When Maurice takes the last chocolate chip cookie at the table and his mother tells him to offer it to everyone else first, he travels around the world and into space to fulfill that requirement
Sorry, moralizers, manners aren't the point here. You have failed to see the joke in this book, which is that Our Hero takes his mom a bit too literally in his politeness. And while near the end, Someone Else doing the same pulls Our Hero out of a tricky spot, his virtue is NOT rewarded in the end. While you may feel that he has the wonderful, righteous feeling of having followed his mom's instructions, he ends up cookie-less. Sob!
So read this as what it is, basically a tall tale, complete with aliens and a great punch line. Read something didactic like "The Berenstain Bears" if you insist on a moral in every story, never mind whether or not it's a GOOD story.
Better still, get a copy of Amy Krouse Rosenthal's wonderful Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons, which does teach "manners" without moralizing. (Ugh. Why do people think kids learn manners from books instead of their parents/caregivers' examples. Is it because the adults themselves have such bad manners?)
Oh, and while we're on cookies and manners, look for Pat Hutchins' immortal The Doorbell Rang, which has cookies, sharing, AND a math lesson.
The cookie recipe at the end is a bit weird. This is a British import, and whoever re-wrote the recipe for Americans doesn't seem to know that most American ovens can't be set at 360 degrees, among other weird things. I'd go for the Toll House recipe for a basic cookie dough instead.
A fun book to read with younger readers who might be able to even read it along with you due to the repetition in the text. This is also spot on what my 7 year old son would do too. We also like that we could discuss why it’s polite to offer the last one to everyone at the table and how to do it. Our family enjoys books that start a discussion into something we are working on at home or in school.
I was really excited to read this book from the title and cover because I love cute stories about yummy sweet foods...but I guess I found it a bit disappointing in that it was more about a silly take on manners and aliens then actually about cookies lol. With that said, it was still cute and chuckle-worthy. I'm sure kids would like it.
I didn't really care for this one. A boy wants the last chocolate chip cookie, but his mother insists he must offer it to everyone else. first. He stuffs the cookie in his pocket and offers it first to family and then to his teacher and others outside his home and eventually winds up in outer space where an alien has to offer him as food to everyone else first.
Don't even bother with this one. Unless you want to confuse the people you are reading to by making alien noises. Why does every seemingly good book turn out to have aliens in it?!? (Example: Mr. Wuffles....and THIS BOOK! Waste of time.
Read this one to my kids 8,9,&12 for our chocolate unit. We did end up trying out the recipe in the back it was great! We have to add a bit of applesauce because it wasn't forming. But it just added to the deliciousness.
Ok, I know I 5 star a lot of books (especially picture books) but THIS ONE made me laugh so hard. Multiple times. Teaches a good lesson and is genuinely funny.
A boy takes the last chocolate chip cookie--but before he can take the first bite, his mother stops him. She tells him that he must ask everyone else if they want it first. Then he can have it. Taking her quite literally, he puts the cookie in his pocket and goes around the house, the town, and then the universe asking if anyone else wants the last chocolate chip cookie. Chaos ensues! Will he get to eat that last cookie??
This is a cute book about a boy who wants the last cookie but his mom tells him he has to have good manners and offer it to everyone else first. He ends up offering it to everyone including an alien who wants to eat him but the aliens mother told him to mind his manners and offer the human to everyone else first. So off they go. The last person the alien sees is the boys mother. Cute!
This was a really cute kids story about a little boy who is told to offer the last chocolate chip cookie to everyone else before he can have it, and it even comes with a chocolate chip cookie recipe in the back!
Cute reminder of the importance of manners and a parent's love for her son. Clever little twist and colorful pictures are likely to bring a smile to little ones.
It's always nice to use your manners even if you don't really understand what your mom is asking you to do. But would you really want THAT last chocolate cookies?
