Set in a very unusual village, this series introduces a new character and a strong theme that children can recognise in each book. If something is missing, and you're feeling blue, you could learn from Hector, who felt this way too.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Kaleidoscopic book tours.

Hector is the first book in D. M. Mullans Curious Tales series and was a great introduction book to this series.
This rhyming picture book is based on Hector who lives alone and is a crazy genius inventor who can create all kinds of weird and wonderful inventions. Hector loves blowing his own trumpet about how amazing and clever he is but realises something is missing. Hector thinks it's another invention after playing Snowball fights with a group of children from the village. Hector then comes to realise he tires of his inventions no matter how wonderful, fun or interesting they are and comes to realise its actually the company of friends he misses.
This is a great book for children. I loved the uniqueness of the colour scheme throughout the book of blue, white and black too!
If the rest of the series is as fun as this book I can't wait to read them all!

Hector Van Groat is a genius, but crazy inventor that lives in an upside down boat on top of Mount High. Hector is a strange little guy without any friends, and he doesn’t want any. After all, who needs friends when you are an inventor. That soon changes when he engages in a snowball fight with the boys and girls from town. Hector then realizes that he has been missing people and friends in his life…people to play with and people to talk to.

Hector is a cute and curious tale of friendship and engagement. Written in rhyme, the story cleverly unfolds to tell the tale of Hector and how he is befriended by the town’s boys and girls.

The illustrations were a little strange, and the character Hector may frighten some youngsters with his big eyes, wild hair, and rantings.

Overall, however, Hector is a cute and fun story that is sure to please both children and their parents. Five adorable stars.

I received a digital copy of the book from Tiny Tree Children’s Books through Love Books Tours. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author, Tiny Tree Books and Kelly Lacey of Love Books Tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

Reminiscent of Hilaire Belloc’s Cautionary Tales for Children or Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, but shorter, more modern and aimed at a younger audience, this first of D.M. Mullan’s Curious Tales is a fun moralistic rhyming romp.

Hector is initially more of a villain than a hero of his own story, as he shrieks and shrills, and lauds his own genius – Babybows (5) solemnly compared him to PJ Masks’ baddie, Romeo, who is also a crazy inventor, while Minishine (8) was reminded of the Grinch.

It only took a page or two, though, for Hector to establish his originality, and for both Minishine and Babybows to observe that his superiority complex was only making him lonely, not happy…

Babybows: He is a bit silly because he keeps on making machines when he should be playing with his friends. I like inventing machines too, like The 1000 [his revolutionary ice-cream-making machine that also fires lasers and can go into space] and The 100 [another amazing rocket machine that spins around and fires lasers AND fire, and also dispenses books for mummy on demand, and has a side-rocket for a monkey companion], but I ALWAYS play with my friends more because it is more fun for them to play with my inventions too!

Minishine: I like how it all rhymes all through the story, and the pictures and inventions were very funny. The words were a little bit sad. I want to know the stories of the other children on the map. Will there be stories for all of the places? I want that girl’s story! [pointing at Blanka von Frock]

There was less gory gruesomeness than the moral tales of yore (which are fine for Babybows, but would give Minishine a fit of the vapors). Both kids LOVED the bit where he stood on his roof in the snow, wearing just a towel – toilet humour and nakedness are the epitome of sophisticated kid humour, apparently!

They also both enjoyed the repetitive refrain, which they could quickly join in with, and the rhyming pattern. The illustrations, too, are engaging for both children and adults, with plenty of details to discuss, including my own favourite aspect – Hector’s spectacularly useless inventions! Plus we all enjoyed having a go at silly voices for Hector’s high-pitched proclamations.

Definitely a great series for bedtime stories – we will be collecting them all – with a simple moral about the importance of friendship that Babybows was able to easily grasp and explain, but enough child-friendly fun to bury the educational lede. We can’t wait to see who will come next!

First off the illustrations are fantastic throughout this book. Kids will love it. I love the fact it sticks to the theme of blue, black and white. There is no deviation from it.
I loved the rhyming that was kept perfectly throughout. It gave the story such a good pace and rhythm.
The story of Hector learning that being amazing and accomplished means nothing without friends to share your life with was lovely. I think children will really relate well to this.
This is a series of stories. As well as Hector Groat who learns about what friendship can do for you, D. M. Mullan has created Gertrude Grunder who learns about how we can all play our part in saving the environment, Otto Stook who is too busy to relax and Blanka Von Frock who needs to learn that we can't always get what we want. These all look like they will be great stories to teach kids in a simplistic but non-patronising way about the world they live in and various people they may encounter through life.

This is a fun little book about friendship and what it means to be a friend. It is very child friendly and easily accessible for the young reader.

Hector is the main character and he is portrayed as a genius that is happy by himself, convinced he needs nobody until something makes him realise there’s more than just having yourself to rely on. He realises he is in need of something - friends and friendship.

The illustrations in this book are superb and the use of the colour blue (only) makes it stand out. There’s humour embedded into the story, along with repetitive phrases that take on a rhythm to it - I think this makes it more engaging for children.

This tale is about the benefits of friends and friendship, told in a fun, child friendly way. I think children will enjoy the humour in this book, alongside the delightful illustrations and rhythmic text. With its repeated refrain of “Hector Van Groat needs No-one but Hector, because he is a genius, a crazy inventor!” children will soon discover, just as Hector did, that life is so much more fun with friends.

Ada and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book together - it’s made us laugh and smile together. Ada pointed out lots of images and discussed them at length with me. It’ll be one that we re-visit lots.

We received this gifted book, in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for gifting us with this little beauty and letting us be a part of the book tour.

Poor sad, lonely bit genius Hector lives all alone, inventing crazy gadgets and keeping himself to himself as he believes he’s far too important!
A chance encounter put a smile on his face, but afterwards, he’s still not quite happy.
A lovely, short, rhyming book perfect for those short bedtime stories with beautiful illustrations to complement the story by @kirsteen_illustrations
Highlighting the importance of not being alone and that having friends makes your life more compete, this book sends a short but accurate message to the children who will be reading it 🥰
There are more of the curious tales books available, all with different characters to meet and enjoy x

Thank you to @lovebookstours for giving me a spot on the tour ☺️

Hector Van Groat is a genius, crazy inventor who lives in an upside down boat. He lives all alone and that’s the way he likes it, shouting “Hector Van Groat needs no one but Hector” from the top of his hill. He spends his days inventing crazy contraptions such as a punching bag that punches you right back! Although each latest invention makes him smile, it’s only brief as actually his workshop is rather lonely. So he goes for a walk where he meets some other children to play with. Then he begins to learn an important lesson about how sometimes we all need someone and that it’s much more fun sharing what you have and playing together.

This is such a lovely written book. The prose rhymes throughout, which is my son’s favourite sort of book. We love a rhyming story as it always flows so nicely when read aloud. The illustrations are also absolutely beautiful. Hector is feeling rather blue and to coincide with this the entire book is illustrated using only white, black and blue drawings.

There are other stories in the Curious Tales series including Gertrude Grunder and Blanka Von Frock that my son is now eager to read next.

🔬 BOOK TOUR & REVIEW 🔬

HECTOR by @dm_mullan_author illustrated by @kirsteen_illustrations

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5⭐️s

Thank you to D. M. Mullan for sending me a #gifted copy of Hector (published by @tinytreebooks) in exchange for an honest review as part of @kellysloveofbooks @lovebookstours Tour.

Raffael and I loved the rhyming of this book from the off.

Hector is a little boy who lives all alone at the top of a mountain in an upside down boat 💙

He tries to bug on a brave face that he is happy that way, making his machines as a self proclaimed genius.

But one day he comes into contact with the children of the village below and something changes.

We loved the illustrations of the book and particularly the fact it was solely blue and white.

Raff is really excited to read about the other children in the series

D.M. Mullan's Curious Tale - Hector by D.M. Mullan & Kirsteen Harris-Jones

I adore children’s books that flow and rhyme they always put a huge smile on my face. You soon meet Hector and learn he’s an inventor. Hector reminded me a bit of the grinch and his lonely ways. The crazy experiments that you meet along the way made me laugh. You start to feel a bit sorry for his lonely ways until he adventures out and embraces some snowball fun. The book is a bit of up and down in terms of emotion but touches on the importance of being creative and having friends.

This book made me laugh so much without giving anything away. You’ll definitely have a laugh reading this with your kids. I definitely want to read the others in this series.

The illustrations are completely different for a children’s book but I loved it. I adored the detail of the compass and the upside down boat. The blue really engaged me. So credits for the illustrator.

I received this book in return for a review as part of Love Books Tours. Thank you to D M Mullan for my free copy.

Firstly I love children's books that rhyme it really just adds something fun to the reading of it.

Hector is as an inventor and lives alone. He invents lots of different things. But one day after a trip to the village and a snowball fight, he starts to discover something is missing from his life.

Hector lives alone and is isolated until another boy from the village suggests Hector moves to town. I think its a good lesson, if someone is alone, see if they are ok or want to play. It's a brilliant little read that would help children to understand friendship, kindness, reaching out and teaching them how people can feel lonely.

I really loved it myself and my little boy has requested it as a bed time story a number of times. The illustrations by Kirsteen Harris-Jones are lovely and the ways it's coloured reminds me of The Dr Suess books.

Highly recommended children's book. Will be checking out others in the series as some of the other characters seem fun.

Hector is one of the Curious Tales by D.M. Mullan. The story follows a young genius inventor named Hector as he grumbles and growls from atop the hill where he lives in an upside down boat. Hector keeps to himself, creating inventions that he soon loses interest in.
One day, on his way to town, he's hit with a snowball and has a fun fight with the other children. But soon, he reverts back to his old, grumpy self when he returns home. Nothing excites him or thrills him anymore.
Hector soon realizes that maybe having some friends to share his inventions with might not be so bad after all.
I thought this was a delightful little story. The illustrations are fun, the rhyming scheme is engaging, and the story itself has a vibe that reminds me of Dr. Seuss meets The Grinch meets Edward Scissorhands meets Willy Wonka. It's quite wonderful, a bit eclectic, and overall just a fun read.

DM Mullian's Curious Tales: Hector
This striking book is a really great tale for children. Hector is a self professed genius, a crazy inventor who needs no-one but Hector.
The story is told in rhyme in a quick pace and this was really easy to keep up with. The rhymes made sense and continued the story (sometimes the rhyming words are only there to make a rhyme but this book was written beautifully). Rich in language and with a really relatable story - we often feel we can manage alone but things usually work better with others and that is what hector finds out.

Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the tour, we've really enjoyed this story and will continue to do so.

This Book is a really fun read, I got vibes of Dr Seuss which I really loved.

We loved the rhyming and the illustrations were great – especially the map at the beginning.  We discussed which of the Houses we would choose to be in; I said the Submarine, Xander wanted Hectors Boat and Zachary the Treehouse!

After we had read the book, Zachary had lots of ideas on what he would do with a snowball machine.  He also suggested that as Hector was an inventor, he could invent snow so that the Town was always covered in snow….! ⛄️

Hectors saying has most definitely stuck in my head - “Hector van Groat needs no-one but Hector, because he is a genius, a crazy inventor!”

I love how it gives off such minimalist impressions given the few colors present. It makes you really focus on the story and it’s surrounding to see how the illustrations were made. This is such an adorable book. The ebook is great but a physical copy will be better for this book. The story line I think it’s important because sometimes as kids grow up they believe they do not need other people. And I think it goes the same for adults. This story gives a great example of it. The example is that with some friends life might be fun and adventurous. And given how we are right now in this current situation it is a great lesson for kids and adults to remember. I love it and enjoy it. Thank you.

This is a beautiful childrens book which will be reread over and over! We loved the simplicity of the blue and white illustrations and it just added to the whole thing for us.

The kids in my house absolutely loved Hector! He is such a cheeky chappy but you are rooting for him from the beginning.

We loved the rhyming of the book, my eldest struggled with this the first time but once I read it with her she was a pro at it 😂

It's a wonderful book about being confident in himself but also about letting people in and being happy 💙

We cannot wait for the rest of the books in the series 🌈

❄My Review: A children's book that rhymes? Yes! Sign me up!!! I love the rhythm of the book! It was a super cute story about Hector and the lesson that we all need someone. I can relate to Hector. He is kind of a loner. He learns that some things are just more fun with friends.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars from me! I recommend this book to all parents. Read this to your kids. They will love it! My grandson loved it!
