David Wallace Booth is a professor of education who specializes in the teaching of literacy and the use of innovative ways to promote literacy among children.
He is the author of many books for teachers and parents, texts for classroom use, and award winning children's picture books.
Every principal should have two copies of this book; one for themselves and one to loan out to colleagues who haven't read my review. Not only does it explain literacy terms, concepts, and offer program exemplars, it provides a literacy specific observation feedback example, look-out-for-this lists to use during observations (literally copy the book page(s) and walk the building, ok?), and stories from other principals who are leading literacy. Snapshots are inserted throughout to give readers a glance at what has been done at other schools to support literacy. In this tight text, reading, writing, assessment, and instructional infrastructure are brought together as a coherent whole, forming a framework that school leaders can take action with. Did I mention that the book is less than 130 pages?
