Book One in the "Dream" series. First Daughter Nerienne, heir to the Tiria of Gayome, faces the destruction of her world when her mother is killed. Nerienne is left with just her magic and Bidge, a strange, shelled creature. Nerienne is rescued by Durgan Ketassian, leader of the northern woods' rebels, but can she trust this man whom her mother condemned to die? Durgan knows he cannot trust Nerienne, for the Tiria has been his enemy since she began slaying dreamsingers, those skilled musicians who sing the future through one's dreams. To save Gayome, Nerienne and Durgan must work together to defeat their common enemy, but to become allies opens them to the greatest threat of all...falling in love.
Unfortunately, I was not impressed by Dream Singers. The plot was so intriguing that I wanted to love it, but there is just too much man-handling going on here. I barely got through it with the mushy gushy feelings. The part that really did it for me was the crappy world building. The Tiria was so hyped up and then boom, that's the end of that system. The world itself was also confusing and unexplained. I would have DNFed it around 50%, but I held hope that it would surprise me in the end. Nope.
It isn't to say that no one would enjoy this story. If you're okay with not a lot of world building, rapey scenes, disrespect for women, you could like it. To give Dream Singer its due: the idea of a dream singer was interesting and it does have a certain plot twist I didn't see coming in regards to a certain dreams singer.
"5 out of 5 stars!! One woman struggles to uphold her responsibilities in the face of her world crumbling around her while one man seeks vengeance for all he has lost. Together they become unlikely allies against those who plan to give them equal harm. Yet, can they do so without losing themselves and their hearts to one another in the process?
This epic journey begins with this enticing novel! Intense and spell binding, I was riveted from the very beginning when Durgan is plotting his “escape.” In ways..."
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. It has taken me a very long time to finally finish this book. I started this over a year ago and finally forced myself to read it. A book should just not be something you dread reading but this was for me. The world the author created was interesting but it was hard to enjoy. I never really understood how the dream songs were supposed to work. Other than that it was okay slow but with good action at times.
