UPDATE ---- January 16, 2018

Reread for the first time....AHHHHHHH!!!! SO GOOD!!!!! I love Leith and Ranson and Jamie trying to find what normal life looks like after being Blades. Kayleigh and Martyn's relationship is absolutely AMAZING. This book. Just. *heartpound*

***********

Let me go scrape my heart out of the dirt before I try to write a cohesive review of this beautiful piece of literature. *sobs*

Okay...I'm back. Review. Here:

All I really feel like doing is randomly fangirling over this book, but since that isn’t exactly helpful to anyone, I’ll restrain myself.
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Deliver, as Defy seemed to adequately wrap up the story. I was in for a surprise. Deliver was just as engaging, nail-biting, and addictive as the other books. Martyn’s character development was off-the-charts fantastic...I’ll admit, if I hadn’t been reading an eBook, I would definitely have skipped to Martyn’s parts. And the new characters!!!! AHHH!!!! One in particular was my favorite for SO MANY REASONS, but, because I spoilers…I will be quiet. I cannot wait to add this book to my shelf. And read it again. And again. And again.

So I thought the last book was the final in the series.....but may I just say I am SO glad it wasn't, because while I thought it was a fine conclusion, THIS conclusion is so much better.

Either I was just really grumpy or a little overcritical reading the last book or the writing really improved in this one......either way, I still think this probably her best book since the first one. The writing was more consistent with time, the character development felt accurate, the humor was timed nicely....it just all came together in a very pleasing way!

Also, I was really excited that the new King (spoiler) is a decent and honorable guy. I had this fear that since he had a forgiveness problem he would be cast in a bad light, but he was only human, and happily that's exactly what Tricia wrote him as. Not perfect, but struggling to do the right thing. Plus he has a wife and baby and that is very cute and makes me happy.

Yay for all the characters! *tosses rice* (Why rice? Why don't you read the ending and find out.)

This ended exactly as it should have - in a heart-warming and satisfying way. This is a fantastic series, filled with bravery, self sacrifice, heroic deeds, real love, deep friendships, forgiveness and redemption.

Even though Martyn is the main focus in this book and not Leith and Renna I still loved this. And thankfully Leith and Renna are still very present and significant. Overall it still is their story since Martyn is so important to Leith. Many of the minor characters we love (and hate) also pop up. And I was very glad to have more of Shad.

I also liked how there were honest attempts by the Christian characters to grapple with how killing people accords with their faith.

Also I love how the words Bible, Christian etc are used in this, rather than substituting fantasy-equivalents. This is unashamedly Christian not just in words but in character development and themes. It is powerfully written.

One small quibble, I would have liked to understand better the motivations behind Martyn's parents' actions. But that is only a minor question in an otherwise inspiring book.

I have to add this. I was dabbling in writing medieval Christian fantasy, but after reading the first few books of this series (and others, but these books finished me off) I came to the conclusion that there are excellent writers in this field already and that I was better off writing other stories.

If you haven't begun this series yet, do! So worth reading.

I was given a copy of this in exchange for my honest review.

2nd review:
CAN I JUST SAY WOAH. That's pretty much the only word that really explains the book in a nutshell. I cannot tell you how many times I squealed while reading this. It. Just. Ah. But I mustn't spoil it for you, and it's driving me INSANE because I want you to know how I feel so we can just squeal together. Bother!

Deliver is the fourth and final book in Tricia Mingerink's Blades of Acktar. *cries as realization sinks in that it's over* While the other three books were more focused on Renna, Brandi, and Leith, this book actually features Martyn Hamish, Leith's oldest friend, and we get to see the story from his POV starting from the end of book three... and that was aMazINg. Like seriously guys, Martyn is my precious nugget.

Ever since they had joined the Blades, Martyn and Leith have always been friends that are more like brothers. But after all the events of the first three books, there is a barrier between them. Leith's faith is a bother to Martyn's carefree personality, so following impulse, Martyn runs the opposite direction searching for answers to questions that no one can answer. There was so much war going on inside him, so many insecurities that Tricia definitely described and portrayed impeccably. I loved getting to know Martyn better. His past crushes my heart *cries* and makes me want to just wrap him up in a snuggy and make him my burrito and protect from the rest of the world.

The plot was just as amazing as the rest of the books. Or course, I expected nothing less... but this was extraordinarily fantablous. I loved the message of God's forgiveness and His hope and redemption, and all the emotions are overcoming my brain. They were intertwined and portrayed so wonderfully, I definitely cried more than once while reading. My heart was a galloping horse one moment, then a shattered piece of glass the next. Aaaaaand I really can't say too much or I'll be giving everything away, which is SO HARD BECAUSE DUDE. Duuuuuuuuuuude.

As for the characters, can I just say how much they have my heart? Seriously. How can a cast be SO FLIPPIN' PERFECT?!?! I love them and each one of them is my cinnamon roll and how they slay my life and slay in general and I love them all so much my heart hurts and aches and ASDJFKSLFJ. Yep (more on them in a follow-up post!).

I very seriously adore this book. Like, there are the books I love... and then there are the books like this one.; they haunt my heart for years and years and the pain of how much I love them never lessens. It's a wonderful feeling, it really is. One of my favorite things about this series is that it's not only a good story with heartwarming/breaking characters and events, but it is also spiritually sound with plenty of references to scripture. I love how each of the characters grow in the Lord, and it's not pictured as, "God's on my side now, buh-bye problems!" No, they still struggle. But it's different because in their weakness, they see God be strong for them. It. Is. Beautiful. I definitely experienced a growth in my relationship with Christ as I went through all of these books! Such an amazing series with amazing messages.

My only cautions will be for the violence. I'm totally not sensitive when it comes to blood, war, etc. but there were a few parts that I wouldn't exactly let my 8 year-old brother read. Tricia is pretty detailed when it comes to wounds, and I know some people are particular when it comes to that kind of stuff. My other warning would be that YOU WILL DIE FROM AWESOMENESS (wow that was so cheesy). But that's it! Words really do no justice to how amazing and perfect and AMAZING this book really is... how amazing this entire series is!

In conclusion, just go read the book and become a blubbering blob of happiness and sorrow. It's life changing.

1st time finishing:
NOOOOOOOOOO.
It can't be over!!! IT JUST CANt. I need my people.
Real review to come, but as of now I'm having to learn how to breath and comprehend who these strange people are that keep telling me they're my family. OH WELL.

How to say goodbye to a favorite fantasy series? It wasn't easy, especially considering how Deliver tugged at my heartstrings. *huggles all the characters* In this fourth and final installment to THE BLADES OF ACKTAR by Tricia Mingerink, we journey with our dear fictional friends on one last mission for freedom, peace, and healing.

Martyn Hamish can't seem to understand being free. Forgiven. Struggles to grasp his friends' irrational faith. Has nightmares over the betrayal he's felt and caused.
Leith and Renna learn to trust each other even more, while dealing with new threats on the horizon.
... And Brandi and Jamie are there, as lovable as ever. And of course, Shad. As well as Ranson. And a new, fascinating and fun character ...

*laughs and cries* I can't believe it's over! I don't know how I'm going to deal with this. No more novels from THE BLADES OF ACKTAR series? What will I do without all my beloved peoples? I adored Leith, Renna, Brandi, Jamie, and Shad every bit as much this time around. And fell in love with some others ... such as Martyn, and our new character. . I mean, Martyn is just fabulous! He's another one of those tortured heroes, but in a different way than Leith. He's a little harder. He was practically one of the bad guys in Book Two/part of Book Three. He needs to have his mouth washed out with soap once or twice ... *winks* He's stubborn and his walls are a little higher than Leith's. But, oh, is it worth it when they break down! ^_^ Martyn made me chuckle again and again. His story and guilt and pain squeezed my heart, and I was quickly rooting for him to discover light and life.

AND LEITH! Can one say enough about Leith Torren/Daniel Grayce? He had me bursting into giggles and blinking back tears. And grinning because he's just so cool. *big grin* I love this guy so much. Definitely one of my favorite guy characters EVER.

And Renna and Brandi, still the sweetest sisters there is. So much growth they went through, and still they march on.

I wanted to see more of Jamie! And Brandi, for that matter. Please, could there be another novella? These characters have my heart. I don't want to say goodbye. And I want to see little Leiths and Rennas!

Though there were skirmishes and danger, Deliver was a lighter read than the previous books in the series, which I think is fitting, as it is the conclusion. We still have adventure, daring escapades, and near-death experiences. Also, crying-worthy parts. Many a time, tears stung my eyes, though mostly they were tears of healing. ^_^ Happiness. This book touched my heart, as all Tricia Mingerink's have!

And I laughed! I couldn't contain my giggles more than once! Oh, these characters crack me up. *hugs Leith* *And Martyn* *And Renna* *Okay, hugs them all again* Tricia Mingerink, you are a fabulous writer! You had me laughing, and crying, and gasping, and sighing happily.

And that ending ... <3 Deliver was a beautiful ending to THE BLADES OF ACKTAR series. This non-magical fantasy adventure is not to be missed. Experience faith, trials, friendship, redemption, grief, courage, adventure, romance, and love in this truly memorable fantasy story set on the plains of Acktar.

I received a copy of Deliver from the author.

So, this book. My feelings are so complicated. I loved it... but there is a lot I wasn't as in love with. I don't know. I'll just ramble it out.

First of all: Martyn! And Kayleigh! The two of them are amazing, and I loved their relationship and their inner struggles. I disliked Martyn in the first book -he felt underdeveloped and I had no reason to care about him- but from that point on (through both Deny and Defy) I loved him. A lot. So getting to see his journey was epic.

The setting of this book was epic as well. I've always loved the idea of seeing what's going to happen after the victory's won, and there's peace, and all is well... but things don't actually turn perfect immediately. There's messes, and there's PTSD, and there's broken things that need fixing, and there's veterans of the war who need people to help them. And that was entirely what Deliver was about. The war is over; what happens next?

Then we had Leith and Renna. I felt like the two of them were less their own people this time and their chapters were more focused on their romance--which was okay, because they're happy and I enjoyed it--but I felt like they were a lot less rich in this one. And I found that kind of sad.

For the most part I LOVED this book; it simply wasn't as good as the previous two. However, I still enjoyed it more than I didn't, and it was so good. I finished and was just sad because the story of Acktar is over, and I'd love more novellas, even though normally I don't read novellas. I'd love to journey back to Acktar. Thank you, Tricia Mingerink, for giving us this world to immerse ourselves in. :)

*spoiler warning for those who haven't read books 1-3*

When a book keeps me up late, it usually isn't because I don't like. I am a night owl, but the book has to especially good for me to stay up into the wee morning hours to finish it.

And that was Deliver. Once I got pulled into the story, I just couldn't put it down!!

According to Goodreads, it took me two weeks to read this book. That's not entirely true, as it was more like I started it, set it aside for two weeks only reading once or twice, and then read the remaining 65% in about 24 hours.

Parts of the beginning felt a little slow to me, but I think that was just because it wasn't *quite* as fast-moving as the prior three books. Which makes sense, when you think about it. The war is over now and everyone is trying to rebuild their lives as best they can.

And that brings me to... The characters. When I started this book, I was afraid that it was going to have only Martyn's POV. Which...would've been cool, but I needed more Leith and Renna (ya know, while they're living in HAPPINESS.) Needless to say, I was thrilled to discover that this book had Leith and Renna's POVs as well as Martyn's. :D

Martyn... I've always loved his character. He's tough and hard and yet he makes you feel for him. Like, at the end of Defy. He was hurting my precious one (both physically and emotionally), but I still couldn't help but hurt for him. And GOOD HEAVENS the snarkiness!! Without 'getting inside his head' you would never know about all these sarcastic thoughts he's having. And let's not forget about annoyingly-perfect lord's son over there... :P

Kayleigh... Enters another awesome character. Just when I think there isn't any possible way for Ms. Mingerink to create another unique character in the same series. And yet here she is. Strong, independent, good-hearted, and...outcast. (Am I the only person who totally shipped them from the beginning?!) And the whole thing with the cursing and ordering and SOAP?! *grins* I'm totally going to be walking around saying "blistering soapsuds" now. :P

Leith... I loved seeing how he grew and changed through this book. Figuring out where he belongs in a world of peace, without the Blades, without anything to fight for. Ahh, twas lovely. The fatherly talk with Lord Alistair, the little brother jokes with Ranson and Jamie... <3 <3

Renna... So wonderful to look back on her whole character arc from the weepy, clingy, scared girl in "Dare" to the strong Lady Faythe of Stetterly. With head held high as she stands up to the town for the man she loves, and stands up for the town against those who seek to destroy all they hold dear a second time. (Speaking of which... *Deliver spoiler here* I LOVED the part where Renna spoke to the town concerning Leith, and then he stood up next to her. *swoons* They are so precious. <3 *end of spoiler*)

The other characters... Brandi, Jamie, Ranson, Shad, Lord Alistair (LOVED his words to Leith in the last chapter <3)... They're all there and just as amazing.

The plot was amazing. I loved all the parts with Martyn and Kayleigh, seeing the eventual change in him, and then that surprise character that showed up *cough*, and rebuilding Stetterly... Gahhh, Acktar, would you give me my heart back please?!

The epilogue seriously made me so happy. Not the fluffy, girly, sunshine kind of happy that can change with the weather. But really happiness, where even if things go wrong and their hearts are hurt, they will still be able to live and laugh and love. Through Christ. <3

Deliver was an amazing story of redemption, betrayal, and love. Rebuilding from ashes, starting anew, and finding a new normal in the strange world of peace. An absolutely incredible finale to the series -- a series that I can see myself re-reading again and again in years to come.

Another splendid book in this series.
Characters: the characters are all so colourful, real, scarred, and learning on their faith journey. I loved Martyn’s ARC. Gives him armfuls of hugs. And him and Kayleigh skfjbdbdjks I loved their dynamic. She’s such a relatable character for me. Her characteristics, personality, everything. And Leith and Renna’s story is continued as well. I also loved seeing Keevan come out and forgive Leith and allowing his scars and anger go. Brandi is the same spitfire tough as brass girl. And Shad. I think everyone will always love Shad.

Themes of love, forgiveness (both God’s forgiveness and the even harder reality of living knowing that His forgiveness is whole and you need to forgive yourself too), redemption from hard pasta, and doing the right thing even though it can be so much harder to do.

Writing: I love her writing style in all of the books. It flows so well and is beautifully paced. With amazing plots that show the faith journeys of her characters.

All in all each book is better and better. The Kingdom of Acktar is one I will assuredly return to in the future. I’m so glad I bought the whole series. I have the final book to read!

But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us.
-II Cor. 1:9-10

“Deliver” is the fourth book in the young-adult christian fantasy series, The Blades of Acktar and I consider this the official end of the series.

We get to see Leith and company live the found-family-settles-down-together and it was so cute

Martyn!!! His parts were my favourite. He was so prickly and stubborn, I found him adorable. His character arc in dealing with guilt and anger was the best.

And the ending!!! I can’t wait to read the other short stories

This is officially my favourite of the series.

So, by all appearances, Defy should be the end of the story, right? The bad guys defeated, the kingdom restored, true love acknowledged, and they all live happily ever after. Or do they? Honestly, I'm so glad the story didn't stop there! First, because I'll take every glimpse of the happily-ever-after that I can get my grubby paws on, but second, because happily-ever-after isn't as cut and dried as we like to think. Healing takes time. Restoration takes work. Redemption doesn't erase consequences and trouble. And I loved the way this book portrayed all of that, while still bringing us ever closer to the happy, wonderful ending we've all been hoping for.

Okay, can I just say--Martyn. Never in my life have I met a more frustrating, hilarious, heart-wrenching character. He'd turn my heart to mush one minute, make me want to sock him the next, and make me laugh out loud a heartbeat later. His conversations with Shad at the beginning had me laughing, groaning, and fighting tears all at once! And I can't count the number of times I snorted out loud when he started in on what he wasn't thinking or doing at a certain moment. Obviously, he had a lot to work on, but the only thing that really bothered me was how often his habit of swearing was mentioned. Thankfully, the words weren't used, but I could have done without it being mentioned every other page.

I loved being able to see Leith and Renna in a more relaxed setting and especially their interactions with the younger members of their improvised family. <3 And bravo for being able to talk over and move past issues that keep some book couples bogged down for an entire story in just a couple of conversations! The way that Leith came to terms with different aspects of his past and the way that Renna stepped into her role as lady of Stetterly were really well done, and I can definitely sympathize with Renna's reactions after she had to stand up and take charge. ;)

There's no way I can name everything I loved about this book, especially without even more massive spoilers, so I'll end here. Let me just say, though, that there was at least one scene that actually had me in tears, even though I knew a certain person survived.

4.5 stars

Content--numerous mentions of swearing (no words and eventually corrected); fighting and blood/wounds; mentions of propriety/temptation in regard to a man and woman's living situation; ; mention of an injured man being undressed; mentions of abandonment; mentions of mistreatment by Christians;

Wow! That’s all I can say about Deliver, the fourth and final book of Tricia Mingerink’s Blades of Acktar series. This series- one of my all time favorites- ended on an incredibly strong note. I was slightly leery that this book, which I knew would be largely from Martyn’s POV, would not live up to the previous books in the series. Let me just tell you I was wrong and loved this book! Looking back over all my kindle notes I made during my late night reading of Deliver, I cannot help but shiver again thinking about the story. And it is a strong temptation to dive back in and re-read the story already :)

Healing, forgiveness, faith, trust, and redemption are woven throughout Deliver and serve as key themes. All of Acktar is reeling from the effects of the war and in need of healing. As are certain characters that have deep emotional and sometimes physical scars, they continue to endure. Each and every person in this series in affected in some way by the war.

Renna is now Lady Faythe of Walden, a town which lies mostly in charred ruins. She has greatly grown from the scared young girl that she was in Deny and does an amazing job at stepping up to her new role. As Walden is slowly rebuilt, she struggles to emotionally recover from the lingering memories of her imprisonment, her almost marriage to King Respen, and Leith’s torture.

Brandi is forever branded with memories of the carnage of the war and her time in the army. The former Blade Ranson and Blade trainee Jamie awkwardly struggle to adjust to their newly pardoned life. Are they forever chained to their past as Blades?

And Martyn- a pardoned Blade as well, but one who was loyal to Respen almost to the end except for in his one choice- to save Leith- the choice that granted him his pardon. But how can Leith and Martyn’s friendship recover after Martyn had been fully prepared to kill his best friend?

I did not expect to get so attached to Martyn in this book. But from the beginning lines in his POV, I was immediately pulled into his story even to the point that I began looking forward to the chapters from his POV more than the ones in Leith and Renna’s. He is such a misunderstood person, especially by Shad, although I can completely understand the reason for conflict between those two. Seeing into Martyn’s mind, certainly revealed to me layers of Martyn that I would not have imagined him to have, but with such a cold approach toward life, not being able to truly trust anyone. He reminded me a lot of the old Leith of book one Dare, only with an even harder and more calloused heart. I loved seeing his heart eventually soften, although, I have to say I was not expecting it to happen the way it did!

King Keevan was another character I was glad to see more of in Deliver, especially after getting a glimpse into his perspective and character in Destroy, his back-story novella. The added insight into who he was, made Deliver even better as he continues to forgive his almost murderer and soon to be cousin-in-law, Leith. Keevan is a man who I have gained a lot of respect for since his first appearance in the series. He proves himself in Deliver to be a wise ruler, putting aside his own feelings to make the decisions that are best for his people and in doing so wins the admiration of many.

Looking back to the very beginning of the series when Leith was Respen’s loyal 3rd Blade who had never failed, I know that I would have never even begun to imagine him as he is in this last book. The differences are just so stark that they would be unbelievable if not for the very evident working hand of God. He can turn the life of anyone upside down which is just one of the amazing truths that prevail throughout this series.

There is just no way for me to fully summarize my feelings about this book, especially since I am still recovering emotionally from this book. I was so worried at some points- for Martyn, especially in one particular scene which Tricia left in a cliff-hanger switching over to Leith’s POV when I was dying to know what was going to happen to Martyn; for Leith, when glimpses of the Blade within him flared to life; and for Renna, when she was alone and surrounded by her fears. Tricia is not always a nice author to us Blades of Acktar fans. I think she likes to think of us staying up nervously reading her books till three o’clock in the morning and almost having heart attacks at the same time :P

I cannot believe that the series is finished! I have loved each and every book. The Blades of Acktar series are amazing, clean, Christian, medieval, fantasy books. Read them, please! You will be doing yourself a huge favor!

First off, I loved one of the main points of this book; can they learn to be at peace, when all they've ever known is war?
This book leaves right off where the last book stooped, but from Martyn's perspective. I was interested to see his view on things, so I was pulled into the story pretty quickly. I was very happy to see Leith's story continue, even though this one was a bit more focused on Martyn's side of the story.

Leith's story was very satisfying. I really enjoyed knowing that not all his problems were fixed. People still distrust him, there are still problems. But there was so much healing, to. And the very ending was awesome; I couldn't have asked for better. I can't really say any more without giving stuff away, but I really really loved his side of the story and how true he was to his beliefs.

Martyn. Where do I even start with him. His backstory was interesting, and I really loved learning it. I think the author did a very good job of making him a very different character then Leith, which was nice. But I didn't like Martyn as much as Leith. Martyn was coarser, and had less inclinations towards good. Of course that is part of what made him interesting. I loved the portrayal of his struggle, I really felt for him sometimes.

My one complaint was actually about Martyn. Due to not being as good as Leith, he had a couple comments on propriety, and when he wakes up without a shirt on, that I didn't appreciate. This author did handle it pretty well, I just didn't really like the teasing.

Overall this was a very good end to the series. I am sad to see the character go, but I am happy seeing how their story turned out.

What I liked:

Guys, there are not enough tears. Like, at all. 😥 😥 ❤ ❤ (Sorry ’bout that.)

This is the last in the series, and it was an amazing ending. Everything was wrapped up nicely. Deliver was definitely an after-war book, but there was still enough action!! And, guys, I’m going to … ahem … admit this, but I ALMOST teared up. Like, guys, I can’t even.

And just how everything was wrapped up, it was very realistic and beautiful. A wonderful conclusion to The Blades of Acktar! And I promise that it will make you cry! Unless you don’t. Then I can’t promise you that. But you proooobably will. AGAIN, unless you don’t… However…

Sorry. Just, um, yeah. Ignore that. Completely.

Characters:

This was definitely “Martyn’s book,” which I think that Tricia (obviously) planned it that way. He has a super amount of development … which was just so lovely to see. ❤ I just ADORE Martyn, and he’s SO similar to me! He likes to think through stuff and is very logical … but hates his emotions.

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like there wasn’t a whole lot of Leith – in comparison with the other books at least (but let’s face it – will the iyfdnyhfangirls every be satisfied with the amount of Leith that we get? Yeah; probably not.). But with what he was in … I am a loyal fangirl, so I thought that he was just amazing and adorable!

Renna… For some reason, I didn’t like her as much in this book. Maybe because she didn’t have a whole lot of development, or she was shaded by Leith and Martyn, but that didn’t mean that I didn’t like her. She was super kick-butt and all. But still realistic. Thumbs up, for that!

Kayleigh was a new character … and while she was a good one, I found that the only reason I liked her was because of Martyn (maybe because she wasn’t introduced until book 4? Okay, she was technically introduced before then, as well. But whatever, you know?). 😦

Unfortunately, Brandi, Jamie, and Shad were a little left behind (in my opinion). I would have loved to see them more, but when they were in it, they were AMAZING.

Writing/Plot:

As always, I love Tricia’s writing! ❤ It’s nice and simple, but beautiful at the same time. Visual and yet, leaving a lot to the imagination. Contradictions, huh?

The plot moved along nicely. It was mainly Martyn-focused, but Martyn is pretty awesome … so I didn’t mind. Okay, scratch that. He’s really awesome. Like, yeah. Yeah. This book is a wrap-up book (like I said above), but (as I also said above) there’s also still some action.

Problems:

I feel like a lot of characters kinda got thrown under the rug. I know, I know. But maybe it’s just me. I’m a selfish reader and want Tricia to write a 1,000+ paged tome in less then a month … but hey, the readers are always right, right?

I felt like Martyn’s conversion and relationship with Kayleigh could’ve gone a little slower (basically a couple different plots).

Other/Summary:

Nobody actually curses, but rather said “he swore choice words” or something like that, so you’re cool in those regards. 😉

As for the … romance department ( 😉 😉 ), there’s a decent helping of kissing and attraction … but all definitely PG.

There’s battling and wounds and stuff … but again, I don’t feel like THIS book is above a PG.

It has STRONG Christian themes, so if that’s not your thing, then this may not be the book for you.

Anyways, I’d DEFINITELY suggest this series to all of you who would like to read a Christian fantasy book (non-magic, almost Western). Maybe teens and up? The earlier books have a lot of wounds and stuff.

Ahhhh.....this book is SO amazing! (I'm soooo afraid I might give away a spoiler, so I'm gonna put that alert on just in case ;)) Yes, I laughed. Yes, I cried. And YES, I LOVED IT!!! :D Resolved last night to finish reading this book and I stayed up until 1am. *whispers* and I don't regret it at all ;) Learning more about Martyn's past was heartbreaking, and then when he finally found well, you know who, and it was all explained...ahhhh the tears xD When I first found out that the book followed more Martyn instead of Leith and Renna and Brandi, I was a little disappointed that there wouldn't be a lot of them. But turns out, there was just enough! The book didn't stay on Martyn the whole time, but it went to Leith or Renna or Brandi and *happy sigh* LOVE it!

One of my favourite scenes? The soap scrubbing. Definitely the soap scrubbing ;P And Martyn and Kayleigh <3 <3 <3 Soooo happy that Martyn finally has a happy ending and is able to trust again. For all his tough outside character, he can be pretty sweet sometimes :)

And I want to keep writing more about how awesome amazing this book is, but I gotta go! Hopefully I can add more onto here later on. But just saying right now, if you haven't read this book yet...you must!! In fact, you gotta read the whole series if you haven't already. Because seriously you all. It's amazing. ^_^

I read Deliver in a day and it was everything I had hoped for. It’s not all that common that you follow the characters after the battle is over and I wasn’t sure how Tricia could top the high stakes of Deny. But she did it. Once the characters have had their happy ending for a moment, the thought of it being lost is dreadful.

And then there is Martyn. Leith’s best friend from the Blades. The guy who should have died in his one heroic moment rather than survive. He hadn’t got his happy ending. I wanted hi to have it and even more to know the truth. Tricia did this in such a beautiful manner. Both in the story and in his point of view. He is a sarcastic, cynical character, but so fun to read. Partly because it’s so easy to see what he’s trying to keep from admitting. He’s so close to seeing, but he doesn’t. And now I’m feeling sad,

Trying to describe these books gets harder and harder with each one. It’s like block tower, each one builds on each other and rises higher and higher in its amazingness!

*slight spoilers ahead*
In this book, we flash back and forth between Leith, Renna, and Marytn’s POV. We get to see Leith trying to be part of Setterley, and both him and Martyn struggling with “normal” life. Martyn has taken a job with King Keevan as a scout to track the Blades that were banished from Acktar and during his scouting he meets Kayleigh, a feisty woman who is all alone and hurt.

Ack I don’t even know how to describe how much I loved Martyn and Kayleigh’s banter. I loved Shad’s fierce loyalty to Leith, despite that it meant he didn’t trust or show the most kindness to Martyn. I loved Renna and Leith’s engagement/wedding. I loved Leith protecting Setterley and “finding his family” in Jamie, Ransom, Martyn, and Brandi.

There were SO MANY quotes I highlighted on my Kindle, and I want to share one of my favorites:
“An angel? The figure straightened. No, not an Angel, not unless Martyn was hallucinating an Angel with Shadrach Alister’s face.” (If you understand their relationship, you’ll know why this gave me a very real laugh 😆)

All that to say, this book really dove into the power of forgiveness and love and it built so much in the last three and half books. I loved it so much and will forever champion this series!

You ever have a book you purposely read more slowly because you just can’t bear that it’s going to end?!

Yeah. That happened. This is truly a remarkable series, and at some point I want to go and buy physical copies of it so I can keep it on my shelf forever. <3

I love Martyn and Kayleigh so much. She’s such a great new character and plays off of him so beautifully (and vice versa). My heart was breaking in several parts of this book, but we also got some much needed light moments that really made Acktar feel even more “real”.

I also love how King Keevan was handled and how his forgiveness of Leith was so realistic.

I am so glad I have some short stories / a novella left to read! I’m not ready to be done!

(Note: this book did have a couple of Reformed theology-specific things in it, and I can’t in good conscience endorse this book without mentioning them. This includes what seems to be an endorsement of “irresistible grace”, though of course it’s a fiction novel and I’m not claiming to understand everything the author believes. :) Anyway, as with earlier books, these concerns do not take away my enjoyment and I still highly recommend this series to Christians of all denominations.)

I still think things wrapped up pretty well in book 3, but you won't hear me complaining about more Leith and Renna. I'd read a book about them sitting and talking. And by the end, I loved Martyn and Kayleigh too, just not quite as much.

My Review:

4 out of 5 stars

This is the fourth book in the Blades of Acktar series by Tricia Mingerink.

Overall:

The story was exciting, full of the many characters we have come to know and love over the course of this series and a perfect finish for the series. The plot was a little slow at first, but picked up speed and by the end I was staying up late into the night to finish. I love how Tricia does such an amazing job of making a medieval country so realistic, with it’s political details, down to how they affect the average person. I really enjoyed Martyn’s storyline and his struggles as he dealt with how to handle himself after the war was over. Indeed, I enjoyed how everyone struggled to find their place and their purpose after the war was won.

Characters:

As usual for Tricia Mingerink’s stories, the characters were well rounded, with solid arcs and deep backstories, history, and chemistry. Martyn was the MC for this one, and she did such a good job of describing his problems, doubts and anger. Leith and Renna were adorable, Brandi and Jamie still my favorites of all time, and Shadrach Alistair? My friends, that dude rocks. Open-mouthed smile

Plot:

Again, started off a bit slow, but definitely picked up the pace. The last half of the book’s pacing was perfect and had me excited and dreading it by turns.

Message:

The message behind the book was expertly told through Martyn’s story line. I thought she handled his quite well with the perfect scripture and encouragement interwoven throughout.

Quibbles:

A few things here. The one struggle that I have had with the entire series is the graphicness of it’s violence. Certain things just don’t need to be described and could easily be implied. For instance, (I don’t think this is a spoiler because it happened in the previous book) there are some descriptions of a decapitated body that were entirely unnecessary and rather shocking. I don’t mind the normal, run of the mill descriptions of wounds, or injuries, but that was a little overkill. That, and one or two other moments of violence and bloodshed made me cringe, but I will say that I am a little more sensitive than most when it comes to those things. But, they could have easily been omitted without taking away from the story, and implication instead of description is sometimes better. This is the reason that I knocked one star off the rating.

Closing Thoughts:

I enjoyed the ending to this series thoroughly! Bravo to Tricia Mingerink to giving a satisfying ending with enough room to still see the characters carrying on with their lives. And thank goodness for a happy ending. I hate sad ones and this one didn’t disappoint. If you enjoy non-magical fantasy, medieval tales with plenty of swashbuckling and adventure, then you will greatly enjoy this book and the series!

Notice: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and the thoughts expressed in this article are my own opinion.

Deliver is a grand finale to the Blades of Acktar series. Filled with action from front to back, it doesn't let you down. Putting the book aside was like trying to hold your breath for an exceedingly long time. While I felt that the plot was slightly similar to some of the previous books in the series, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and that is the only reason this didn't get a 5-star review.

As with all the other books in the series, the characters were impossible not to fall in love with. They are realistic and you easily find your heart attached. You are broken-hearted when they are hurting, ecstatic when they are elated, and whole-heartedly relate to all their emotions.

I also appreciated how the characters still have struggles and flaws that are realistic. After book three, everything isn't settled, and Deliver takes care of this in a well-done manner. Friendships are restored, trust is given, family is reunited, and all the characters find their place in the world.

I'm not even sure how to write a review that gives this book justice. I enjoyed every page, every scene, every character, every situation. I'm sad only to see the series come to a close. :) I can't wait to read more of Tricia Mingerink!

Nothing like skidding into a series in the fourth book, right? I hadn't picked up Mingerink's work up to this point ... because ... you know me ... THE STYLE DESPOT. I'd heard it was the sort that makes me want to break things (like my iPad and books and computer screens and dictionaries). But ... but ... tortured heroes, I had to try, right?

I found the story to be quite, quite engaging, very likable characters, well structured dialogue and a powerful message. Yes, the style was more simplistic than I like in fantasy ... but it was well done.

Let me explain. There are fantasy writers that lay it all out in a more elementary style BUT they really meant to be epic and well crafted ... and they fail and make me want to break said items. This wasn't that. Simpler yes. A thesaurus wouldn't have hurt at times, no. But Mingerink selected her style and she did it well. She didn't overreach; she mastered her choices.

Bravo.

I would say tweens/teens would find this series most enjoyable. I know I certainly would have devoured them (before I grew up and grew too critical for my own good). But even still, the message and the endearing peeps Mingerink has made, forced even this despot to give a happy 4 star.

I'm so sad this series is almost over! I'm really loving the character arcs and watching all of them coming to terms with the past. So good!

Loved this book so much!!!!! Had to be the best in the series, although the others were also great. So sad this is the last book, but can't wait for future books from this author. Great job Tricia Mingerink!
