“This story had twists and turns I never could have predicted, and during all of that is a beautiful love story between two broken souls that are in need of healing." - Evelyn Sola, bestselling author Friend Zoned, Downfall and Crave
A plus-sized, billionaire heiress finds herself entangled in a sizzling friends-with-benefits affair with Xavier, a devoted cowboy businessman. Can they navigate the treacherous path to love amidst mysterious happenings and their own emotional walls?
Shayla St. Pierre, yes of those St. Pierres, is thriving. She lives her life on her terms and makes no apologies - not for her plus-size body, philanthropic endeavors, or her zesty love life. When her best friend lands into trouble she does what any friend would, packs a bag, hops on a private plane, and enters a world where the men are bold, badass, and built for sin. When she decides to add one of them to her charcuterie board of lovers, she finds Xavier Alexander wants to be more than a snack. He wants to be the whole damn meal. Not an option. Xavier Alexander grew up in a world where a man’s character meant more than what he did for a living. After the family ranch was lost, Xavier left the land he loved to conquer the business world and take back what was stolen, plus interest. Putting morals first has earned him a goodie-two-shoes reputation, but those who underestimate him do so at their own peril, like Shayla St. Pierre. Her "friends with benefits" proposal is a generous first offer, but his counter sent her running believing he won’t pursue. Let that woman go? Not an option. With a string of unsettling incidents targeting both of them, Shayla must confront her deepest fears while Xavier fights to prove that his love is worth the risk. Chaser, a friends-to-lovers, billionaire, romantic suspense with BBW heroine, is the third interconnected, standalone novel in the Courageous Love Novel series.

“I’d rather burn a thousand times in her arms, than be without her warmth”
A fellow book friend’s review led me to this book and I had no idea it was connected to previous books in a series. I dived right in without a second thought and have zero regrets. There are details from book one that I could have benefitted from having however as you read the dots do connect! It’s one of those series standalone’s that you can potentially read out of order.
This story was A LOT. There were so many moving parts and things happening and while some other readers found this to be a problem, I did not. It was like watching a really good BET+ movie. 🤭
Shayla is Billionaire heiress that is living her best life as a philanthropist and skydiving instructor. She lives life to the fullest and while some in her family may feel that some of her actions are bizarre, they still love and support her regardless. She is fresh out of a relationship that didn’t value her peace and after another strike out she’s is finding it nearly impossible to find a man that is not after her for their own selfish benefit.
Then we have Xavier. A wealthy BD and I do mean big, BDE, ranch owner and horse rider that also dabbles in security and a plethora of other things. He has his eyes set on Shayla however she can’t be sure he’s genuine based off the circumstances of their initial meeting. What started out as a friendship eventually blossoms into something more.
The book was FULL of drama, chaos and secrets! I mean my head was spinning but in a good way.
🥃 It was Xavier using Shayla’s panties as the “olive” in his martini for me! 🐎 It was the upside down refrigerator action for me 😈🥵 💵 It was Xavier taking interest in Shayla and the full court pressure he put towards making her his for me.
This was a NTMA and chyyyyy I will most certainly be digging into her catalog again!!
I read this book off of a recommendation from TikTok and honestly it started off really nice. I could really vibe with the characters. Xavier did creep me out a little bit because he kind of entered in on stalker vibes, but I grew to appreciate him, and like his character, however the book gets a 2/2.5 out of me because there were random action scenes that really didn’t offer any context on like how we got there, why are we worried, who are these people and it was really confusing. Then we’d hop back into a love story, and then the next three chapters will be an action sequence that nobody knew was coming.
Whew! Such a beautiful, sweet, and therapeutic story packed with drama and action. Again, the author writes in a way that reading is similar to watching your favorite limited series (soundtrack included!). Reading along with the playlist heightens the experience of reading this work of art. Shayla is me, I am her, and I just loved how she fought to overcome her past while healing and becoming her authentic self. Xavier is THAT GUY. Shayla’s cowboy is gentle, caring, and attentive. Just what she needs. Someone who truly sees her and doesn’t want to change her. She’s his chaser. And he doesn’t mind chasing her. Yes, we get to see Mike, Maya, and the whole Rough Ridge crew (and some new additions), and get a glimpse into life during and after the aftermath of all the drama and fallout of Heartbeat. Now it did get a bit chaotic and confusing during the last 25% of the book. What a ride! 🐎
So this book was a 3.5 for me. I loved Xavier a lot Shayla was a hit and miss. I also felt that the book was random af like a lot of the time I was confused on what was going on or who the sections were referencing. I think the author was trying to put a lot into the story but nothing was connecting. The spicy scene were great though Cavier can put it downnnnn. If I wasn’t so confused throughout the book I would’ve definitely rated this a 4.5 instead.
Although I loved all of these characters in HEARTBEAT, to me, with the exception of Xavier, in this story, all the rest fell flat. Even crazy Uncle Gus' motives were never fully explained. Sorry!
Fat Rep- she is confident in her body and it’s fat positive. There are some fatphobic comments made to her by others but she really doesn’t let it impact her.
The first 100 pages of this book had me laughing legit out loud and I was so invested. I love love love an unapologetic FMC who is fierce, strong and confident in herself and Shay is all of that. Xavier is sexy and dominant but also kind and sweet and I loved them as a couple.
After the first 100 pages I feel like some of the plot started to get choppy and it wasn’t a cohesive storyline that made sense. I was very confused on who, what, where and not in this is twisty and I’m at the edge of my seat kind of way but more of a oh this is super confusing and I’m lost way. The relationship dynamics went a little wonky for me at this point and it just started to fall apart as a storyline.
I still had moments with this couple and that scene in the bar where he rips her underwear off and puts it in his drink! Omg! 🫠 I was a 🥵 and blushing 😊 and damn!
I loved the ever-loving-freak out of this book. Xavier and Shayla are main character royalty because they are both book boos!! The pain and subsequent healing in this book was amazing. The subplots were a little chaotic but so good and I swear I at one point I wanted this to me why choose so I could love on Bishop and Nelson to, but at times it was hard keeping everyone straight so I can’t remember if he has someone. Anyways I am so glad I finally read this because I was headed for a slump and now I’m floating. Great writing, good pacing, exceptional characters. 8/10
Xavier & Shayla bring the heat. What is a lady to do when you want to throw caution to turn wind & just be free? Why you try to run away from love of course. However Xavier is playing for keeps & brings in his long game starting as friends not just a play for sexual satisfaction & attraction. There is intrigue & messiness. Black cowboys over here. There are discussions of generational wealth & giving back too those who need help. Loved it. This was a awesome read. And when Xavier finally is able to unite with Shayla the fire between them burns hot. Warning the sexual encounters burn triple hot. Absolutely amazing. The plot took me for a wild ride, twists I wasn’t expecting, but ultimately ended with the HEA. The spice was having me leave a snail trail it was so good. I absolutely love Shayla and Xavier and can’t wait to read more from Terreece!
Shay knows what she wants and handles her own to get it. X is a perfect match for her, he didn’t take no for an answer and it worked in his favor. Grant was batshit crazy lmao. It’s always refreshing when all the male characters don’t play about their love. I really liked how the story unfolded.

The love story was great, 5 stars for that. Xavier's sex game was not boring. His chaser! And he says things like: “You are not prey to be hunted. You, Sweetness, are a deity. A goddess who would have me, a mere man, as your loyal priest. If I were to taste you, imbibe you, I would forsake everything to feverishly worship at your feet, living for the next moment with you. My thoughts? Consumed by you. My dick? Blessed by your touch until I was nothing more than one of your many followers lighting incense in prayer. You would ruin me… with one . So, as much as I would love to set up an altar to that ass, self-preservation dictates I decline your offer.”
But I was constantly saying, "Wait, I'm confused." Things would jump ahead, then go back, all in the same event. And there was event, after event, after event. A good half of them could have been eliminated without negatively impacting the story. But I kept reading because I had to see what was going to happen, so...
I personally have a hard time reading books that are in 3rd person. However this was so well written I almost forgot it was. I love stories that have drama, laughter, romance, fun, and a few tears, I want it all and Chaser delivered. I went through all the feels with this one and now this author has a fan for life. I would definitely recommend reading this book. And I would love to see her work on screen, this was definitely a movie in written form.
I’m not really sure what I read. There were so many typos, and insignificant story lines that were rushed at the end and random plot points were thrown in for no reason. I enjoyed the first 100 pages and don’t know wtf happened after that.
This book is the reason I bought the whole series because he calls her sweetness in it. Had to have it. Xavier and Shayla. Shayla is one of Mayas best friends who we had been introduced to and Xavier is a part of rough ridge but he also did well off for himself and has money. His jet had been used for Maya when she needed to get to and from griffin. Shayla leaves her ex Grant. He ends back up in her house and she thinks it’s a fluke. Xavier ends up in town and they end up spending time together. She shows him that she jumps out of planes and he falls in love with the high too. Shayla keeps trying to push him away and tell him she’s not what he needs. Their sex is hot and spicy and I love it. We get to see parts of Mayas rescue through Shayla’s eyes. Which the one thing I will say is I think Terrence is really bad at making time frames line up because I’m pretty sure this story took place AFTER Maya and mikes ordeal and that’s how Shayla met Xavier but then the ordeal happened during this. So Terrence needs to work on her story lines. That’s my one big complaint is her books can be confusing and her time frames don’t line up. Maya was being chased by clowns and all this crazy shit was happening. Xavier’s dad had been missing. Moral of the story. Xavier’s uncle had been behind all this crazy shit. He was paying people to act as clowns and claiming he did all this to get their families land back and had held their dad hostage. Shayla had figured it all out. The boys mom, Alma, kills their uncle and they burn the kiln down where his body was. Xavier and Shayla end up together in the end. Happy and hunky dory. I believe the next book is going to been Selene and Logan who is the wolf but I could be wrong. We sorta found out things about Selene in this book like she sees things? And her hair and eye color changed and like she was running from something. Oh also Shayla’s ex Grant had ended up running in the sex trafficking circles and had sold her and then was spying on her through the walls of her house and also working with Uncle Gus. Crazy shit but it all worked out in the end. Enjoyed the story but she needs to work on making the time frames and transitions make more sense. The book is called chaser because Xavier says she’s his chaser and if he’s going to have bourbon he needs her as his chaser and he does some hot examples of this.

What is a fartoosy? You’ve got to read the book to find out, and ohh when you do make sure you have some tissue for the tears! So Shayla is the plus size and curvy best friend of Maya, from book one, and she is all about living life on her terms but also not embarrassing her high society family. It’s a constant balancing act - being the ideal daughter, best aunt, loving sister and still being true to herself. She made some mistakes in her past to the disappointment and embarrassment of her family and she is doing all that she can to never allow it to happen again. She’s extremely successful in her own right and doesn’t need any financial help. She’s also a man eater with a line of past conquests and ex’s. One ex in particular won’t let her be great. Xavier is a successful businessman who runs his families business and ranch and his own businesses. He is the cousin to Caine, from book 1. He is well mannered, giving and has a great heart. He’s no slouch in the money department. He’s also a cowboy through and through. His family experienced a great loss and he is determined to get all of the families land back despite his guilt. These two meet in the midst of Maya’s ordeal and she shoot’s his shot down hard. She isn’t looking to start anything that could turn permanent - which really means she has issues with love and trust after being burned and she doesn’t want to open herself up to love and potential heartbreak again. But the cowboy won’t be denied. The chemistry between these two is combustible! He sees her as a goddess who he wants to worship, love, protect and adore. She sees him as the man who could make her walls come tumbling down no matter what she does to keep them up. Hot and heavy, wild, high flying, and more with these two.
2.5 rounded up. There's a lot to like in this. It was a fun and wild ride. Shayla is definitely one of my favorite leads in a contemporary romance- strong willed, fun, sexually free. Xavier was sexy, but I don't particularly love the possessive trope. Additionally, his need to vent his frustrations and feelings through violence (starting fights, throwing objects at walls) really gave me the ick. There is a lot of heart and passion in this story.
Some of my least favorite things: -First third of the book was really well plotted and lots of building. Then the last two-thirds, I kept flipping back to the previous page to see if I had missed things. (Other reviews mention this too.) There were some things that just happened with no explanation on page and you kind of have to piece it together from what's happening in the background. New characters cropped up that I was sure we hadn't seen before. There is some kind of violence that happens that is at first called an accident and than later an attack. - The pacing of the last one third of the book is mind blowing fast. First third of the book takes place over a couple of weeks. Last third, you get entire four-page chapters that cover weeks at a time. - Before the book events, X's Dad supposedly just disappeared one night and they have him declared dead, then its a heart attack, then he was fishing, and then a different story entirely- there's about four different ways that X's Dad has died off screen and they do not reconcile it. - My print copy of the book needs a copy editor. There were some genuine typos and then littered throughout the entire book were footnote numbers that were accidentally left from some version of editing.
Shayla and Xavier have had a sizzling connection since they first met. Despite that, Shayla wants to keep Xavier in the friend zone because of their mutual friends and his history with her best friend. They get to know each other, become closer and closer, and eventually it leads to them becoming more than friends. Shayla denies that she is falling for Xavier but he doesn’t want to give up on her. Dangerous circumstances arise and they have to fight to survive while trying to navigate their way to finding happiness with one another.
This book started off with the feel of a friends-to-lovers story for the first half. I love the fiery chemistry that Shayla and Xavier had and that they exploded into something hot when they finally gave into their attraction to one another. The steamy scenes in this book were HOT!
The second half of the book had more of a romantic suspense feel to it. I ate up the crazy drama and I was reading so fast because I needed to know how the story would turn out. Just when I thought things were slowing down, we had another turn of events and it was exciting!
Terreece M. Clarke writes stories with angst and all the human emotions so well. The characters had raw emotions and did and said things to each other that was hurtful. But that’s real life, isn’t it? They each had their journey in figuring out how to move on from harming one another and I thought that was unique about this book.
The HEA of this book was special! I was grinning from ear to ear because it was so clever and cute!
Steam level: 🔥🔥🔥1/2
⚠️: breaking and entering, stalking, kidnapping, gun violence, murder, mention of sex trafficking
I am head over heels in love with Xavier. That man can do no wrong and he's oozing charm, charisma, and elegance. He can get down and dirty with the most savage. Chaser is filled with humour, witty banter and some suspense toward the end. This book has a plus-size billionaire heroine who has been very unlucky with men. She is determined to make a name for herself, separate from the infamous St. Pierre family. Shyla was burnt multiple times and doesn't want to open up herself to get hurt again.
Xavier is a businessman and a cowboy at heart. After his father lost the family lands, Xavier is determined to buy it back. However, a close family member has a different goal which doesn't align with what Xavier is working toward.
I like Xavier's smooth talking. That man is blessed with words of seduction. Both Xavier and Shyla will do anything for their friends and family. They as selfless, altruistic and compassionate. OMG, Chaser is interconnected with other books in the A Courageous Love Novel. I loved that we got more of Maya, Mike and the rest of the crew from Heartbeat.
I enjoyed that Xavier and Shyla became friends before they got intimate.
I was excited to read more about Shyla but her personality is not for everyone's taste palette. She can be stand-offish, indifferent, harsh and unpleasant.
The suspense picked up around 70% into the book and I wish I got suspense earlier in the book.
🥃ARC Book Review: Chaser by Terreece M. Clarke @terreece🥃
Rating: 4/5 🌟
And You Can Be My Cowgirl...
“Chaser” by Terreece M. Clarke is Book 3 of The Courageous Love Series, a standalone and interconnected romantic suspense story within the same universe. Readers will recognize characters from Book 1 and 2. Please read TW/CWs.
Shayla (FMC) is portrayed as a plus-sized, wealthy, independent, confident woman who can handle herself well. She had me cracking up throughout this story. There were several moments of secondhand embarrassment, so be prepared! I love how her friends Selene and Maya are direct and so honest with her. That’s true friendship.
Xavier (MMC) is a cowboy that can do no wrong in my world and is the perfect match for Shayla. This man is everything. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. He is strong, funny, and fine, defends Shayla, falls first, speaks fluent French, and, most importantly, loves Shayla just as she is. I understand why author Terreece Clarke titled the story “Chaser” -- oh my. Readers are guaranteed plenty of steamy scenes. And don’t forget the Spotify Playlist. It is 🔥
“Chaser” was an entertaining and spicy read. The book’s “romantic suspense” storyline took a little while to get going, but it was pretty emotional once it did.
I received an advanced review copy for free and leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you @terreece #ChaserNovel #TerreeceMClarke
I really wanted to give this book a 4 or 3. It started out really well and even after things went downhill there were still really beautiful moments and I love how the author describes Xavier and Shayla’s love and their emotions, boundaries and journey to each other. At first I liked the fast paced nature of the book and the quick changes and cut scenes fit but they soon became confusing and hard to follow. Im also all for suspending my disbelief and getting into a seemingly out there plot but I also think you need to set that foundation from the beginning. Towards the end of the book things felt almost comedically action packed but it didn’t feel true to the story. I could understand to a certain degree on Xavier side the action and fighting etc but a lot of things about Shayla and her skills were just randomly mentioned when it felt convenient or when we needed support for her sudden actions and abilities. Again there are some amazing quotes in this book and I enjoyed the playlist that went along with the chapters but about 60% in I felt a little taken out of the story because of the slight absurdity and the fast pace and skipped scenes that often weren’t explained enough.
XAVIER LAMONT TOUSSAINT ALEXANDER. SHAYLA ST. PIERRE.
I am screaming their names from the rooftop because SHAYLA is everything and more. I loved this book so much because I was able to see so much of myself in Shayla. I am not a rich Black woman, but I am a Black woman who suffers from PCOS and migraines and some of the same bafoonery she went through. What I love about Shayla is how real and raw her character is. She doesn’t hold back and when she allows herself to feel things and not compartmentalize, you feel her feeling in your soul. She’s a woman who has to fight through the same insecurities we all do, while trying to save fave for a family that she loves with her whole heart.
Now, Xavier, theeee cowboy, Alexander. He is literally what book boyfriends are made of. He is patient, thoughtful, sweet, kind, loving, and exuding Xaddy vibes.
If you are looking for a slow burn romance with a shot of a thrill and an emotional rollercoaster as a Chaser 😉 then this is the book for you. 🧡

There was nothing in this story I didn't love and like. Shayla reminded me of myself, I too was plus size 18 for years. I was confident and taking names like Shayla but taking no prisoners. I give my sheros a voice of someone I know and Shayla's voice kept switching between Regina King, I heard her voice the majority of the time, and Niecy Nash, that's never happened before. I loved Shayla's if you snooze you lose work ethic. She's a BAB for sure, Bad Ass Boss.
I loved the historical elements of the book, her home and I'd never heard of an in ground blanking blank(no spoiler alerts from me) before, it may not be historical but it was interesting that its big enough for a human to stand in.
The twist and turns of this book will have sitting up in bed at 4:00 am. The end was too much and I think the author compounded the anxs the way she wrote it.
I will read this author again she's an excellent story teller, she didn't over burden me with a sex seen every other page. Thank you for that.
The book was definitely engaging and has interesting plot however I feel like there’s so many answers I didn’t get! This is the first book I’ve read of this author’s but like what happened to Maya?? None of that is truly addressed and maybe I needed to read her book first to understand but this book is presented as a stand-alone so I should have enough answers to know what’s going on at one of the climatic points of the book. Also what was up with Selene?? We never got answers for that either. There’s really good plot here but there’s A LOT of points that could’ve been developed more for the reader’s understanding. I did appreciate X’s and Shay’s relationship but there are times where that took a far back burner plot. I really enjoyed the jump in perspectives but again details got lost that could’ve been solved if there an indication on whose perspective it was. There’s so much potential with this story and I really want to rate it higher but there’s some significant issues I had with the plot development.
It’s more closer to a 4.75 but honestly this was everything I wanted in a cowboy romance. There are not a lot of black cowboy romances (at least that I’ve seen) and when I found this, I almost didn’t read it. I’m so glad I gave it another chance because this was fireeeee. I loved that she was plus sized and still a baddie and was rich and desired. I loved how obsessed he was with her and how he was always thinking about ways to make he comfortable. I loved that their dynamic was different than what I’ve read before. Normally the guy is more richer and has all this power to the point of it being an unbalanced power dynamic but not this book. She didn’t need him financially and they found love because they enjoyed each others company and I loved that. I highly recommend if you want a book that gives Hallmark, Lifetime and heartland vibes but make it black!!!! I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I might have to go back and read the first one to hold me over until the next book lol 🤗
The first like 100 or o pages of this book were great I loved the relationship between X and Shay. The sex scenes were so hot. He’s a dominant but sweet cowboy she’s a hot head who needed someone who saw her and accepted her which he did. Now I already don’t usually read third person pov books but this was well written and I could enjoy it even so. I give it 2 starts because so many new climaxes kept happening with no elaboration or connection to what I’d read so far. I’m assuming it’s supposed to be a, read the drama now then go back and explain in further chapters, kind of thing but I couldn’t do it. I DNF it at 76% because more plot twists kept happening without closing the previous ones out. And if I had to get to the very last chapter for it to make sense I’d still be pissed and would’ve hated the whole experience of reading the book. I had SUCH high hopes and Im a bit disappointed.
This is the second book I’ve read in this series, and I believe Clarke’s voice is getting stronger. Shayla and Xavier are a beautiful couple who both dealt w hurt in the past. To read them work through those hurts to get to each other was a pleasure. Shayla was too cautious and always ready to run, while Xavier jumped in too soon for her comfort. I loved the way they talked to each other about their feelings and the way they would give each other space. It’s really a sweet story with just enough suspense to keep me interested.
The only reason I didn’t give five ⭐️s is because the few chapters of the climax when they figured out who was behind everything and Xavier got hurt were a little bit confusing on the details. Maybe it was the jumping of POVs but I’m not sure.
I absolutely loved this book. The journey from hurt to healed we took with Shayla was amazing to watch. The way Xavier loved her before he ever knew what he was doing is the kind of thing you want to write home about . Pairing a billionaire heiress with a rich cowboy that still held on the his upbringing and roots was swoon worthy . They mixed so well and I loved watching them fall. There was no poor girl rich man savior dynamic and it was refreshing . The author weaves a beautiful story and the fact that there was still conflict and suspense in the most of it all was absolutely perfect . Move over Mike and Maya I just fell in love with Shayla and Xavier.
I am loving this series. These books are amazing and they bring the emotions out of you. The writer has expertly weaved an amazing story that pulls you in from the first page. I won’t give any spoilers out this time. I’m trying to get better about doing that. I will just say that their love story was sweet. You really felt Shay and what she was going through. I still can’t get over one of the first lines of the story where she said that her ex sat his open BUTT on her white couch. I guffawed! Not his open butt lol! Anyway read the book. You’ll love it. Xavier and Shay had my whole heart. See y’all next time.
Ok Shayla and Xavier had a lot going on but honey the Cowboys in these books know how to love on a woman...it may be so much love that sometimes it may boil over but it's love all the same.
Broody, strong, family oriented Xavier, riding through life trying to conquer his past traumas and fierce, strong, ambitious Shayla running on prayers trying to take care of everyone around her. I'm saying, read Heartbeat and then read this one so you aren't trying to figure out who the characters are.
I enjoyed this story so much and seeing all the drama unfold just added another layer to love.
There was A LOT going on in this story and it was all over the place. A lot of characters, grief, mystery, romance, community, family drama, environmental awareness, careers, redemption, sabotage, abduction, sex trafficking, skydiving, plane crashes, murder, just so much. These two MCs are ex crashouts but we didn’t get to experience it, just read about their past mistakes. A very polite, nasty cowboy! Shayla kind of annoyed me. He gave her what she needed and she still pushed him away.
This didn’t feel like an interconnected standalone. Definitely felt like I needed to read SEVERAL other books before this. A few editing issues.
