The 1000 Islands

Rate this book
Volume I, 3rd edition. Landscape and aerial images of the Thousand Islands in New York State and Canada. Beautiful pictures. Ian Coristine's love affair with the 1000 Islands began when he discovered the area on a random flight in 1992. It was a life changing event. He became an island owner 3 years later and soon realized that several very unlikely ingredients had converged to provide an unlikely opportunity. Living six months a year in the "assignment" with a float plane, boat, camera and the experience to use them effectively, Coristine realized it was not only an opportunity but perhaps even an obligation to share the "privileged view" that he enjoys low from above. End sheet maps locate all the photo locations. The book can be ordered online at: http://www.1000islandsphotoart.com/Bo...

Ian Coristine's discovery and love affair with the Thousand Islands began during a random flight in 1992. He eventually found an island, literally one in a thousand, with a unique natural harbor, ideal for protecting his plane from marauding storms. During his former career as the Canadian distributor for Challenger ultralight aircraft, Ian learned the craft of air-to-air photography. Finding himself living "in the assignment" with his plane offering a privileged view of an extraordinary place, he began shooting it low from above.

Coristine's first book of photography, "The 1000 Islands," was published in 2002. A second, slightly different edition was published in 2003, followed by a third, again with a few new images in 2004. Now out of print, they have become sought-after collectibles. "Water, Wind and Sky" was published in in 2005, followed by a third book, "The Thousand Islands," in 2006. A booklet, "1000 Islands," was published in 2007, winning a Premier Print Association Benjamin Franklin (Benny) Award in the graphic arts industry's most prestigious worldwide printing competition. His fifth book was published in 2010, "The very best of Ian Coristine's 1000 Islands," was the first to use gloss lamination (a cover process) on every page to add a depth to the images not otherwise attainable. It became his fifth bestseller and his second to receive a Benjamin Franklin Award. Together, his books in print have sold 100,000 copies in local distribution.

Coristine’s images have been featured in magazines around the world as well as in many other books about the region, including Parks Canada’s 125th anniversary tribute, Canada's National Parks, A Celebration. His work has been presented in several one-man exhibitions, at the Brockville Arts Centre in Ontario, and in New York at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, and the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery in Canton.

DxO Labs of Paris, France, award winning publishers of revolutionary camera and lens correction software, selected Coristine from professionals around the world as one of their founding "Image Masters." The City of Brockville, Ontario nominated him for its Tourism Award in recognition of the attention his work has brought the region.

Ian Coristine's sixth book is titled One in a Thousand. Reminiscent of The Olive Farm, A Year in Provence and Under the Tuscan Sun, the memoir was co-written with Donna Walsh Inglehart (Grindstone, Breaking the Ring). One in a Thousand describes the challenges of acquiring Raleigh Island, the restoration of an abandoned cottage, and his adventures in the air and on the water as he immersed himself in a new, unexpected career. Produced by McLellan Interactive Publishing, it includes a 85,000-word text set in a beautiful layout, videos of his flying adventures, nature sounds from the River an interactive map and hundreds of his best images embedded in the text, in galleries and in automated slideshows set to unpublished instrumental tracks from Great Lake Swimmers.

The e-book, available and highly rated in Apple’s iPad App Store, showcases an entirely new form of storytelling.
