After reading Ham on Rye, I was excited to check this out one day, and finally found a copy recently.
I wasn’t a massive fan of Ham. It read too much like every other story about growing up in the 20th century depression era. And just bummed me out.
Post office, however, I really loved. It’s a sequel to ham, despite being written first. And a lot shorter than Ham too. The chapters are short, and Its pace flows effortlessly from story to story. And I related even more to Henry this time around.
In that: enduring asinine bureaucracy and over-management-to-prove-a-point, while working insane hours at a Joe-job, for low wages. With various women floating in and out of the narrative; and all the highs and lows that accompany all of that. All while being too lazy to strive for anything better, and giving in to vices that blur the passing years.
At least that’s what I took from it. Someone smarter than me would most likely disagree.
I’d recommend this one for sure. But it’s gruffness definitely isn’t for everyone. 4/5 posts 📫📪📬📭

I complained about this book the whole time because I hate when a man is complaining about himself being miserable when it is wholly fixable.. but I did finish the whole thing. So. It’s the most straightforwardly written book I think I’ve ever read and that was honestly refreshing.
Knowing this was written about Bukowskis alter ego fills me with rage. This was like bojack if he lacked all talent and his life was even worse and he wasn’t a horse. What a fucking freak.

I love the language in this book—the straightforward talk—the life of a man who doesn't like his job but does it anyway.
