ENGLISH: I have read this book four times in a Dutch translation ("De bamboe dokter"), and now once in the original English. In his first book ("Deliver us from evil"), Tom Dooley narrates his work with the refugees fleeing from North Vietnam after the partition of the country, most of them flying from religious persecution. In this his second book, he fights human illness due to ignorance, undernourishment and lack of medical attention in Laos.
In some sense, it is less distressing than the other, for we tend to feel worst when misfortunes are caused by human beings. But we must take into account that we are also in some sense responsible for ignorance, undernourishment and lack of medical attention.
Dooley shows he doesn't have time to correct his books. His time is obviously occupied in helping sick people. I refer to the fact that this book shows some repetition (as when he tells twice about an officer of the Chinese Red Army who brought his daughter for a harelip correction), and some chapters are a little disordered.

En su primer libro ("Líbranos del mal"), Tom Dooley narra su trabajo con los refugiados que huyeron de Vietnam del Norte tras la partición del país, muchos de ellos huyendo de la persecución religiosa. En este su segundo libro, combate las enfermedades humanas causadas por la ignorancia, la desnutrición y la falta de atención médica en Laos.
En cierto sentido, es menos angustioso que el otro, pues tendemos a sentirnos peor cuando las desgracias las causan seres humanos. Pero debemos tener en cuenta que también somos en cierto sentido responsables de la ignorancia, la desnutrición y la falta de atención médica.
Está claro que Dooley no tiene tiempo para corregir sus libros. Es obvio que su tiempo se dedica sobre todo a ayudar a los enfermos. Me refiero a que este libro muestra repeticiones (como cuando cuenta dos veces que un oficial del Ejército Rojo chino trajo a su hija para corregirle el labio leporino), y algunos capítulos están un poco desordenados.

In zijn eerste boek vertelt Dooley zijn werk met de vluchtelingen die na de opdeling van het land uit Noord-Vietnam vluchten, de meesten van hen vluchtend voor religieuze vervolging. In dit zijn tweede boek bestrijdt hij menselijke ziekten als gevolg van onwetendheid, ondervoeding en gebrek aan medische zorg in Laos.
In zekere zin is het minder verontrustend dan het andere, want we voelen ons meestal het slechtst wanneer tegenslagen door mensen worden veroorzaakt. Maar we moeten er rekening mee houden dat we in zekere zin ook verantwoordelijk zijn voor onwetendheid, ondervoeding en gebrek aan medische zorg.
