Silver Bell Legends

They Say He Flies at Night

Rate this book
Everyone in Silver Bell, Arkansas has heard of Walter Lorry. Rumors have been circulating about the strange old man around town for years. He’s weird. Stooped and odd looking. Always keeps to himself and never speaks to anyone. At one time, he had a wife and kid, but no one has seen them in forever. Then there’s the matter of him sleeping on his front porch every night when there’s a perfectly good bed inside his house. Who in their right mind would do that?

But even the people of Silver Bell have to admit that Walter Lorry has beautiful penmanship—calligraphy so swirly and intricate you’ve never seen anything like it. They say dignitaries requested his work at some point in history. They say his work even hangs in museums around the world. They say he has money buried somewhere, maybe even next to his murdered family. They say a lot of things about Mr. Walter Lorry, it’s just that no one knows which things are true.

And which things are lies.

Leave it to Piper Moore—a newcomer who’s engaged to the son of town’s most prominent business owner—to find out. She’s heard the rumors, she’s seen his handwriting, and she wants Mr. Lorry to design one-of-a-kind wedding invitations just for her. After all, she’s used to getting her way, and she reasons that if his work was once good enough for Hollywood, then it’s good enough for her. Which is exactly what drives her to knock on his door, march inside the old man’s antique store, and convince him to do it.

She doesn’t expect his answer.
She isn’t prepared for his story to change everything she believes about love.
And she certainly wasn’t ready to learn all the reasons you should never, ever believe in small-town legends.

Silver Bell, Arkansas is a small town full of legends and superstitions. Walter Lorry is an odd, quiet man who runs an antique shop, with many rumors and theories circulating around about him. Local children swear he’s Santa Claus, living here during the “off-season” and believe he has wings to fly. Of course, no one really gets to know him–until Piper comes along, wanting to ask him to make her wedding announcements.

I absolutely love Piper! Although she is slightly fearful, she didn’t let the grump scare her away, as she is determined to work for him for free. An unlikely relationship develops–one that took my breath away and warmed the deepest crevices of my soul. Her ability to stand up for injustice made me want to shout and vigorously applaud.

Walter, just like everyone, has a story and I absolutely enjoyed watching it unfold through a series of journals that Piper discovers and sneak reads. He comes to life and the reader experiences a gamut of emotions throughout his tale. My heart was cracked just a little bit and it makes me want to view those around me in a more open way.

Amy Matayo has a knack of drawing a reader right into her books and writing in a lyrical way that speaks straight to my heart. I’m captivated by these legends and this small town and can’t wait for more!

Content/TW: off page assault, death, foster care/adoption; mild language; mild romance

A lovely book. 💗
Amy Matayo will soon be visiting my local library so I thought I’d better read one of her books. When I first began I thought “too sweet”, “curmudgeon”, and but for her visit I’d have set it aside.
How glad I am that I didn’t. While not getting darker, it does get deeper - and is certainly enjoyable. I’m glad I stuck around to know these characters!
I’m glad I read it, and yes, I’ll now be reading more of her books.

An easy enjoyable read. Loved Walter's profession as a calligrapher and how beautiful his work was. This is a story on how life can change so fast. It explored the oddities and imperfections in people. Started off a little slow and sometimes predictable but still very enjoyable.

4.5 stars! A heartbreaking and beautiful story. One of my favorite books of the summer!

I love reading challenges, because it gives me a chance to read books I might not have read otherwise. When I was looking for a book "set in Arkansas" for the Summer Reading Challenge, this one was recommended...and I loved it!

They Say He Flies at Night was a slower-paced book for me, but it was so good. And had so many lessons fit into its 276 pages. There was even a twist in there that I didn't even see coming until I was right up on it.

I really enjoyed how this was not only multiple POV, but it also was written in different timelines. It really brought the whole story together by the end, but left you craving more as you read it.

If you're looking for a book that will pull at your heart strings, with a dash of romance on the side, then They Say He Flies at Night needs to be your next read.

nope

If I’m gonna read a book it has to grab me from the very beginning. All that grabbed me from the very beginning was this weak sniffling little woman, and how she allows herself to be abused by her so-called fiancé and his despicable parents. After I got through about a third of the book, I couldn’t stand it anymore. So I did some speed reading and finished out. I hate weak women characters even when they eventually find a pair and do the right thing.

I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but this ended up being a beautiful story about love, loss, and second chances. The beginning was slow to pull me in, but as the characters developed and the story unfolded, I found myself not being able to put it down! I really enjoyed this book.

Wonderful story

So we'll written that putting it down was difficult. It was refreshing not to be bombarded with profanity and sex. Just a story beautifully told.

5 A Beautifully Written Book Stars!

This is my first book by Amy Matayo and I fell in love with this story. I experienced so many emotions while reading this book. This book tells the story of Walter Lorry and his oddness. He lives in Silver Bell, Arkansas and keeps to himself for the most part. He runs an antique shop and sleeps on his front porch which just has all the locals making assumptions about this man.

Then Piper enters the picture as she’s been sent to this man to hopefully get him to perform the calligraphy he is supposedly famous for. As you can imagine, he’s not really keen on this idea. But that doesn’t stop Piper. I love her so much!! She’s determined to get him to agree and so begins a journey of finding out who Walter Lorry is and why he thinks he can fly!

I love how we find out his story through journals and what’s revealed about him and his past. His story is a perfect example of how perception is not always reality. My heart hurt at times while reading this book. But there were also moments that I had a smile on my face. Ms. Matayo is a wonderful storyteller. There’s a lushness to the building of the crescendo at the end. We learn how Walter’s story flows into so many people’s lives throughout his life and there were some surprises.

Needless to say, I was captivated by this book. I felt a closeness to Piper and her determination to getting to the bottom of the myths of Walter Lorry. As I turned the last page, I knew in my heart that I would definitely be reading this book again as I’m sure I’ll pick up on small details I may have missed the first time around. Ms. Matayo has a new fan and I’m so looking forward to reading her previous books.

I'm loving these small town 'legends' stories based initiated by stories from Matayo's past.

Walter Lorry is an old man living out a traumatic shallow existence in his old antique shop. He sleeps on the porch every night and the town ridicules him for his strangeness and hermit-style life. All sorts of rumours float about him, one of which is that he's Santa Claus in disguise who lives the quiet Arkansas life for 11 months of the year.

PIper Moore, a feisty, courageous lady is a classic Matayo creation. She's engaged to be married to Bryant, the son of the town's wealthiest family, the Ratliffs. She doesn't fit in with this new life, but she's fulfilling a wish of her deceased mother to marry Bryant. The wedding plan involves engaging Mr Lorry to create hand written invitations. Once upon a time, Mr Lorry was a world renowned calligraphy artist, making creations for some of the world's famous including Presidents, pop stars and the like.

Piper visits Mr Lorry to request his services. Little does she know her life is about to turn upside down as is Walter Lorry's.

It's an enthralling story, a page turner, that would look good on an 8-part Netflix series. Matayo has this way of drawing the reader into her stories with characters that are true to life and experience the full gamut of emotions. Piper is a beautiful character, flawed, vulnerable and determined. Her story of letting go is beautiful to read. Walter Lorry is brilliantly crafted. He is grumpy, says very few words, but Matayo shares the man's heart through his mannerisms, his written journals, and his intuition. His story of self-forgiveness and healing is a wonder to read.

I do hope there is a another Silver Bell Legends story to come as the first two are both brilliant.

Oh, friends. This is a good one. I had a hard time putting this book down when life called. I just wanted to be left alone with my book all day without interruptions.

The story is, at first, centered around Piper. Then Piper and Walter as she begins working in his store and reading his journals which take her back in time. It's where, as a reader, the whole story begins to unfold. Walter's story tugged at my heartstrings in such an insistent and emotional way. I adored him. His loyalty, his devotion, his love. Ugh, just wait until you read it. It's all so tragic yet sweet. But don't worry. It all ends well so there is a happy ending to look forward to.

Author Amy Matayo has a way of creating stories of the underdog. Those who reside on the outside of social norms and acceptance. In Walter's case, because his community put him there. It makes me reevaluate my thinking and where I stand. I never want to be the person that participates in something like this.

This isn't a romantic love story but it's a story about love. Women's Fiction. It was so good. So, so good. Don't miss it.

This book is on KU if you have that.

Content: a few instances of mild swearing. Death, adoption. Kissing.

Magic writing that will stir your soul

Small town contemporary novel, secrets
Piper is engaged and three people are in the engagement. As she tries to see one part of the wedding not turn into a monstrosity, she agrees to approach an add recluse to write the wedding invitations in calligraphy.
Nothing is as simple as it seems. Originally pushed off by Walter Lorry, she digs into his past, returns to his shop, and bargains with him to do the invitations.
Journals tucked away that she first sneaks to read, then is allowed to read some of them, provide a history that is joyful, and horribly torn.
Past, present and future woven together in a tangled, awful way, but Walter’s dedication and love keeping his pain, but also his torn hope alive in the present.
Piper’s determination, digging, and realizations about her own pain and life, all combine with Walter’s to make a beautiful beginning.
Heartfelt, hurting, honest and real with characters, plot and setting that leave you wanting even more, made for an incredible novel that will be swirling in your thoughts for days. I know I will be rereading this again to savor the moments. Highly recommend.

4.5⭐️

It is hard to truly classify what genre this book is exactly. It has romance, suspense, intrigue and it was good.

The author takes us on an emotional and roller coaster journey of how one man plays chess with human lives and pulls the strings on consequences like a master puppeteer.

Told from a dual timeline, They Say He Flies At Night is the story of Piper who befriends a town recluse and setting off a chain of events that unearths decades of secrets and upends lives.

I love how easy it was to weave between the past and the present. I love the small town setting and all of the characters, who delivered what was expected of them.

Various emotions run through the books-feelings of joy, sadness, grief, excitement, fear and forgiveness. You cannot help but feel along with Walter with all he had to go through.

I would have loved to know if Ben told his wife and son all the things he did.

If you enjoy emotional reads with a bit of romance and suspense, then you will enjoy this.

I received an advanced copy of this book and the review is entirely mine.

This book made me cry. And also hope. For people to look beyond the surface and see the man or woman hiding underneath. Walter Lorry is an elderly man who owns an antique shop in Silver Bell. He sleeps outside his shop every night on an old cot. Children think he’s Santa Claus. Adults aren’t so kind. Piper goes to see him as her future mother in law wants the wedding invitations to be written by him. He used to be famous for his calligraphy.
She’s unprepared for his grumpiness and unwillingness to help her. Undeterred, she offers him a solution. She’ll work in his shop for free, tidying and cleaning, for two weeks if he does the calligraphy for her.
Surprisingly he agrees. Who is Walter Lorry? What made him become the reclusive, taciturn man he is today. Piper begins to glimpse the man behind the pain when she finds, and begins to read, his journals.
A captivating, beautifully told story.

Amy Matayo’s newest book, They Say He Flies at Night was uniquely entertaining. I quickly became connected to Piper as she began to develop a strange working relationship with Walter Lorry, the mysterious antique store owner. Even after hearing the rumors from the local townspeople about Mr. Lorry, Piper bravely agreed to work in his store in exchange for the former artist’s agreement to make her wedding invitations. As the story unfolds, Piper’s life changes course and it is all due to Walter and his sad story told through a series of journals.

Once again, Mrs. Matayo’s storytelling keeps me drawn in and unable to put her book down. I was captivated by Piper and Walter’s story. I loved it!

I received an advanced copy of this book. This review was my honest opinion and voluntarily given.

Okay, this might be my favorite stories Amy Matayo has written. I know, I know, I probably say that every time I read one of her books, but this time I really mean it (at least until the next book comes out). This story is woven with love, heartbreak, tragedy, mystery, and more. I love how we get to know Walter through his journals. I also really enjoyed that Piper had her own moments of self discovery along the way. I could tell early on that Walter’s character was going to be beloved before the end. What a beautiful redemption story!

**I was given a ARC of this book by the author, but the opinions in this review are completely my own.

Amy Matayo takes these raw, real characters with their struggles and tells their stories. I love that about her books! “They Say Je Flies at Night” is no different. We see an older man who is lonely and outcast just trying to get by. We see a young lady who feels trapped in a relationship and her struggles with that break free through an unexpected friendship with the older man. The storyline definitely keeps you turning the pages to see what happened in the past to land all of the characters where they are now.
Another great book by Amy Matayo!!

Rough start. Lots of errors made it difficult to read at first. Names changed on each page. I thought there were continuity errors at first. But about 3/4 of the way through, the story became clear and I really started to enjoy it. I would have liked more romance in the last part but it was pretty well done. I am glad I read this book when I finished my re-read of The Firm 2 weeks before the sequel was released and needed a quick read to fill the gap. I am glad Author Jenny Jones recommended her author friend’s new book.

Another great book from Amy Matayo. Her books have great characters with lots of depth to them. I feel like I could be friends with any of them and this one was no different. I loved the story line and could not wait to hear how the story was going to play out. I thought the beginning was kind of slow and Bryant and his mother drove me nuts, ha! But, like always, this is a great book and I am glad I read it.

Thanks for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I went into this book totally blind and at first I wasn’t really feeling it but the more and more I read, the more and more my emotions started to get engage and then all the emotions came out. It’s true that you can never really judge a person just by appearance alone. It’s so easy to dismiss a person for superficial reasons but the more we look beneath the surface, things start to be come clearer. It just takes a lot of work to get there. I would definitely recommend this book.

Oh my where do I start with how this book had me all in the feels?! Piper had found herself in a predicament and needs the help of the antique shop owner Walter Lorry. There are so many rumors going around the town about the odd man, but we find out his life story through his journals. It really had me going through so many emotions. This book is absolutely amazingly written! I believe this is my first book by Amy Matayo and it definitely will not be my last.- Elizabeth

It Grows on You

The first few chapters of this story left me thinking I would just return the story due to the shallow narcissistic characters. When suddenly Piper was evolving into a more interesting young woman while Walter drew me in like a magnet.

I thoroughly enjoyed the discovery of this man’s life experiences and Piper’s involvement in the unveiling. Well worth the read!

I'm not gonna lie, I read this without first checking the tags and thought it was going to be a spooky book. What I actually got was a beautiful story that made me cry and laugh and I not only resonated with Piper's story, but I fell in love with Walter's narrative as well.

This is one of the best books I've read this year and I'm absolutely recommending it to anyone who wants to read something that yes can be sad at times, but also has a warm tenderhearted ending as well.

4.5 This is my second book by Amy Mateo and I really enjoy her stories. They are beautifully written and easy to read. This was a story of a young women entering the life of the odd old man in town and discovering his secrets. Ultimately it changes the course of her life, his and a few more. Although it is slightly predicable I could not put it down until I read the final page. I will be keeping an eye on this author.

Amy Matayo does it again! I enjoyed this book. The depth of the characters and the life that Walter had lived. Amy also did an amazing job of weaving the characters’ stories together. Throughout the book I was imagining myself through the lens of the characters and could see different people that I know in all of them.

Thank you for the ARC I was provided.
