The War of Powers #4

The Fallen Ones

Rate this book
An unstoppable swordsman rough a exterior but a heart of gold, The fearless, intelligent and beautiful princess. The evil and cunning bad guys, and a disembodied 2000 year old philosopher in a clay jug. Epic battles, some fought in the air on the backs of giant war eagles, the panoramic landscapes of the Sundered Realm, Prince Rann's graphic tortures. All the great ingredients of this fine sci-fi.

There was a lot more grisly gore in this one, which was fun. Strangely less sex though and it felt kind of out of flow in parts.

As always, love the worldbuilding and the focus on lots of odd little details here and there to make it come to life. The battles were cool and well-described. The beat of the story never fails.

Princess Moriana's army had been crushed simply because she was distracted. Now she has fled across the countryside, avoiding the airborne warriors of her sister's city. Her only hope is to find a new army and new allies. Unfortunately, those two may not be able to coexist. But, the final battle for the City in the Sky is looming and needs must.

Book 4 of THE WAR OF POWERS by Robert Vardeman and the late Victor Milan continues the exciting story of heritage, power, and the ultimate betrayal. The authors have a good grasp of their characters … both good and evil … emotions and driving needs. Another good volume in this series.

WARNING: This series does contain some adult themes, and, in this case, a surprising one.

This was a book I found myself trudging through in a years long quest to finish the series. It is very much of a tweener book, bridging the gap between what occurred in book 3 and what is yet to come in then final two books when I presume the war of powers actually starts.

Primarily the book attempts to reunite Fost and Moriana. Fost returns to the floating city believing that's where Moriana was headed. There he becomes an instructor to an underground movement planning to dethrone Synalon who usurped the throne from Moriana. Meanwhile, Moriana has sought out mankinds ancient enemy (variously known as hissers, Zr'gsz, or lizard men). Woven in through this tale is the attack by Rann and Synalon on another groundling city in their attempt to create a new empire.
