Despite all the preparations for her party and her father's gift of a beautiful carousel, Alex is disappointed when her father does not get home in time for her birthday, in a beautifully illustrated, perceptive story about a child's feelings.
I like this book because it was about a birthday party and Alex said that she had ice-cream for her party and she had special friends who took a picture of her. Carousel reminded me of my party because she opened up presents like I did at my birthday party. I also got cake and ice-cream for my party. I also had to blow out my birthday candles. In closing, I like this book because it reminded me of my birthday party.
This is a fresh take on the old trope of carousel animals coming to life. Not only is a Black child experiencing the magic this time around, but she's not thrilled with getting a toy carousel for her birthday, because her Daddy didn't make it home in time for her party.
One of the worst birthdays ever becomes ... well, not so bad.
The carousel has several ideal species on it, but Our Protagonist's favorite is a zebra.
Story aside, the full-color illustrations are tremendous. There is a lit of realism put into this bit of childish whimsy.
