On our last trip to Normandy, for #DDay80, and a fuel station I bought this book. A very graphic book and a nice add-on to your coffee table, it is a great book of the battle for Normandy.
For me, it added the French vision of the battle and the liberation of France during WWII. In several languages, however, this revision is for the French version.
It starts with the preparations on both sides for the battle, then goes division by division, beach by beach, and covers the main phases of the development of the Battle of Normandy.
Each chapter has a témoignage, a direct witness account: a journalist embedded with the troops, a military, or a civilian, which adds a very human look during each key moment of the battle.
An impactful chapter addresses the damage and casualties suffered by civilians. It doesn't minimize the effect but captures the doubts, courage, and losses experienced by civilians during the battle. It portrays the hard cost of reclaiming freedom from Nazi occupation while recognizing the sacrifices of both civilians and military personnel who gave their lives.
