They say you should quit while you’re ahead. I just quit because I’m in love … with my boss. My name is Jill, and I’m a professional restaurant server. I’m also the secret admirer of the head manager at The Clumsy Goat. In my defense, Owen O’Dell wasn’t in charge when I got hired. He just happened to be the sweetest, handsomest, funniest, most est son of the owner. But after the job took its toll on his dad’s heart—both literally and figuratively—Owen stepped up to the plate and took over. Now he won’t risk putting a wife and kids through the stress his mom and brothers felt. That’s right. Owen just committed to bachelorhood now that I’m ready to confess my love. I can’t stick around Apple Valley pining for a man who’s permanently off-limits, but Owen can’t let his dad think he’s failing because The Goat’s best server up and quit. (That’s me. I’m the best server.) Solution? We pretend to be a couple so the no-dating policy is the reason I’m leaving. Being Owen’s fake girlfriend probably won’t kill me. Just don’t tell that to my heart.
Julie Christianson writes sweet romantic comedies—but only when she’s not reading them. Born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, she loves her hilarious family, her three crazy rescue dogs, and laughing at her own jokes.
Julie dreamed of being an author the first time she held a crayon, and after the library where she worked closed in 2020, she decided to try her hand at penning her own small-town romcoms.
She’s a former high school English teacher and lapsed marathon runner, the mother of two great kids, and the wife of one very funny man. Her goal is to write books that make you laugh out loud, fall in love, and live happily ever after.

Confession. Novellas are not my friends. It never fails. Just as I'm really getting into the book, BAM! It just ends. And that makes for one sad KJ!
Jill and Owen. *dreamy sigh* I enjoyed getting to know these two and watching them get their HEA. They did have some awkward moments and I found myself feeling second hand embarassment for them. But their story is definitely a cute one. They may or may not have had me laughing out loud a time or two and letting out little dreamy sighs. This is a fun afternoon escape.
I really enjoy Ms. Christianson's books and I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!
I read this series so out of order, starting with the last, going back to #1, 2, 3 and finally ending with this novella. I can truly say this is my favorite romcom series I have ever read, and not only is it because of the adorably sweet romances, but just the lovable Apple Valley characters that we see throughout the books. Will definitely be tuning into Julie’s next series!
This was a very sweet story and I loved it and the characters! This one and My Own Best Enemy are my favorites from Julie. I think I like her books better when the characters already know each other when the story begins.
This author’s writing just keeps getting better and better and you better believe I am here for every book!!
This novella was darling! I love the fake dating trope and it’s so fun watching how everything played out!! I can’t wait to read Lucy’s story next and another new release in August! Buckle up because these friends have stories to tell!!
If you haven’t been reading these Sweet and Swoony Romance novellas you need to change that pronto!!
Synopsis: Jill finally had the courage to tell Owen her feelings towards him. But in a turn of events, they end up fake dating to his Father.
Includes: ✨Fake Dating ✨Boss/Employee ✨Friends to More ✨Mutual Pining ✨Quick Novella
🌶️Heat Level: Just (Sweet) Kisses Attraction/Tension:🔥🔥
My Opinion: This story is a good complementary for the full-length series. The good old Friends that are afraid to tell their real feelings., but I like Jill and Owen’s narrative on self Discovery and growth. If you’re reading the series, you should read this one.
I loved coming back to Apple Valley and visiting past characters in this series. I didn't feel like this novella was quite as good as the full length novels, and I didn't love the characters. I felt like they both needed a healthy dose of courage sooner. But it was a sweet story, and a good stepping stone to the next novel.
Cute, cute, cute!!! Loved Owen and Jill! They were adorable and so swoony together. Jill has had a crush on Owen forever and he may have a little crush on her too; but he is her boss and too busy running his restaurant, plus there is that no dating policy at work. This is a novella so it’s a quick read, but it’s jammed packed with fun moments that had me smiling and giving me all the happy sighs. Loved the kiss on the baseball field, Friends reference and so much more!
I loved reading Jill Came Tumbling! The humor and characters were so much fun, and I had a huge smile on my face the whole time I was reading. The baseball game scene was one of my favorite parts, and I enjoyed the Star Wars references in the story! This was a great addition to one of my favorite romcom series, and I’m so glad I read it!
– this story occurs during the events of Pretending I Love Lucy (but we do not see either of the main characters nor the events – except for the ball itself- from that story)
– this is told from Jill and Owen’s points of view
Review:
I really enjoyed reading this story! Jill’s friendship with Tess was awesome (and it helped give us a closer view of the potential for Tess and Spencer a bit)! I loved that Jill needed to be pushed by Tess to do some things, otherwise Jill would just keep on dreaming/worrying about what would happen. But once Jill was in her comfort zone, she was more open and silly as an introvert is with those close to them. Which led to some of the funny moments of the story! I also loved how Owen would get thrown for a loop almost as easily as Jill. He would be shocked by something and barely be able to say what he was thinking because of it.
When Jill tells Owen that she is quitting her job at The Clumsy Goat, he worries that his father will want to come out of the retirement he so badly needs because Owen couldn’t handle keeping someone who is considered their best server. But Jill wants to spread her wings and get out of Apple Valley, so he can’t beg her to stay. So he’ll just need to convince her to do the only thing that might make everything ok in the end. Owen will need to convince her to pretend to date him, so her leaving The Clumsy Goat looks to be a happy change since he’s not able to date coworkers.
Jill didn’t set out to quit her job, but when she thinks someone else is dating Owen that’s what she does. And then she is somehow convinced to pretend to date Owen for a bit. Jill can certainly pretend to love Owen (she’s done that for real from afar for the past eight years), but what about when they end it? She didn’t want to move out of Apple Valley, but now she’ll have to to keep up the ruse. Hopefully it won’t break her heart when they break things off…
Will Owen and Jill see that they were made for each other? Or will they go on their way like nothing happened, despite all their pretending?
I finished reading this book after 3 hours. The story was so sweet that I can't put my Kindle down. It's a short, fast paced fake dating book.
I need to share Owen's description so you can understand why I added this guy on my book boyfriend list:
Owen O'Dell. Twenty-six years old. Reddish-brown hair. Hazel eyes. Six foot two. One hundred ninety-five pounds of pure muscle. (I might've checked his driver's license the one time he left his wallet on a table in the break room.)
Not to mention he's a great guy. Owen the son. Owen the brother. Owen the manager. Owen the boyfriend *lovely*
What I really love about the book is that it's a light read that will make your heart hump happily. I love Jill's and Owen's family, they're very supportive! Even Jill and Tess' friendship is something to die for. Jill is literally living my dream.
Julie did not fail to make me love the characters. She even mentioned Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.
News flash: Jill got over Harry Styles because she fell in love with her boss, Owen. (Should I say, snookums?)
I want to share some good advices Jill's mother told her:
"You're not just a woman, Jill. You are human. And life is messy and hard, and you're allowed to make mistakes. If you're alive long enough, you'll make many. I, for one, hope you make a whole lot of them."
"Everyone deserves a do-over, Jill. Be kinder and gentler to yourself."
I love this book so much! It's like breathing fresh air over this weekend. Thank you, Julie! For sharing this book on your Instagram. I love her writing style!
Tags of this book: fake dating and in love with the boss.
Sexual: High Mild. There is some kissing, lots of descriptions of physical attraction. ex: female protag likes his 'back view'. It's swoony descriptions without getting steamy.
Jill made me laugh. She's quirky, normal, and fun. I loved her craziness. The goat mascot thing just tickled my funny bone. Owen was a little harder to like, kinda Mary-sue a bit? But his character is very loyal and loving to his family and the man is dedicated to a fault. The two of them worked. It didn't take any force on the author's part to get the two of them on the same page. Though Owen did need a clue-by-four a few times.
The sheer rom-com-ness of this had me vividly picturing the whole book as a movie. It could easily step onto the screen and be a favorite warm fuzzy watch for me if so. I just busted up at Jill working up her nerve to finally confess that she's in love with her boss after 8 years of pining quietly, only to panic and quit. Her whole life then proceeds to completely unravel in the funniest of ways that had me slapping a hand over my mouth in sympathy even while I was snickering.
The goat costume was the best side character. (Sorry Tess!)
Is it realistic? No, not really. But was it a barrel of fun? Yes, definitely.
Totally willing and excited to read the other books in the series. That was just the fluffy funny I needed to read.
Jill has been in love with her boss Owen for years and on the day she decides to finally tell him how she feels, her plan goes horribly wrong... and somehow she ends up in a fake relationship with him instead. Which seems like it is a good thing except Jill has also declared that she is leaving Apple Valley.
Owen can't afford to lose his best employee but at least by pretending to date, his dad won't think that Jill quit because of him. Only it isn't long before he realizes if she leaves, he won't just lose his best employee, but he will lose the girl who has stolen his heart.
What to Love: Workplace romance Duel POV Unrequited crush Fake Dating Small-town The baseball game! That first kiss Owen waking up Cameos of Apple Valley characters the goat costume The epilogue
Whether you are a fan of the Apple Valley series or haven't read a single one yet, you absolutely must read this book! It happens around the same time as The Even Odder Couple but there are no spoilers and you can read this as a standalone.
It may just be a novella but it still had everything that I love about Julie's books - great characters, swoony romance, and lots of laughs and fun!
Sweet story in the Real Mc Coy's world of Apple Valley. This is about a long time love that a certain server (Jill) has for the boss (Owen) of the Clumsy Goat restaurant. Spurned on by best friend Tess, Jill goes to Owen's office to confess her feelings, However, before she can really get started, a blond bombshell co-worker pushes into the office and starts talking to Owen as if Jill wasn't even there. Instead of telling him her true feelings, Jill quits her job and tells him she is moving out of Apple Valley. And before you realize what's going on, they are agreeing to be fake girlfriend/boyfriend for his father's benefit. Jill is hilarious, as she often makes unintentionally funny comments. Such wonderful characters! Families who like each other, friends and acquaintances who are sincerely nice, and of course Jill and Owen are so refreshingly sweet. This is a fun series, and this book is a good addition to the rest of the other Apple Valley stories. I really like all the books, but this one is just a little sweeter in my opinion.
It's always a good day when I get to read a book by Julie Christianson. Her books are just so much fun! I love the way she writes her characters. I was so happy for a trip back to Apple Valley in this one!
I loved Jill in this book! She made me laugh so many times. Jill has been in love with her boss, Owen, for a really long time. When she decides to do something about it, disaster strikes, somehow. And she ends up quitting her job. And that's when things get fun!
Owen was so clueless. He never wanted to have a family and put it second to the restaurant he runs. So he never planned to have a family, or even a girlfriend. But as soon as Jill quit, that's when his mind started changing about that. I loved the way he talks Jill into being his fake girlfriend. And all of the hilarity that occurred from that one small decision.
I loved that this book is such a quick read. I loved every bit of it. You need to read it!
What does an eagle, a rabbit, a goat, and a gorilla have in common? They were my favorite puns all throughout this story. And if you wanna know what I'm talking about, just go ahead and pick it up (it's currently *Free*). But seriously, "Jill Came Tumbling" is the novella I didn't know I needed, but it was everything I've come to love about a Julie Christianson story: all the laughs and (in this case, animal) puns, really sweet, swoony and electrical romance, and a great message about going after your dreams (even if they're not as "grand" as others may think). Truly, I loved everything about Jill and Owen's story, his starting to see Jill in a different light, and her lovable, passionate, yet down-to-earth ways (I wish I could be her friend!). Now I'm seriously looking forward to Tess' book. Can't wait for "The Even Other Couple"! ~ 5 stars
After secretly pining for her coworker for years, Jill finally works up the courage to tell Owen how she feels. Let’s just say it did not go as planned! Owen, on the other hand, has been focused on running his family's restaurant and feels like he's too busy to take on a relationship.
Julie Christianson made their love story unfold in a way that's both sweet and swoon-worthy. The chemistry between Jill and Owen is undeniable, and their interactions are filled with humor and warmth. And let's not forget the adorable reactions of their parents - it's the perfect icing on the cake.
Christianson's writing is as engaging as ever, and I'm already excited for her next book release. If you're looking for a heartwarming romance that'll leave you feeling all the feels, look no further!
This was such a cute novella! This is the first book by this author I’ve read and I hope to read more. The small town was charming just like Jill in the story. She’s a bit clumsy just like the name of her employment, The Clumsy Goat. 🐐 She’s worked there for 8 years, with some serious unrequited love to her boss Owen. He asks her to fake date and Jill loves and hates it. Knowing she couldn’t pretend, so she decides she needs to move. 🐐 This felt like a full complete story and I was cheering on both main characters. Obviously I wanted more and for the story to be longer but I felt the emotional pull for Jill and Owen. 🐐 I got this ebook free from Profilic Works and you can too for 1 year! Just sign up with them and find it under sweet and swoony romance.
Cute, Hallmark-esque novella. This could seriously become a Hallmark movie. I kind of enjoy fake relationship stories even if I don't condone lying. One might say that their relationship moves quickly and it does since this is novella length and there isn't time for much else but I was okay with the pace since she had quietly pined for him for years and he had loved her too but didn't realize it until he was faced with losing her. With those feelings already in place, their relationship just needs a catalyst to jump into the relationship. The story is cute, clean and a quick read making it perfect for when you just have a couple hours to read and want a feel-good kind of story.
I have had this novella on my TBR for so long. I almost started The Even Odder Couple the other day and then remembered I had not read this one.
This one was absolutely adorable! A lot of times with novellas things happen so quickly and it feels very Insta-love. But this one did not feel that way to me at all and I think it’s because Jill and Owen had known each other for 8 years. There was already a friendship established and it made for a great blossoming love.
I thought Jill and Owen were both super great characters. I loved the set up for the fake relationship and how Owen was just completely overtaken by his feelings for Jill.
I highly recommend this novella as well as this whole series! It’s a fun one.
Jill has been in love with Owen O’Dell for eight years, ever since she started working at the Clumsy Goat. He was the bosses son then. Now, he is her boss. Realizing she can’t stay in Apple Valley and keep being invisible to him and having her heart crushed, she tells him she’s moving. And he’s floored. He doesn’t know what to do if Jill Leaves. He’s afraid his dad will see him as a failure at the business, so he makes her a deal. They pretend to be a couple so the business’s no-dating policy will be the reason she leaves. This was a super fun book. I loved it.
Is this my favorite of the @sweetandswoonyromance collection? It's hard to say but it's gotta be close. I love me some fake relationships. I honestly doubt I've read one I didn't like. (Oh. Actually. I take that back. I once read a best friend fake relationship and it was majorly bad. I can't remember the title or the cover or the author. But whatever that one was, from like 5 years ago, don't read it) Anyways. I love Apple Valley and I am actively excited for any love story we get from that lovely town.
Such a sweet and fun story! The chemistry between Jill and Owen is obvious. I love that jill stayed waiting tables for years so she could be with Owen. One day when Jill thinks Owen is dating another coworker Jill quits on a whim. Owen doesn’t want his dad to freak out about losing his best server so they decide to fake date. It starts off innocent until….
Such a fun and quick read. I wanted more! Everything Julie writes is gold and this is too. I love that other characters are involved like Tess and Spencer.
Loved getting Jill and Owens story!! It was so fun to read this after The Even Odder Couple. I knew how it ended but seeing how Jill and Owen found their happily ever after was so fun!
Jill is just magical and so fun! I love her in the goat costume and the ridiculous nicknames and her relationship with Tess.
Owen is trying to do right by everyone. I loved his loyalty to his family. But also how he realizes how much Jill means to him.
Love love love the proposal!!! So special and love the details. These two are just fantastic 🥰
