Martin Evening has been written a book about every upgrade of Photoshop since it was released. The first part of this book describes the function of each tool with many examples illustrated. Part 2 is a detail manual that I dip into as the need arises.

the book was just okay. I was looking for a book to help me with creative edits, instead I got a book that taught me about the new tools in CS6.
