Manfred, as my inner German child insists on being called, has spent all day reading the end of Timm Thaler oder Das verkaufte Lachen. Since we share the same body, this means that I've also spent all day reading it. I kept dropping hints that I had work to do, but he pretended not to listen.

"Okay, what did you think?" I ask, when we finally put it down around 10 pm.

"It was amazing!" sighs Manfred, as he simultaneously smirks and wipes a tear from our right eye.

"You think everything's amazing," I say shortly. I'm quite annoyed about losing all that work time. "It's just a YA version of Faust with a happy ending. And the plot twist is pretty silly, you can see it coming a mile off. There's a reason why it's never been translated, you know."

"You didn't get it," says Manfred in his insufferable teen way. "See, the big joke is that you can see right from chapter 2 that Timm has made a pact with the Devil. The author makes sure it couldn't be more obvious. Like, the Baron's name is 'Lefuet', when you read that backwards it's--"

"Yes, yes, yes," I groan. Why do teens always have to believe that adults are dumb?

"And the plot twist isn't silly," Manfred continues. "Like, that's obvious too. Anyone who stops and thinks about it for five minutes can see how Timm is going to be able to get his soul back. But he can't see it."

"So?" I ask.

"Well, isn't life like that?" asks Manfred. "Lots of people have made a pact with the Devil. They think everything is serious and important and they can't laugh any more. And they could get out of it easily, but they can't see the answer, even though it's right in front of them."

"How would you know?" I say uncertainly. I really shouldn't let him get to me like this. Manfred gives a rather affected laugh.

"I'm going to let you think about that," he says, with even more than his usual smugness. "Now post my review. I bet you pick up some votes."

"Teach me to laugh, save my soul" - this book was incredibly popular in the former USSR, I remember that I even had to wait for my turn in the library to read it. And so far I think this is one of the most interesting books written for children. Sadly but it seems the book is almost unknown for modern readers. Strange that there is no movie by this: captivating plot, bright heroes and... happy end :))

I read and reread, and reread the book as a child, for a dozen times. It seemed very grown-up and serious. I'm currently reading it to my kids (8 and 10), and I'm not disappointed. There have been books that I have absolutely adored when growing up, while they have found them boring and bland. Not this one, though. It's a Business 101 course for the kids - with the share-holding companies, bets, and brands, and whatnot. I don't remember ever explaining them as much as with this book. But's it's what makes it worth reading aloud to kids who are supposedly too old for lying in the parents' bed and listening to mom reading. I know the book almost by heart, I know why the slow and difficult chapters are important and how it all unravels in the end with just a clever catch. A great book for young minds if there ever was one.

It's one of the most amazing books that I read when I was a child and then again, as a teenager. It's beautiful, touching, sensitive and captivating, I must have read and re-read it good five times. One of the books that I will never forget and would love to get my hands on and read it again now.

Was soll das denn vermitteln?

I was very surprised by this book. The premise seemed pretty straight-forward, however, I wasn't able to predict any of the turns the story took. Of course by the end Timm gets back his laugh, but he came across many obstacles on the way.
This book offers some commentary on capitalism and globalisation, as well.

My main criticism wold be that most of the book is pretty grim and negative. A lot of bad things happen to the protagonist and his allies, and the reader (and Timm) rarely gets a break or a moment of light-heartedness.
While this is appropriate for the story, the actual reading experience felt exhausting.

Still, Krüss really nailed the ending for this book and it made reading the book worth it.

Well... Book is amazing. I read it 2 times and every time was pearfect. Beautiful. I didn't really read it in german (because I'm not very good in german) but I read it in my native language. I remember how I found this book. I was looking books that I have at home and I found this one. I ask my father is it good, he said it is. So I read it and I was speechless. Book was amazing. That's all I have to say. Bye

Raamat jõudis minuni lapse kohustusliku kirjanduse nimekirjast.

Įtaigiai parašyta, gal kai kuriose vietose kiek pritrūko logikos, bet juk vaikų ir suaugusiųjų logika skiriasi.
