Welcome to the Triangle, where wereleopards romp, the dead talk back, and blood-thirsty predators stalk through the city's darkest hours.

But when the doors open at Forever Crossed, the only funeral home in the Carolinas with an anti-rising guarantee, Olivia Peters is ready for anything the night may bring.

At least she thinks she is. Between dating the wereleopard's Ra'Jahn and working for the city's Undead Ruler, her world is a whole lot more dangerous than it used to be. And to top it all off, the wereleopards believe that she’s their prophesied Shaman, a witch who is neither human nor wereleopard.

Olivia denies being a witch or their prophesied Shaman, but she can’t deny the claim their leader is making on her heart . . .

The most important thing to know about this book -- it was meant to be a series and was written in 2004. There is no trace of this author since 2008. I don't know what it means but had I known going in, I would not have read this. It does not appear to have a future and that's just a shame. It's pretty good.

Olivia Peters is our heroine and she is a grief counselor at Forever Crossed funeral home. Why, because she can cross over the dead and that's important when 'dead' does not mean departed in this alternate reality set in NC. We have vamps, shifters, fae, and an assortment of magical beings living out in the open alongside humans. The fantasy setting is similar to the Sookie Stackhouse series (Dead Until Dark) but it's unique enough that you don't really notice it right away. Olivia is smarter than Sookie and not as willing to believe these creatures are harmless. I liked her for that alone. She knew when to be scared.

Olivia tells the story in first person and does a great job of not boring me with useless details. Even her monthly cycle was interesting. The only flaw in Olivia's narration was the fact that the book started out funny and light hearted then went dark. It was an odd experience but not a deal breaker.

Olivia is hired to help find a rogue vampire. She doesn't want to for many reasons including the fact that she doesn't trust vampires or any supernatural beings to keep fangs and claws to themselves. The vampire leader, Antonio, and the hot were leopard, Luka, convince Olivia that she should take on the case working alongside the cops. Olivia had already been to one crime scene and agreed that the rogue needed to go down. Things get tricky when Luka makes Olivia's heart skip a beat or two. Olivia is unprepared for the attraction or the fact that he is of the race of supernatural that nearly killed her when she was younger. Luka is attracted to Olivia so, of course, he goes with the hands off but keep teasing approach to seduce and confuse her. I was not amused. Then we have Antonio, also hot, but Olivia doesn't want him and his sexuality is questionable. We also have Olivia's attraction to Cole. Another hot were leopard who is a friend with possible benefits if not for Luka. The whole romance element of the book was annoying.

Forever Crossed earned four stars because it was actually very good. The mystery of the killer's identity was solved early on. The fun was in the chase. Olivia had to learn on the fly but she was never stupid. She made sure she could defend herself and had a healthy dose of suspicion. She did need to be rescued a few times but she held on own for the most part. The magical elements were easy to understand. Olivia and the supporting characters were well thought out and believable. If there is ever another book, it would be an auto-purchase for me. The book does not end in a cliffhanger but does end without fully developing Olivia's magical skills. She had not officially accepted that she was a Shaman for Luka's tribe. I would say this book is mostly Urban Fantasy with a romance or two for fluff. There is one sex scene at the very end of the book. I won't say who Olivia hooked up with because by then, I really didn't care. I liked Olivia with or without a lover. This is an inexpensive Kindle adventure if you love Urban Fantasy with romance.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it almost 20 years ago and it still crosses my mind because the author disappeared after it was written. Not literally. It seemed to be the start of a series but nothing else has been released. Every now and the I look it up again in the vain hope that the author may be writing again. There is some resolution so it can be read as a stand alone, more like a happy for now ending.

Overall, a really fun, gripping read. The usual world of vampires and shifters (wereleopards in this case)- and a territorial war among vampires which affects humans and weres. The heroine, who is sort of a witch (she's not sure what she is and develops more powers through the book) who allies with the head vamp and wereleopards against a murderer who can give vamps a bad name.
