Running is the most popular form of exercise in the world, with the number of people taking part in running events growing massively all the time. From a health point of view this is great news, yet many of those slipping on their running shoes for the first time are less than sure of the best way to get started, while even those who have experience need a little help to take their training to the next level. I'll give this a proper rating once I've run the marathon :D.
I believe a backstory is in order. So, I was watching tv the other day, and the olympics commercial came on, and I felt... inspired! So I went online, googled marathons in Dubai and found out that there is one being held in January! That should give me plenty of time to get my useless frail body into marathon shape! And so, I went to Kinokuniya and grabbed the first running book I found (There were just too many and they all looked the same). And here we are!
The book has training programs for 5k , 10k, half marathons, full marathons and ultradistance. It's very interesting because it has introduced me to ultra distance, which is sooo interesting! like the marathon de sables which is held in Morroco and goes on for a week! and apparantley you have to pay 3,500 dollars just to participate!!! Madness!
Anyways, I will update this in Jan :D. In the meantime I'm going to apply to become a goodreads librarian just so I can add a photo to this book!
Borrowed the Finnish edition from the Helsinki City Library and must say that I liked this book a lot, one of the best guidebooks to running in my view. It's not as humourless nor as trivial as many other recent examples of the genre. Unfortunately, the Finnish edition by Docendo had not been proofread and the translation was a tad clumsy.
Enjoyed especially much the excellent illustrations and the variety and amount of workouts and exercises that support your running.
I will probably not use the detailed training programmes myself (A: I hate gyms; B: I already have good training programmes for 5K and 10K; and C: I have no plans to spend a whole day of my one and only life running a marathon, not to mention an ultra run), but will consult the book for stretching and warm-up excercises.
Not a great book for me as Roberts does not cover some of the basic running techniques but the book is simple, well presented and does cover other areas that many books do not, such as how to check your current fitness level to see what could be improved
