The Fourth Wexford "Wolf to the Slaughter", "Put on by Cunning" and "Speaker of Mandarin" 4th Rendell, Ruth
Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Babergh, CBE, who also wrote under the pseudonym Barbara Vine, was an acclaimed English crime writer, known for her many psychological thrillers and murder mysteries and above all for Inspector Wexford.
I like Rendell mysteries, but this one I just couldn't follow. The writing leaves far too much for the reader to guess at (like how one character seems to magically jump from one place to another) to get comfortably stuck into the mystery. After three attempts, I abandoned it.
Uhhhhhmmmm, well, I think this was written in the late 70s, in England, by someone longing for even older times. It's sorta depressing, because it's suburban, and everyone is a bit too polite to ask the suspects direct questions. As a historical vignette, it's quite amusing, but not a romp of a murder-mystery omnibus. If you are 6.5 months pregnant and having sleep issues, anything will do.
I hated the first omnibus. Couldn’t understand the raving. By no2 I was hooked. Love this too. Terrible accuracy I expect but such a good story it doesn’t matter. Will miss Wexford. Update. Just looked. There are more.....Yay.
