The Upheaval

Rate this book
This is the first novel in Konkani, a persecuted and near-fugitive language in India, to be translated into English. It tells of a traditional, agrarian village in rural Goa that makes its first contact with a modern, mechanized way of living.

Pundalik Naik's writing is richly atmospheric and incisive. His prose gets under your skin. Anyone trying to see this narrative from the classical prism will find flaws in the story.. But the point here is the telling.. The world of this story is too real for you to escape it even after you are done reading.

This might be the only book you ever read that was originally written in the Konkoni language of Goa, India. It's short, entertaining, and it says a lot. The English translation flows very well. Kudos to Oxford University Press for doing these translations.
