About the author

Linda Chapman was born in Liverpool in 1969. She had many different jobs before becoming a full-time writer in 1999 including working as a theatre stage manager, a dog trainer, a bookseller, a nanny, a teacher and a research assistant. She has written over 300 books for children, some under her own name, others under different names and she often collaborates with other authors. She is currently writing books with Julie Sykes and they are co-authors on the NYT bestselling Unicorn Academy series as well as Mermaid Academy, Forever Homes and Pocket Unicorns. Linda lives in Leicestershire with her husband, three children, two horses and three dogs. She has written many different series including: My Secret Unicorn, Star Friends, Best Friends Bakery, Stardust, Skating School and, most recently, Magic Keepers and Moonlight Riders.

Rating for my 9 year old horse loving daughter. She loved it so much she made me promise I would read as well. As a 42 year old horse lover, I also enjoyed. Reminded me of an elementary version of Fourth Wing.

Young Amara loves horses and has a huge connection to them, so she asks at the stables near by to work there, whilst there she forms a connection with a unique horse called Ember, but the girl that rides him doesn’t like her or want her near the horse at all.

I really loved the connection she had with Ember and the magic that they built up together, it was really sweet and reading about the other kids and their horses magical connections were also really great. Each magical horse had a unique way of deeply connecting to one human and I loved that it was really special and sweet.

I didn’t like that bullying was a heavily used topic within this story, it would have been okay with just a little bit but it was over used and was harsh and very mean. It went from just one girl bullying her, to a group of them and then a meaner girl and her horse. It was just all a bit much and definitely ruined a lot of the magic and beauty of the story for me.

This was really not what I expected it to be, it still had some of its beautiful magic things, it had a beautiful connection between a cute little girl and her best friend horse. However it also had a massive let down in story too with the heavily done bullying. I love magical horse stories but I cannot say I was the biggest fan of this one as a whole, in parts I loved it, in parts I didn’t.

Reading this to my five-year-old granddaughter Ily was a bit of a challenge. Apparently she picked up the book at a book fair because of the cover artwork. When a kid hands you a book, you read it; when they want to wander, you can’t lasso them.

Ily liked the drawings inside, but she isn’t quite at the age where she can go for three pages of prose without a break.

I, on the other hand, cannot break mid-rising action. As it turns out, Amara, the 11-year old’s conflict—trying to ride bareback while galloping—was one I had at 8-years old.

While I’m tempted to write my own story, it would have none of the magic Linda Chapman’s Midnight Riders: Fire Horse has.

My four stars has nothing to do with getting Ily through the book. She would always come back to it, so the rough part was more about her attention span than the writing. The lost star came from my feeling that Moonlight Stables was Gryffindor and that Storm Stables was Slytherin. Certainly Rowling has no trademark on magic, but I thought the complications could have another layer of complication. Perhaps that will come as the series trots along.

I enjoy the premise of this book and the idea of elemental ponies. That's pretty cool and can go places.

While I understand this is a book for young readers, I do wish there was a bit more character depth or perhaps mystery. I feel like Ivy is just set up as classic simplistic villian. It's a little frustrating that characters are lacking personality traits beyond nice=good, mean=bad. I personally think even children that would read this understand people are more complex than that.

Hoping that books further in the series give better character development. I'm interested to see where the series is going.

This book was good.👍🏾 It was written by one of my favourite authors and was about a girl called Amara who loves horses and horse riding when she hasn’t done it a lot,there is a stable near her new house that she has moved into and she sees a horse that is black and she is drawn to the black horse and it’s name is Ember and she feels like she has a strong bond with him…

this was my first book introduced to Linda Chapman, safe to say i have a new favorite author. This is a nice book to read in one siting. I liked how a different discipline was used, and i liked the mc i found her relatable.

144 pgs. I enjoyed reading this fantasy-style fiction book about a young girl who wants to work and learn to ride horses from a local stable. She finds herself in the middle of some danger when her horse chooses her and unleashes its powers. Another group is trying to capture her horse to take those powers away and it gets pretty serious. Kids will enjoy this series especially if they like horse stories. Highly recommended for Grades 3-5.
