Recently retired, Nico moves from Scotland to live in a small French village in the Montagne Noire area, north of Carcassonne. There he finds happiness in a part of the world where indolence is considered a virtue. Although the intention had been that his wife would also spend most of her time there she seems reluctant to leave her roots and her family. This causes Nico no problem whatsoever. What does cause a problem is when she brings her family for a visit. Within a few short days all the hard work Nico has devoted to integrating into the community threatens to be undone. "The Visit" illustrates that, no matter where one goes to discover a little peace, someone always arrives and attempts to spoil the idyll.
