angeblich die allererste Fassung des ersten Pippi-Bandes. Die wahre Quelle für diesen Text stammt aber nicht von Astrid Lindgren, sondern von jemandem ganz anderes, und zwar von Pippi Langstrumpf selbst, wie nachfolgende Geschichte beweist.


UR-UR-PIPPI

Tommy und Annika konnten es kaum erwarten, Pippi Langstrumpf zu besuchen. Die beiden Geschwister eilten durch den Garten der Villa Kunterbunt und stürmten die Treppe zur Veranda hinauf. Wie gewöhnlich stand dort ein Pferd und wie gewöhnlich war die Eingangstür nicht verschlossen. Die Kinder gingen ohne anzuklopfen hinein und entdeckten Pippi in der Küche. Auf dem Herd standen zwei riesige Kochtöpfe, in denen es blubberte und brodelte. Offensichtlich war Pippi dabei, eine gewaltige Menge Suppe zu kochen. Ein weiterer Topf, der aber leer war, stand auf dem Boden. Pippi hatte den Inhalt des Topfes auf den Küchenfußboden geschüttet. Sie saß im Schneidersitz daneben und sah gedankenverloren auf die herumschwimmenden Teile der Suppe.

„Was tust du da?“ fragte Tommy.
„Wenn ich sage, dass ich dabei bin, ein Buch zu schreiben, so glaubt ihr mir ja doch nicht, oder?“ erwiderte Pippi.
„Da hast du wohl recht“, sagte Annika. „Ein Buch schreibt man schließlich nicht mit einer Suppe.“
„Na, das wollen wir doch mal sehen“, meinte Pippi. „Immerhin handelt es sich um eine Buchstabensuppe. Und aus Buchstaben macht man ja wohl ein Buch. Das hört man ja schon am Namen.“ Ihre Augen leuchteten als sie mit ihrem Finger einen der herumschwimmenden Buchstaben aufpickte. „Ein P“, rief sie entzückt. Sie drehte sich zur Wand und klebte das P auf die Tapete, wo sich bereits eine Anzahl weiterer Buchstaben befand.
„Warum nimmst du nicht einfach Papier und Bleistift? Das wäre doch viel einfacher“, sagte Tommy.
„Für dich vielleicht, mein karierter Freund. Aber ich kann ja nicht so besonders gut schreiben und es kommen immer wieder Buchstaben, die dann doch nicht so passen, wo ich sie hingesetzt habe und die esse ich dann einfach auf. So kann ich ein Buch schreiben und werde auch noch satt dabei.“ Sie starrte wieder auf den Boden. „Vielleicht könnt ihr mir ja mal helfen. Ich brauche noch ein P und dann ein I. Ich will nämlich meinen Namen schreiben. PIP hab ich schon. Aber die P werden immer weniger.“
„Was ist das eigentlich für ein Buch, das du da schreiben willst?“ wollte Annika wissen.
„Eine Bigraffi“, erklärte Pippi stolz. „Das ist ein Buch über mich, das von mir selbst geschrieben ist. Toll nicht?“
„Du meinst wohl eine Autobiografie? Wenn man seine eigenen Abenteuer niederschreibt nennt man das Autobiografie“, sagte Tommy.
„Ja genau. So etwas meine ich. Eine Pippigraffi. Habt ihr jetzt noch ein P gefunden, oder nicht?“
„Noch nicht“, sagte Annika. „Aber da schwimmt ein B.“
„Was soll ich denn mit einem B anfangen? Schließlich heiße ich doch nicht BIBBI, du Dummerchen.“
„Aber aus einem B kann man doch ganz leicht ein P machen, wenn man unten etwas abknabbert“, sagte Annika, nahm das B und zeigte Pippi, was sie meinte.
„Wunderbar!“ sagte Pippi. „Jetzt geht’s vorwärts.“ Sie klebte das abgeknabberte B, das jetzt ein P war, auf die Tapete und begab sich auf die Suche nach einem I. Während Tommy sich nun ebenfalls auf den Boden neben Pippi setzte um ihr bei der Buchstabensuche zu helfen, ging Annika zur Wand. „Ich will doch mal sehen, was du schon geschrieben hast“, sagte sie und begann zu lesen:

„Aber das ist ja voller Fehler! Und die R sind alle verkehrt herum!“ sagte Annika, nachdem sie den Text gelesen hatte.
„Na, wenn schon“, sagte Pippi. „Das stört keinen großen Geist. Ich hab doch gesagt, dass ich nicht so gut schreiben kann. Und wie rum ein R geht, ist doch wohl egal. Du siehst doch, dass es ein R ist. Und außerdem schreiben die Leute in Russland alle das R so wie ich.“
„Aber die Fehler solltest du trotzdem berichtigen“, meinte nun auch Tommy. „Die Leute wollen doch sonst dein Buch gar nicht lesen.“
Pippi schaute traurig zu Boden. „Wenn ich gewusst hätte, wie viel Arbeit das ist, hätte ich gar nicht erst angefangen. Das ist ja fast noch schwieriger als eure blöde Plutimikation.“
„Ich habe eine Idee“, sagte Annika. „Nächstes Wochenende kriegen unsere Eltern Besuch von einer Dame aus Stockholm. Sie kommt einmal im Sommer zusammen mit ihrer Tochter Karin zu Besuch bei uns. Und weiß du was? Sie hat schon selbst Bücher geschrieben und weiß, wie das geht. Die werden wir fragen, ob sie deine Pippigraffi mal richtig schreiben möchte. Was meinst Du? Ihr Name ist Astrid Lindgren.“
„Sie soll ruhig kommen“, sagte Pippi. „Oder auch nicht. Ganz wie sie will. Ich zwinge niemanden. Es könnte aber sein, dass ich am nächsten Wochenende gar nicht hier bin, sondern woanders. Das kann man nie so genau wissen. Dann soll die Dame Lindgren einfach die Tapete mitnehmen und das Buch selber weiter schreiben. Ich glaube, mir ist das sowieso zu anstrengend.“


Und genau so geschah es dann auch.

Who doesn't know Pippi Longstocking by the way?

I spent my childhood 6,000 miles away from Sweden, the country where the author lived, and still I am familiar with most of her fabulous children stories.

Pippi Långstrump (in Swedish) or Pippi Langstrømpe (in Danish) is almost like an icon in the child world. The red-haired kid with a monkey who lives alone in a small town of Villakulla (I believe it's translated into "crazy village") is familiar to people from all ages.

But this ur-pippi is something different - so they said. This book is actually a compilation of several manuscripts that Lindgren typed herself to give to her daughter on her tenth birthday. This, to say, is the very first book of Pippi ever made since Lindgren used to tell the adventures of Pippi right from her imagination and never bothered to write it down.

This book is containing several different stories starting on how a girl named Pippi suddenly came to live alone in a house on the corner of the street. Her father, who was a sailor, disappeared in the sea and her only companions were her horse and her monkey named Mr. Nilsson. The witty and strong Pippi (she could lift her own horse and move it around) later met the neighbours' kid Tommy and Annika and became the best of friends with them.

I read this book in Danish, which doesn't differ so much from Swedish, and I could feel how funny and enjoyable to be able to read this book in the (near) original language because Pippi often threw jokes that would be completely lost if the book was translated into other languages than the Scandinavians.

For example there was time when Pippi encountered two men who wanted to rob her (she had tons of golden coins in her house) and these men pretend to ask what time it was (Hvad er klokken? - which can be directly translated to "what is the clock?"). She scolded these men for not knowing what a clock was. She later explained to them that a clock is a device people use to tell time! It was quite hilarious to see these kind of "childish" jokes scattered throughout the book and it was more than just "entertaining".

This book brought me back my childhood which I had (almost) forgotten in the past 20 years of being adult :)

Vor kurzem erst habe ich mal wieder "Pippi Langstrumpf" gelesen und bin dann in der Bibliothek auf die "Ur-Pippi" gestoßen. Das Buch gliedert sich in 3 Teile: eine (sehr kurze) Einleitung von Lindgrens Tochter, darauf folgt das Pippi-Manuskript, so wie es damals von Lindgren eingereicht und schlussendlich vom Verlag abgelehnt wurde, und zum Schluss eine knappe Analyse von Ulla Lundqvist.
Die ursprüngliche Pippi ist streckenweise sehr unterschiedlich zur finalen Buchfassung. Die Geschichte insgesamt ist deutlich aggressiver, anarchischer, einige Szenen sind stark verändert, es sind viel mehr Gedichte und Lieder enthalten und der Blick auf die Erwachsenen ist noch ein Stück schonungsloser als in der revidierten Fassung. Auch Pippis Charakter ist durch viele kleine Details verschoben. Hier tritt sie teilweise fast schon gemein und herablassend auf. Und trotzdem, mir persönlich gefiel die "Ur-Pippi"-Geschichte tatsächlich sogar besser als die Pippi, die ich bisher kannte.
Lundqvist liefert im dritten Teil eine solide Zusammenfassung sowie Gegenüberstellung der beiden Pippis. Sie spricht die Streichungen und Kürzungen an, sowie auch Lindgrens Intentionen aber auch wie Kinderbücher als solches gesehen wurden zur Zeit Lindgrens. Ich hätte mir da ruhig noch etwas ausführlicherev Informationen gewünscht, aber wahrscheinlich hätte das zu weit geführt.
Auf jeden Fall ein sehr interessantes Buch, nicht nur für Pippi-Fans. Definitiv eine Empfehlung!

På något sätt tyckte jag bättre om Pippis interaktioner med vuxenvärlden i denna samtidigt som jag föredrar Pippi i det "slutgiltiga" manuset då hon är lite för elak utan anledning i denna... men lite mer uppkäftig på ett sätt som jag inte har något emot.

Ein spannendes Buch. Gerade für mich, als noch unveröffentlichte Kinderbuchautorin, ist es motivierend zu lesen, dass selbst Astrid Lindgren mit Pippi Langstrumpf abgelehnt wurde. Außerdem finde ich es sehr interessant, was in der veröffentlichten Version alles geändert wurde.
Die Autorin Ulla Lundquist ordnet das Werk in die Zeit ein und vergleicht die beiden Versionen sowohl vom Inhalt bis hinunter zur Wortebene. Damals war es noch üblich Kinder mit viel Gewalt zu erziehen und Astrid Lindgren eine große Gegnerin davon. Deshalb ist die Ur-Pippi noch rigoroser gegenüber Erwachsenen. Einige Reimereien wurden gestrichen, die teilweise schön quirlig sind.

Kesällä Vimmerbystä ostettu ja nyt viimein jotakuinkin suoritettu. Kiinnostava, mutta rajoittuneisuuteni ruotsin kielessä asettaa haasteita nautinnolle. Kysymyksessä on siis Peppi Pitkätossun Bonnier-kustantamolle tarjottu versio, jonka Bonnier kuitenkin hylkäsi. Yllättävän suurelta osin teos on yksi yhteen sen sittemmin Raben&Sjögrenin kustantaman kanssa, mutta Pepin hahmo on tässä kyllä hetkittäin kovempi ja ilkeämpi. Kirjan alussa Astrid Lindgrenin tyttären Karinin esipuhe ja lopussa Lindgren-tutkijan selvitys tästä alku-Pepistä.

"-Kanske man rentav borde plocka lite svamp, sa Pippi och bröt av en vacker röd flugsvamp. -Jag undrar, om det går att äta den, fortsatte hon. -I varje fall kan man inte dricka den, så mycket vet jag, och då har man inte mycket annat att välja på än att äta den. Kanske det går!"

Häftigt att få möjlighet att läsa orginalmanus och slutkommentarerna är väldigt intressanta. Ett måste för Lindgren - älskaren!
