Isla's Reach: The Breaths and Depths

Rate this book
One catastrophe is all it takes.

The world of Iona has forgotten the time when dragons ruled the skies and their Viden riders controlled the wind.

The Evandis War, started by the long dead Cinead the Decayed, was won, but at the extermination of every dragon and rider. Evelyn, the last Viden, has been in hiding for her entire life, but no more. Once she bonds with Oretem, the last dragon, her purpose quickly turns from being the shield for those she loves, to the blade that fights to survive.

A Reticent assassin haunts her steps, one who has his own demons to battle. They both seek a single person-Meric, a bounty hunter Venandi, who the assassin endeavors to destroy and the Viden hopes to save. These three lives intertwine in ways that leave them questioning everything they've ever known. The roots of Isla's Reach burrow deep to carry the world, and it won't be long until they've broken entirely.

Best cover of 2023?

Let me start this review by stating that Francisca has contributed to my blog, and we’ve interacted many times on Instagram. I would consider Liliana as a friend, so keep that in mind!
Firstly, I cannot praise the cover enough. It screams EPIC FANTASY in the best way possible and was a key reason I wanted to pick up this book. According to the cover, this book has a wolf, an eagle and a massive dragon!? What more do you want in a fantasy book?

Let me start with the things I loved! Firstly, this novel has some great characters. Sou and Eve were my favourites, but it is clear that the author took great care in fleshing out all the characters. Secondly, the world is fascinating and feels intricate. This story has a lot of lore (which I appreciate), a fascinating magic system and various locations and cultures. Thirdly, this novel sometimes feels quite grimdark, and Liliana has no problems killing off important characters. I was pretty surprised at how many characters were killed off! Isla’s Reach is one of the most ambitious debuts I have read in a while. The scope of the story is epic, and the world-building is rich with history and lore.

However, I must highlight some things that kept this book from being a 5/5 star read. Firstly, the pacing felt quite inconsistent at times. I was actually considering DNF this novel in the first 15%, but then the book took a turn, and the next 15% - 70% flew by. However, the ending felt a bit rushed, which led to a bit of a disjointed reading experience and made it a bit more challenging to connect with all the characters. What helped me going was that I could see so much potential in this cast of characters and the world! Secondly, while I appreciate that we get a POV for the villain in this novel, I must admit that the villain felt a bit flat. It might just be a personal preference, though!

What are my concluding thoughts? Isla’s Reach is an incredibly ambitious epic fantasy novel that has almost everything I love about the genre. This book has intricate world-building, animal pet companions, dragons, a complex magic system, the found family trope and satisfying plot twists. However, I wonder if Liliana was overly ambitious with this novel considering it is a debut! Nonetheless, this world has immense potential, and I could see book 2 becoming a 5/5 read if Liliana is able to build upon everything she has crafted her! I am glad I read this novel, and I would recommend giving it a read 😊

Let me start with that – a deliciously grimdark fantasy that will rip you to shreds and then feed you the remains, just in case you didn't get hurt enough.
Absolutely brilliant work from Francisca Liliana and both the writing style and world building will grip you by the throat, immerse you in the story and won't let you go until the last page, leaving you an emotional mess (insert the meme "This book brutally destroyed me…here, you should read it).
Years after The Evandis War started by Cinaed the Decayed, the Videns are just a memory and believed to be extinct along with the dragons they are bonded, our story is followed through three POV'S.
Evelyn – the last Viden that lives hidden in a secluded mountain village, preparing for the time when she has to bond with the last living dragon Oretem and take on the responsibility of a defender…until her whole life changes in a blink of an eye.
Meric - a Venandi mercenary with far too many regrets that make him question his work and push him into the comfortable embrace of a strong drink to numb his pain.
Maun - a ruthless Reticent with nothing left but the burning need of revenge and one name in his head that fuels his actions.
Their fates, masterfully intertwined and complex, and only getting more questions in their quests for answers.
You know you read a splendid book when you sympathize and understand the villain's view, no matter how twisted and damaged he is.
If this is her debut , it's safe to say we'll hear Francisca Liliana's name a lot in the future and in a childish manner will say “I need book two NOW!”.

"She was ice and fire incarnate," he said with a tone of wonder, "but a slow ember burning, deep under the tundra."

Isla's Reach is the first book in 'The Breaths and Depths' duology, and Liliana's debut grimdark fantasy book, and it was utterly amazing.

Let me start by saying, THAT is how you write a prelude. I'm an emotional person, but that first 20 pages hooked me and had me crying and attached to characters I barely knew. This is the premise of the entirety of the book: emotional heartache. I knew I was going to love this book, for Francisca and I have similar tastes, but she far surpassed my expectations. I will be reading every single thing she writes from now on, and thanking her for breaking my heart into a million pieces each time. She has converted me into a full grim dark girlie now, and I'm grateful.

After the incredible and intense prelude, Liliana spells the reader with clever, lyrical prose and epic world-building. This brilliantly immersive beginning gives detailed and intricate history into the world of Iona, captivating the reader with the fascinating characters and magical lore. It was so easy to get swept away in this rich world and embark on a journey of adventure, heroism, heartache, strength, friendship and loss. Our story is told through three POVs, which each character having such a special place in my heart.

First we have Evelyn, our resilient, resourceful FMC. She lives a simple life, hidden away as the last Viden, preparing for her dangerous yet dutiful responsibility to bond with the dangerous dragon, Oretem. When her world is devastatingly turned upside down, she must gather strength and wit from the depths of her soul to continue her quest. I absolutely adore Evelyn, and would kill to have her as my best friend. She's not only clever and an excellent fighter, but she's a kind person and an even better friend. (NOTE: She did NOT deserve the tragic losses she suffered, and her story touched me so much that I was a chaotic mess; rage crying voice notes to Francisca. YOU KNOW what you did, Frankie.) Oretem, the grumpy, insane, ominous dragon, was a favourite character and I could vastly compare him to Paragon from The Liveship Traders trilogy by Robin Hobb; which is my favourite character and series of all time. The way they shared thoughts and had dangerous, devastating encounters scratched a dark dragon itch that was so, so satisfying.
THAT'S how you write an immortal dragon.

We also have Meric-a Venandi mercenary with a colourful past and love of a strong drink-and Maun, a ruthless Reticent with one soul mission: revenge. Maun was another character I didn't expect to love as much as I did, for he is one dark mother****er. His soul was so tortured, his mind such a concise space of organised chaos. Even his dark deeds made me have empathy and understanding for him. I really enjoyed his POV chapters, and he ended up being one of my favourites in the story, which is such a testament to Liliana's writing. These three and their fates are so masterfully intertwined and connected, it left me with burning questions and extreme anticipation for book two. I also loved two side characters with my entire soul, Grae and Sou aka "Soup". Each for different reasons, but the mentor trope is strong with these two; both of them being the mentors to other MCs in our story. Their wisdom and wit, banter and dialogue provided some such needed laughter to this deliciously devastating tale.

And I'll finish the way I started, with mentioning that absolutely insane postlude. CHILLS. Francesca is a MASTER of her craft with the foreshadowing, surprises and interlacing of each character into the bigger plot. Just impeccable, and I cannot recommend this book enough.

Some of my favourite quotes and descriptions:

"The dragon released a sound that resembled a rockslide, tumbling into glass and breaking through ice. Evelyn smiled as she realised Oretem was laughing--she didn't know dragons could laugh."

"Bliss is a far-off world I fear may never collide with mine again."

"Shame was a companionable friend to her grief; together they crushed her confidence."

"It's only when you've lost someone to the wind forever do you realise what you would be willing to do given this exact opportunity. "

"Forgiveness is a sacrifice, but death is everlasting. Once gone, it will always be too late."

"Burn them all..."

WARNINGS: and I do mean warnings. I am twisted and I love emotional devastation in my fantasy tales (see George RR Martin, John Gwynne & Robin Hobb ), and this one had quite a few dark themes: violence, blood, death, abuse, grief, and trauma were consistent throughout the entirety of the story. Liliana did not shy away from the dark details, yet she also gave those scenes gravity and respect.

The author is possibly best known as WitchKingReads for great reviews, and I was so excited when I saw she was writing! This is book 1 of The Breaths and Depths and there’s definitely more to come. Not sure how they can top this cover though!

The world was interesting and the characters come alive. The magic is super important but comes across as more of an undertone than an actual moving piece of the plot. But that in itself is actually part of the plot, which I won’t mention because spoilers. Iona’s Breath is harnessed by those able and it’s kind of like being an airbender or wind controller.

The thing that stuck out to me—as it took me a full month to read this which is not usual for me—is that part one builds into such a climax, with so much happening and it’s so brutal, that afterwards it just feels like starting over. I of course applaud any style attempt that isn’t the exact norm, but usually with a journey based fantasy you start on the bottom knowing you’re going uphill the entire time to the climax. It certainly doesn’t go into slog territory at all, but it was harder for me to adjust. Especially coming off of so much loss in part one, I just didn’t feel like I had long enough with the characters. Of course the ending climax is awesome and actiony, it just didn’t feel as big as part one.

I enjoyed the world, and people, and the possibilities. I believe the things left undone or unsaid in this one will built to an absolutely explosive second novel. I look forward to it. Personally a 3/5* thank you for the arc, I preordered one too!

First of all thanks so much to the author for providing an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review but also I kinda need book two now!!!!! Also yes I got the e-arc but have you seen that cover? buying the book soon because I need it for my shelves!!

technically a 4.5 stars but marking up on GR because of just plain enjoyment factor and that I honestly do think that if you are interested in Grimdark as a genre but are not sure where to start I would recommend this one.

This book was such a rollercoaster, I will say I have read my fair share of Grimdark books (although by no means is it my most read sub-genre) but I feel like I have read nothing quite like this. It was deliciously dark while allowing that darkness to breathe - any heavier topics that were touched upon were given the time to be explored and were handled with due care in my opinion which was one thing I was a little worried about because often in grimdark you get dark-subjects just for the sake of it because its the genre and its shocking and I'm just so happy that that wasn't the case in this book. I also really liked the emphasis that was placed on recovery after these dark things that happened and seeing the main character struggle with this and learning to adapt to her new reality after these really world shattering events.

The story itself is really good and I had such a good time with it, Evelyn is such an interesting main character to follow and im so curious to learn more about her (hopefully soon!!!!!) in the next book. I also really liked Meric & Maun who are also POV characters and I think all 3 of them have very different and distinct voices that it made for a very interesting story. I'm very interested in seeing what they will do next because those last 3 chapters were mind blowing and I need answers soon.

I will say just because this is an honest review and I want to also just mention some things I struggled with but I also don't feel like they matter too much since, as you can read above, I still clearly enjoyed this book but anyone who has read any of my reviews knows I can be nitpicky. I do think there were some bits that clearly could've used some more editing because here and there there were passages and phrases that just didn't flow well and therefore took me out of the story a little (but again overall the writing was good, but its never good to have to go back and reread a page because its just not clear and all of this could easily be fixed by a good editor with a red marker) - this might also just be an e-arc thing so please please please don't deny yourself this story based on that its just something I struggled with that is just something I wanted to mention becuase it felt dishonest not to.

Being a hero means far more than blindly following fate with incorruptible morality; being a hero means giving hope when all you can feel is grief and fear.

Torn asunder by the echoes of war, the world Iona has lost touch with the magic it once knew. Dragons are considered extinct, relics of the past, while their riders are the uncounted casualties of war. So, when Evelyn takes on the mantle of Viden, the first dragon rider in 20 years, she faces a fate of uncertainty. All she has is a frightening pursuer with dark intentions, the shared madness of an immortal dragon, and a name whispered on the wind. Can she bear the burden of being the rebirth of her people? Or will the world she knows and people she loves feel the fires of hate and flames of fear?

Francisca Liliana’s “Isla’s Reach” is the first book in “The Breaths and Depths” series that is a brilliantly immersive start to both the world and history of Iona. The gravity by which Iona exists pulls us swiftly into an epic story full of adventure, heroism, and loss. No matter which character we are following, we are drawn in, awaiting the answers to their actions and the thoughts that carry them forward. And while we may not be mercenaries, dragon riders, or even control the wind, the depths within the minds and emotions of each of these characters makes them feel real. Like I have been handed the journal of my closest friend and been left to relive their adventures.

Warnings: This novel did contain themes such as violence, blood, mild language, (mentioned) abuse, grief, and death. Liliana did not disregard the gravity of such scenes and handled those scenes in ways that were not overly gratuitous.

With a mastery over language and world-building, Liliana’s “Isla Reach,” is sure to remind readers of those familiar words and worlds of Christopher Paolini and J.R.R Tolkien, with the refreshing air of something new. She created a world that will forever grow with the promising stories hidden in the fates of her characters. It has been a long time since I was reminded of my bookish youth and the stories that inspired me. This book has done it, and I know for certain anyone who picks it up will not just fall in love with Iona, but with the arts of reading and storytelling again.

Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Isla’s Reach had my attention from the first few pages. This book is filled with adventure and anticipation. I particularly loved her relationship with her wolf. The book has a rich descriptive narrative and there were instances where I could feel deeply for the characters. Overall an excellent read, can’t wait for the next one. Impressive vocabulary.

I received a copy of Isla’s Reach through a giveaway and I’m so glad I did as this book had been on my TBR for a long time. I now know, I should have read it ages ago, as it exceeded my expectations in every way and made me a fan of the fantastic world Francisca has created.

Isla’s Reach is the first book in the Breaths and Depths trilogy set in the world of Iona. This is an adventurous, grimdark novel, filled with themes of family, friendship and trauma and set in a world where dragon companions and magic are the norm.

Isla’s Reach started with a bang, following on from a gut-wrenching prologue, before introducing us to its protagonist and last Viden – Evelyn. Evelyn grew up within the shadow of The Evandis War, sequestered away in a tiny mountain village, with only her grandmother as family. Evelyin is just moments before bonding with her dragon, and all seems perfect. That is before Maun arrives and Evelyins entire life is turned upside down, sending her on an epic quest, fraught with danger, minimal allies and a Reticent assassin on her heels.

Evelyn was a really interesting protagonist, I think her personality really shone throughout the book, alongside her emotional response to such a rollercoaster of events. She also seemed believable. I loved how much importance she placed on family and friends. I also loved her companionship with Sou, who was her guide and teacher throughout the story. The two other protagonists were Meric and Maun. Meric we don’t see until a little later, but I found his introduction fit well into the pace of the plot. I also loved his ragtag group of companions. Maun on the other hand was the antagonist of the story, or should I say Reticent assassin. This man alongside his raptor bird Saiya, who actually communicated for him, made for a very unique antagonist. In my mind these two encompassed an evil pairing, however their depth and trauma revealed later in the book made for some great storytelling and answered questions as to his motivations. There were also some other pretty cool animal companions, but I won’t mention those…

The writing was excellent throughout the novel. Francisca really knew how to keep my on the edge of my seat. The pace was exactly what I look for in such a novel with a delicious grimdark level of violence, alongside emotional moments and a vivid description of Iona.

If you’re looking for an interesting new world to explore, filled with great characters, dragons, animal companions, assassins and more, then you’re looking in the right place. I highly recommend you try this excellent novel… and be ready for some emotional moments!

I should also mention….that cover is stunning!

The first book in 'The Breaths and Depths' duology, and Francisca Liliana's debut grimdark fantasy novel, follows Evelyn, the last of the Videns, bonded with the final living dragon. However, her life is turned upside down when everything dear to her is destroyed, and a Reticent assassin haunts her every step, battling his own demons.

"Islas Reach" presents multiple POVs that help in understanding the characters' drives and decisions throughout the novel. It's insightful to glimpse the antagonist's POV to comprehend their thoughts and internal struggles.

The story starts a bit slowly, understandably laying the foundation for Francisca's new world and introducing the extensive history. As the initial chapters set this groundwork, the pacing gradually increases to a comfortable level. Vital information isn't overlooked, and key moments are fully appreciated.

Francisca excels in character interaction, creating a profound sense of companionship between them. I could have easily read multiple chapters of the characters conversing about their pasts or sharing stories.

Overall, "Islas Reach" is a promising start to the duology. I'm intrigued to discover what lies ahead for these characters I've grown attached to and what more there is to uncover about them. If you enjoy a tale of camaraderie, coupled with significant revelations and compelling action sequences, then this book is for you.

Thank you for the ARC! This is beautifully written with such a compelling story and realistic characters. Everything intertwined so perfectly and left me shocked so often. I will definitely be auto-buying everything Francisca writes from now on. I’ll even read all her suggested reads, I trust her with my reading future.

So I am an emotional person but I’ve never cried from a 20 ish page prelude before… the following initial 15% of the story is slow, because everyone is happy and life is simple. I was starting to wonder if anything would happen. But then everything happened all at once and it never stopped! I was left grabbing whatever was closest to me while screaming, I was so immersed in this story and really regretted my disregard for everyone’s past happiness…
This was such a roller coaster of an adventure. I felt all the emotions! I cried and shouted quite a lot, which startled my husband a few times..

This story is told through multiple POVs and there was never a character I didn’t want to dive into!
Evelyn is taking space in my favorite characters list now. I want to bundle her up and hug her. She is the person you’d want at your side to help you through the worst times. The drive and dedication she has for all things living was astounding, she was never not trying to do the right thing. She’s such a good person and I love her! Really the whole band of venandi’s were amazing and memorable as well.

Honestly this has the best set of characters that I’ve read in quite some time, it was so easy to fall in love with every characters. I mean how can I like the bad guys? Because I do. I love torturous crazy Maun just as much as I love kindhearted Evelyn.

Be forewarned that there is trauma, talk of child abuse and quite a bit of death within this story. But it is well done with a lot of thought and care.

I cannot wait for the next part of this story and every emotion I know I’ll be forced to feel! This time I’ll have the tissues ready.

This one was really hard to rate. I couldn't put this book down for long. The overall world and plot is captivating. But there are a lot of ways it can be improved. First, there were a ton of typo's and grammatical errors; so many that it took me out of the experience at times. And although not technically incorrect, there were are a lot of weird phrases and word choices that could be improved. Also, for how long this book was, I honestly expected more to happen. I didn't think the whole book would be them traveling. I expected there to be more plot development towards the overarching endgoal. We only got the tiniest peak at the dragon. And instead, we got way too much inner dialogue. I found myself skimming a lot trying to make the story progress faster. But the way all of the characters are interconnected is very clever. And I do really like our main group. I was a little skeptical when we first met some of them, but they grew on me. However, despite all the good and bad about this book, the most powerful lasting impression is how bleak it was. It was truly hard to get through at times. And by the end, it was almost too much. I honestly don't know if I can read the next one. Usually, after finishing a book this good, I would be dying to read the next one, but it was too mentally draining and I need a break.

Isla's Reach is the first book in the Breaths and Depths duology, a grimdark novel that constitutes the debut of Francisca Liliana, also known for her labour as a book reviewer. A delicious grimdark adventure, which screams epic fantasy from the prelude to the ending, with well-fleshed characters and really elaborated prose at some points that made me enjoy it even more.

After a prelude that throws us directly into what happened at the Evander War, we start following Evelyn, the last Viden, a girl that has been in the hide in her small village, Verbena, until now; all to assume a role as protector of her people bonding the last dragon, Oretem. Her role soon changes, after a catastrophe devastates Verbena, having Evelyn fight to survive while on the run.
A Reticent assassin, Maun, with his own demons to fight, is chasing her; hoping he will also find Meric, a Venandi bounty hunter who has too many regrets, who he hopes to destroy. Meanwhile, Evelyn hopes to find and save him from Maun, hopefully repairing her bond with Oretem, because if not, the world she knows might end in fire and destruction.

Liliana intertwines those three POVs (Evelyn, Maun, and Meric) to create a story of epic proportions, which lands a little bit more on the side of being a character-driven novel. This ends up being one of the main strengths of this title, as we have fully-fleshed characters, with extraordinary depth; you might end up disliking some of them (Maun's POV is extremely dark at some points), and others end up growing into you. Evelyn is particularly interesting, as she lives a particularly complicated experience, a total rollercoaster of emotions, going from the happiness of bonding with Oretem, to the grief after being unable to protect Verbena from its destruction, to the uncertainty of being in the run; a really complete character that passes so many things.

This book also has an extremely complex world-building, including animal companions (we have several of them during the plot) and a soft system of magic. The own world has its history, whose consequences we are experiencing during the novel (with some of the most important moments being presented with flashbacks); in general, Liliana has nailed this aspect of writing.

Pacing is kinda slow at the start, being used this space as a sort of introduction to Isla's Reach and its world; but soon it picks up, and all the previous work done pays off, making the book an authentic page-turner once we have passed the initial arc. From that moment, it will slow to let us breathe a bit in before inflicting more emotional damage (seriously, this book is a rollercoaster of emotions).

I don't want to end this review without commenting on Liliana's prose, because I feel it is one of the aspects I appreciated more from her craft. There are so many memorable moments and phrases I would have liked to highlight, all on top of this excellent story.

Isla's Reach is an excellent debut novel, perfect for those that enjoy grimdark stories with an epic scope. Francisca Liliana has jumped into my list of authors I will read whatever they write, and can't wait for the second book of the duology.

Isla's Reach is the first book in the Breaths and Depths series, and serves as Francisca Liliana’s debut novel. It’s a beautifully-written grimdark fantasy set in the world of Iona, where dragons used to rule the skies. This changed after the dragons and their riders, known as Viden, were exterminated during the Evandis War. In the present day, Evelyn, the last of the Viden, lives hidden away and bonds with the last remaining dragon, Oretem. We also follow ruthless assassin Maun on his relentless quest for revenge. Meanwhile these two are seeking a mercenary named Meric, whom Maun wants to kill and Evelyn wants to save. The author intertwines these three POVs and plotlines remarkably well. The characters are fully fleshed-out and feel very real. They have understandable motivations and distinct personalities. It becomes easy to sympathize with all of them no matter their actions. As we see our main characters go through traumatic events and grief, we also see them mature and develop realistically. This makes for a great character-driven experience.

-
The world-building and magic system aren’t too complex, but still descriptive and interesting. The history of the world plays an important part in the story. We see how the events of the past are impacting the present with consequences. Despite not being complex, it’s still a very detailed world full of life and history.

The pacing is a bit inconsistent and can be improved, but it doesn’t take too much away from the story. Once things pick up the plot moves along smoothly and makes the book hard to put down. Liliana has a beautiful writing style and prose that she uses to make the world of Iona come to life. I recommend Isla’s Reach to fans of epic grimdark fantasy, dragons and animal companions, and character-driven stories. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens to these characters in the next book!

I usually don't like reading first books in a series, without them having sequels (if not a completed series). But, for some reason...I really wanted to read this book.

They say, "don't judge a book by its cover", but I do. Sorry.

I was attracted to this story...I had heard that it was not for the faint at heart. So, I braced myself and read.

The first part was fairly straight forward, but when I got to the second part...I felt lost, like I hadn't been paying attention (enough). So, I backed up and reread (from Chapter 11 to 21) and I am so thankful that I did that. I also wrote down all the pertinent characters, to that point) and then the story fell into place. A smarter person wouldn't have gotten lost, but what can you say?

Obviously, we love Evelyn. She's the beating heart of the story. But, wow! You've put her through the mill.

One of the things that I have been thinking about while reading this story, and now afterwards...is how do we deal with death (near to us, inflicted ON us, and when we've had to cause death). It changes a person...to have been young, and seen death. There are many examples of this, in this story (of the good and the evil). The death of someone SO close, that it seems like a little part of you...has died too. This one is such a sad piece of life. Then also, the death that the character (or us) have to deal onto another, for survival. So many layers of grief are involved.

I have suffered death of family near to me...at a young age...and also lost loved ones along the way (none were done by violent means, but still). I also have never killed anyone, but through this story...I vicariously FELT their pain...each step of the way.

Loved the "found family" trope, and how...it was hard fought. Nothing in this story comes easy. The ones we hate and the ones we love...take a toll on us.

I look forward to the sequel...and all your other stoires in the futue.

I'm impressed, and scarred, and impressed, at the gumption of this writer.
The absolute cheek to make you love characters and then snatch them away from you.
I love it!
Very excited for the next part and whatever trauma Francisca sees fit to throw my way!

What an amazing first ARC to receive - I definitely cried a bit at the end of this one! This debut book has all the things I love about high fantasy novels but is less dense, making it a wonderful place for fantasy readers to start if they're interested in reading more high fantasy. I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the 2nd book!

DNF @ 15%

There's a really interesting world here, and I think an interesting story as well, but I just could not get into it enough to find out. I liked the little hints of magic, and the wider scope of it that is alluded to, in particular the dragon bonding and the skills shared through that bond.

Although I didn't get *too* far into it, I could tell that there was promise here, and on another day, perhaps I might have found more enjoyment from it, but sadly, not this day.

Although I would never normally say so, the main reason for my lack of enjoyment was that I was too-often distracted by the number of technical issues I found. Every book will have errors, regardless of how many times it has been edited or proofread, but the number (and type) of errors I found in the opening 15% here really prevented me from finding my stride while reading. Too many times I was thrown by an incorrectly used word, a new spelling of a character's name that I had to go back and double-check, or a sentence that I had to read several times to understand the (presumed) intention of.

This is a beautiful-looking book that has obviously had a lot put into it, but sadly, I think it was let down at the very end. Ignoring all of the issues I found, I think there could be a good book here, but it was just too much for me.

I was given an ARC copy of this book for an honest review and it’s late in coming as my 4yr old and new born are not liking me getting reading time, but here it is.
Wow. I didn’t know what to expect from Isla’s Reach, all I knew for certain was that Francisca does a mighty fine job with her bookstagram and getting Felix Ortiz to do the cover art is always a big yes from me. And man what a cover it is, undeniably beautiful.
The book started in a not dissimilar vein as other epic fantasy/grimdark books do, but pretty soon into the story you become painfully aware that Liliana has succeeded tremendously in putting this book in its very own lane. I actually got up out of my chair whilst reading somewhere around chapter 12 as I don’t think I’ve read a book that gave me a physical reaction the way this did.
The charm of the characters are undeniable. You bond with them and the animal companions as they bond with each other throughout the story and the real surprise and testament to the writing is that you even end up bonding with the villain as you are taken through his journey of understanding what he has and is going through. And don’t get too comfortable with the characters as Liliana does not hesitate in her ruthlessness. It’s savage and I love it.
The world building is excellent written with a very eloquent prose, being forced into the situations that unfold for the characters by the description of their surroundings.
I’m really looking forward to finding out more about the Viden (dragon riders) and the amazing magic systems of not only them but the Vagu.
If this is to be put into the grimdark category, it is grimdark done at its grimmest which for me is a massive plus point. Darker the better. But it also has some really nice moments too and you can add this as another notch to the writing. One minute you’re flying high and the next you’re trying to pick your feelings up with broken fingers.
My only criticism is that in the latter part of the book the, who’s stories sadder, and trading of shame and I could’ve done more does get a bit grating.
Other than that this book is a triumph. It repeatedly kicks you in the chest, not only turning your heart into pulp but breaking all your ribs in the process and leaving you bloodied on the side of the road.
I look forward to the next instalment

The first book in a high fantasy duology with a gorgeous cover AND just over 600 pages of darkness, multi-povs, vivid characters/prose, and DRAGONS?!?! Holy shit, have I found myself a good one. Grimdark fantasy set in a new world, especially when that world has magic, is a must-read for me. It helps that these characters are incredibly well-written, and the world-building is both dark and packed with so much nuance that it's hard to fit all my ravings about it into a single review. The first slice of the book does drag on a little slowly, which tends to be a similarity in upwards of 90% of high fantasy novels I read, and some of that has to do with the utter breadth of new worlds and the impossible task of making it digestible but also giving the reader enough to go off of. Liliana does this well, though not perfectly, but enough for me to trudge through one or two bits before totally falling in love with the story she's created. I'm indifferent with multiple POVs, but I think it fits this book well. I preferred some more than others (Evelyn is my sweet, kind-hearted love, and Maun is a stark opposite to her but is somehow just as fun to read), but not to a stupidly high degree (so, yeah, I loved all these characters), and I thought it was fitting enough to tell the story in this particular way. As a whole this book is pretty spectacular, and I'm following Liliana now so I know when the second book in this riveting series is out. This book is on the darker side of high fantasy, but if you're a reader like myself who loves the (careful) inclusion of violence, gore, and trauma, then it's a book you can't skip over.

Isla's Reach, book 1 in The Breaths and Depths Duology, by Francisca Liliana
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First off, the biggest of thank yous to Francisca for sending me this gorgeous, personalized signed edition! And happy release day as well!!

💫Time for some book thoughts! 💫

From the 1st page, it was pretty impressive that this was a debut fantasy book. We all know Frankie has a way with words, but the writing pops out at the reader from the opening page.

Ive thought long about this, but I would classify this book as both plot driven, AND character driven. From the opening scenes, shit is hitting the fans, and survival is key. Oh, and dragons 😉

The animal companions and the magic were really cool and unique elements of the book as well. There's a lot of room left to explore both in the second book as well I'm sure.

If I had one critique of the book, I'd say that the pacing was a little slow at times. BUT... those slower times allowed for some fantastic character development moments...

We had "oh shit" moments, "oh she did not" moments, and at least 2 "Frankie, we're not on speaking terms" moments as well. For a book to come out and grab me in the 1st book of a series is pretty rare, so kudos for that 👏

I really enjoyed this book, and I really think it had to do with its dark nature. It's not light hearted. It's bloody. And pain is inflicted to good and bad peeps. If you live to have your heart trampled on, read Isla's Reach. I recommend this for fantasy fans, and especially Grim dark fans.

Congrats Francisca- this is a helluva book and a fantastic debut, looking forward to the next! 🍻

The Evandis War was won but at a high cost. All of the dragons and their riders, the Viden, were killed in the battle. Twenty years after the war, Evelyn, the last remaining Viden, is finally ready to come out of hiding and bond with the last dragon, Ortem. Maun, a reticent assassin, however, has other plans for the dragon. Evelyn’s life is quickly turned upside down and she has to flee to save her life. Their paths collide as both Maun and her seek the same man, Meric, but for completely different reasons.

Isla’s Reach is a fantastic debut from author, Francisca Liliana. The world she has built is very immersive and the characters are compelling. The story is very grimdark, in the best possible way, especially in the first third of the book. The author does a great job and getting you to care about these characters, so you feel the loss when something happens to one of them.

There are three points of view in the novel, Evelyn, Meric, and Maun. I enjoyed the perspectives of Evelyn and Meric, however, I never really connected with Maun. I am typically excited when we get a POV from the villain in the story but Maun felt a little one-dimensional. I kept thinking that he would eventually grow on me as his story unfolded, yet, I never really connected with him and found his chapters the least engaging in the novel.

This is a grimdark fantasy story with dragons, animal companions, magic, assassins, bounty hunters, beautiful world-building, and excellent characters, what more do you need? In the end, I enjoyed Isla’s Reach and am excited to see how Francisca concludes the story in the second book.

Can I make indie authors debuts my new favourite genre? I mean this is just another brilliant instalment of fantasy.

Francisca has found a way to grab your emotions from the depth of your black heart and smear them all over the pages, and you end up thanking her for it.

Following Evelyn’s journey through every page is a wonderful experience. Seeing her grow and face adversity through out the book was the reason I was hooked from the start. Following the classic fantasy journey Isla’s Reach doubles down with one of the best found family storylines I’ve read recently and reminding you of why you fell in love with fantasy book like lord of the rings, and kingkiller.

With beautifully descriptive prose you will have no problem imagining the green fields and artic landscapes as you read through tear filled eyes.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It’s a 5/5 with nothing but excitement for the second instalment. I cannot wait to see where the story goes in the finally instalment of this duology

This cover has to be my favorite of all the books I've read recently. It's absolutely amazing. And so is the story within it!

Right at the start, you're immersed into this fascinating world. At first, I wasn't exactly sure if I understood what the hell was going on....but i F'N loved it. The prelude was so epic feeling with tons of emotion. Like feeling attached to those characters even though I didn't even know them. Just the way it was written, so well done to setup the emotional trauma coming up. And it comes fast, lol 😆.

The world building is some of my favorite here. It's very immersive, detailed, and intricately done to elaborate, not only on the world itself, but the history of it as well. The characters are so well done too. All 3 POVs are so well done that you can't help but love these characters. Some of the best banter between characters as well!

I really enjoyed this one and can not wait to continue this story!

4/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was especially interested in seeing Liliana's first published book in the SFF genre, knowing her high praise for the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. This book did not disappoint, starting off strong and then concluding both with intensity and significant revelations that have me already looking forward to the sequel. Something that I especially praise was that how she invested in characterization, with all having their distinct ways of talking, and all being uniquely shaped by their past circumstances. She invested in characterization, and it was in the last 20% of the book where there was a significant payoff.

If anyone is looking for character-driven grimdark, but also with intense action sequences from the beginning to end, I'd certainly recommend this.

I think the author genuinely has a beautiful ability to write. Her ability to create a scene, describe a feeling has a world of potential and I can absolutely see her future works taking off. There were several moments where it felt really slow however. And grief and loss to a point where if you’re looking for a good dragon book, that’s not the plot of this story. ;) I think in time, the authors works will be a bit more cohesive and fluid.

What a debut! From a cover that is quite likely as masterful a work as “The Mona Lisa” to the intricate story with all the familiar trappings of revenge, a soldier who has seen too much and now is too friendly with the bottle, and enough grimdark to sate your sadistic appetites, this one has it all.

I'm desperate for the sequel to this!

Honestly this book has it all, dragons, (look at that cover!) found family, animal companions, rich world building, creepy, creepy assassins and badass grandparents.

Amazing for a debut, Francisca Liliana NEEDS to be on your TBR
