(3-1/2 stars) Published in 1987, this book combines two threads that are often treated separately: the American stage musical and the American movie musical. Mast mostly goes back and forth between the two chronologically, and if a solid thesis never quite rears its head, his observations are smart and entertaining. I emphatically do not like his stylistic quirks, like using "filmmusical" and "Fred&Ginger" as one-word terms. A nice stroll through musical land.
