Crickets & Thunder: Following God to the Ends of the Earth

Rate this book
Crickets and Thunder is about getting to know the invisible God in the big and little things of life. The author traces 40 years of her spiritual journey from the suburbs of Boston to the jungles of New Guinea, and back to the corridors of brain cancer. From rock concerts to the rain forest, whether surrounded by angry tribesmen or pounded by the pain of devastating loss, there is One who walks with us and shares the journey. As the title suggests, He is as near and intimate as our bare feet in the grass; as powerful and mysterious as the thunder in the heavens. As her stories confirm, He can raise the dead or pitch a lightning bolt from a clear blue sky. This is a collection of miracles and inspirational stories about learning to "hold unswervingly to hope... for He who promised is faithful."

This book is memoir of first time writer Karen Low, covering her life from rebellious teenage years to her decades serving as a Christian missionary in the Pacific. I was surprised how strong the writing and story was, especially for a new writer. Published on her own, Crickets & Thunder is riveting and inspiring from beginning to end. Low keeps the pace moving and speaks to the reader as telling you of her amazing life (and it was amazing indeed) while the two of you sit around a fire. She does not hold back nor sugar coat the rough times, but more so exemplifies the miraculous way in which God has worked in her life. If I had any complaint it was probably that with so many characters, it was hard sometimes remembering who someone was when they appeared in the story after a time, but aside from that I was very pleasantly surprised.
