A delightful short story in the Candy-Coated Mystery series by Nancy Coco! Allie’s friend, Carol Tunison, takes the lead in the murder solving this time, and fear doesn’t seem to be a factor for her. Along with the senior book club members, Carol endures threats to her life in order to solve the whodunnit before Christmas. Allie McMurphy, the regular protagonist appears briefly in this novella. Great characters, great mystery!

I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own.

A senior center break-in turns deadly and the seniors "book club" is once again studying clues in order to track down a killer.

This novella is told from the perspective of Carol Tunisian. Carol is an active member of the senior citizen group that often helps Allie, the main protagonist, in the other books in the Candy-Coated Mystery series. It is a quick read set on Mackinaw Island that keeps the clues flowing until the very end.

Thanks to Kensington Cozies and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.

I received a free copy of, Having a Fudgy Christmas Time, by Nancy Coco, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is part of The Candy Coated Mystery series. Its Christmas time in Mackinac Island and Carol is working on the Senior Center Christmas Ball, when she finds a dead body, and has a mystery to solve. A delightful cozy mystery short and sweet.

I’m not a fan of novellas as they are too short to get really invested in and don’t really do anything to move a series along but I read them because I like to read them because FOMO. This was cute. I liked getting to see things from Mrs. Tunisian’s point of view, who has been featured more in the series lately. I also enjoyed getting to know more of the seniors on the island. The mystery was good and the ending was not what I expected. This was a good story to fill the gap before a new regular length one is released.

I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.

It’s Christmas time on beautiful and chilly Mackinac Island. Carol Tunisian is helping to prepare the Christmas Ball in support of the Senior Center when she stumbles across a body. Having helped her friend, Allie, solve some murders in the past, she’s pretty sure that she can handle this one with the help of a few of her friends. The question is whether she can solve it before anyone else is murdered.

This is a short Christmas story for fans of the Allie McMurphy Candy-Coated mystery series.

I had 3 concerns before starting.

1. I had never read any of the Allie McMurphy Candy-Coated series.

2. I don’t generally like short mysteries because there isn’t enough time to develop characters or plot.

3. I have unreasonably high standards for Christmas mysteries. They are all I read between November 1 and January 6, and I want them to be as packed full of holiday spirit as a book about a murder can possibly be.

So let’s take my concerns in order.

1. I don’t know why I hadn’t read any of this series before. (How did a series on a small island where fudge is a major industry escape me!?) It didn’t make a difference to this story. I immediately caught on to who everyone was and what was happening. And I have now added this series to my wishlist.

2. This was a great short story! The characters were well-developed and very likable. As a mystery, I admit it wasn’t really one that I could solve alongside Carol and her friends. Normally that makes me mad, but it didn’t here. I felt like I was going along for an adventure with Carol. There was humor and just enough suspense and, ultimately, she helped solve the murder. I was perfectly content with this mystery.

3. There were definitely adequate holiday related activities to meet my high Christmas book standards (even though I read it when it was 90 degrees outside). There was so much snow! Police arriving on snowmobiles kind of snow. Carol’s home was decorated for Christmas. There were fires in the fireplace. There were Christmas cookies which Carol served to guests and took in tins to soften up those she planned to question. I would have loved more details about Carol’s Santas from Around the World collection and the Christmas Ball, but, after all, it was a short story. I’d give it a 4/5 for the Christmas theme.

The Characters

Carol’s a woman in her 70s with no children and a retired husband who is away on a fishing trip. She is brave, intelligent, resourceful, quick thinking, proactive, and a wee bit devious - though she would probably prefer the word sneaky. Her leadership qualities and organizational skills impressed me. This is a woman who is dedicated to her friends, her community, and helping those in need. Her detective skills could use a bit of work, but given it’s the first one she’s tried to solve as head amateur detective rather than as assistant to head amateur detective, I’d say she did an excellent job. She had a very authentic voice and I adored her by the end of the first chapter. Great character!

The other characters were equally fun. Too many authors might just present us with a room of elderly people, but here we found a quintessential grandmotherly type, a hippie, a Polish Santa and more. These weren’t just “old people” but people with independent personalities.

What Else I Liked
A couple of recipes are dotted throughout the story - easy chocolate cheesecake bars and easy maple fudge. I plan to try both.

Her “little book club” liked to help solve mysteries. I’d join that book club.

I received a free eArc of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

#HavingaFudgyChristmasTime #NetGalley is told through the point of view of Carol, A friend of Allie and her staff. Carol becomes involved in a murder investigation and she uses the tips and advice from Allie, who has found herself in this position several times. Carol had me laughing and her friends added color to the story. It was a fun twist on this already fantastic book. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book. I'm always happy to recommend this series to other people.

Carol Tunisian is looking forward to putting the finishing touches on the Senior Center Christmas Ball. However, when she arrives at the center, she finds the door has been jimmied and a dead body inside. The victim is a local, so why has he been sleeping at the center at night? Carol rallies her group of silver-haired sleuths to solve the murder.

This was a fun, cozy Christmas novella. The characters are intriguing, realistic, and humorous. It was nice getting to know more about the seniors on the island. Even though the story was short, it was well-plotted and moved at a good pace.

All thoughts and opinions are my own; in no way has anyone influenced my opinion.

3.5 Stars: I really enjoy the Candy-Coated Mystery series, but have gotten a bit behind. In this Christmas novella, protagonist Allie McMurphy's sleuthing partner Carol Tunisian is front and center solving this holiday homicide. Carol and her team are getting the Senior Center ready for the Senior Christmas Ball. When they head over to do some clean up they find that the center looks like it was broken into and they find a local resident dead inside. It seems like he had been living there and we learn more about that as the story progresses. Officer Rex Manning tells Carol not to involve her book club in solving the mystery, but Carol doesn't listen well. Rallying her troop of silver-haired sleuths—and with some support from Ally, Carol sets out to discover who the killer is and why.

This is a novella that was just long enough to solve this mystery. I liked that Carol was the main sleuth in this one, giving Allie a break. It was interesting to see how technology was used to solve this case, as well as recruiting younger people to help out. Allie was still around and gave Carol some suggestions, which helped solve the crime. There was some danger to Carol when others found out she was poking her nose into the crime, but she is a smart cookie and managed to save herself. The crime wasn't too difficult to solve, and Carol and her friends did a great job figuring this one out. A great story for Christmas and while waiting for the next full length book to come out.

Having A Fudgy Christmas Time is the third novella(book 11.5) in the A Candy Coated Mystery series by Nancy Coco. As with the two previous novellas, a supporting cast member is brought to the forefront to solve the mystery.

Carol Tunisian is on her way to meet other ladies to finish planning the upcoming Christmas Ball to raise funds for the Senior Center. Arriving at the center, she finds the front door ajar and a body lying on the floor. Carol immediately calls the police, and when police chief Rex Manning arrives, the body is quickly identified as Martin Oxford. Two questions need to be asked: who murdered Oxford and what was he doing back in town, as he always winters in Texas? It’s time for Carol to organize the members of the senior book club and begin to search for the killer.

The story is well-plotted and moves at a quick pace. It was delightful to have a story told from the supporting characters' view. The ladies are very determined and quite humorous.

There are delicious-sounding recipes included in the book.

Read if you like:
🍫 culinary cozy mysteries 🩷🩷
🍫 small town vibes
🍫 old people solving mysteries
🍫 quirky small-town characters

I have loved every other book I have read in the Fudgy series, so just as expected I also very much enjoyed this one.
I love Carol! I love the whole “old people solving mysteries” trope! I really don’t know what it is I love about it but I just automatically love the character when it’s a sweet old person 🤪
I really enjoy the fact that it takes place on Mackinac island. I was obsessed with all the small town scenery/events described in the book and I really felt like I was living on a beautiful small town island. It was a very lovely escapist book.
The only thing I dislike about cozy mysteries is that they make me hungry while I’m reading 😭🤪
I really appreciated the writing style: it was simple and easy to follow so I didn’t some out while reading some complicated word jargon.
One thing that makes these Fudgy books so great and different from others is that the murder happens within the very first few pages. It’s literally impossible for me to not be sucked in immediately when the drama happens right at the beginning. I just couldn’t put it down after that!
I love love loveeeee when cozy mysteries have recipes in between the chapters!! It just feels like the author put all this extra work into making a truly enjoyable reading experience 🩷
A truly delightful reading experience! I really enjoyed reading this cozy mystery, and I can’t wait for many more Fudgy books in the future 💕

Fun short story but was a little confused because on of the ladies who helped solve the crime was the killer in the story I previously read. She should still be in jail. Other than that, it was very enjoyable!

“ Having a Fudgy Christmas Time“ a novella in the Candy-Coated Mystery series by Nancy Coco. I really love this series and visiting Mackinac Island! TIS THE SEASON FOR FUDGE—AND SLEUTHING

I found myself engrossed in the story as the mystery is interesting and well plotted. This time we are seeing the mystery from Carol Tunisian’s point of view which at first I had trouble with but then I got use to it.

I kept guessing and second-guessing myself on whodunnit right to the very end.

I recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends and can’t wait for the next instalment “Three Fudges and a Baby” to come out!

I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Kensington Books and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this cozy. Carol is off to the senior center to finish planning the Christmas ball. When she gets there she finds the ajar and a dead man on the floor. She calls Rex to come . He tells her to wait outside. Once the police are there other people start gathering. The victim is a local senior and no one can figure out why he is sleeping in the center. As always, Rex tells Carol not to get her Senior book club involved in the investigation. Does she listen?. Find out who it is , how it happened

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of HAVING A FUDGY CHRISTMAS TIME (Book 11.5 of the Candy-Coated Mysteries) by Nancy Coco in exchange for an honest review. This story is told from Carol’s viewpoint. Carol is part of the committee planning the Mackinac Island Senior Center Christmas Ball. However, the committee’s plans for using the Senior Center as a venue seem to be foiled when a member of the community is found murdered in the building. Carol and her friends who share a similar interest in mystery-solving are soon sleuthing around town. In so doing, more than one senior is endangered.

"Oh Carol... what have you gotten yourself into this time?"

This is the first of the Candy Coated Mysteries that I have read so I am being introduced to Nancy Coco's series in this novella. Allie's elderly sleuthing friend, Carol Tunisian, is front and center of this story. She is quite the character. She stumbles upon a dead body when she discovers that the senior center on Mackinac Island has been broken into. Shocked at finding this long-time resident who was believed to be in another state, she intends to learn why he was back in town. Seniors led by Carol get involved in their own investigation of the break in and murder.
This is a quick read for a Christmas mystery involving characters of the series. I enjoyed the story that is viewed through Carol's actions and thoughts. I have to say it shows that someone in her 70's can have the intelligence, energy and ability to solve a mystery too. The victim has a sad and special story in this.
I received an advanced reader's copy of the novella from the author and publisher through NetGalley and this is my own unsolicited opinion about it. An intriguing excerpt from the next book in the series featuring Allie is at the end of the book. I look forward to that read.

A cute festive novella set in the Candy Coated Mystery world. This one is centered around Allie’s sleuthing friend, Carol Tunisian. After she finds a dead man at the senior center, Carol sets out to find the culprit.

An easy, fun read! I think we could’ve gotten a bit more wrap up but overall it was a fun novella. And there were still a few recipes just like the full novels!

When Carol Tunisian goes to open the senior center to finalize plans for the Christmas ball, she's shocked to discover the doors have been jimmied open and a man in lying face down on the floor. After checking for a pulse, Carol determines the man is dead. When Rex and the police arrive, Carol gives them a clue to the man's identity and his ID confirms it. Why was Martin Oxford at the senior center? How did he get in? Who killed him and why? Carol and her "Book Club" and the other seniors set out to solve the mystery.

This mystery kept me up late. I didn't know what was going on and just when I was going to put the book down at the halfway mark, something happened and I had to keep going. The reveal was a little bit of a let down. It's summarized after the fact. Carol figured it out but only with help. Rex would have gotten there too, he was a half step behind. I speed read this for the recipes but there are only two "easy" recipes and using premade croissant dough doesn't appeal to me. I caught one typo on p. 38 "champaign" instead of "champagne". Don't these authors have spell check? This one was long for a novella and without Mal, less charming. There wasn't a whole lot of Mackinac Island cozy either. It takes place at Christmastime but other than a few mentions, the islanders aren't making Christmas cheer quite yet.

Mrs. Tunisian is not my favorite character. She's a nosy old lady who wants to be Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher. Just because she's top dog at the senior center doesn't give her qualifications to investigate murders. She got into trouble last time when she helped Allie and hasn't learned her lesson. This time she or one of her friends could get hurt- or worse- killed. I did like meeting Carol's often and still absent husband and getting to know them as a couple. Barry is sweet and devoted to Carol. She loves him too and doesn't mind his frequent absences because he's retired and when he's home, he's under foot all day. There was no reason for Carol to investigate this mystery and she should have left it to Rex and the pros. She consults Allie and Jenn, which could put pregnant Jenn in danger! Carol does a lot of silly and reckless things in this novella in pursuit of her investigation. I hope she has learned her lesson and gives up sleuthing.

Her friends are a little more grounded. Irma seems the most eager to investigate, as always but Emma Smallbird is dead set against it. She's focused on what's important- feeding the seniors and when that's taken care of, she's uninterested in any more involvement in the drama. Carol may not see Betty as too bright but it's Betty who provides the solid lead. Carol should be less judgmental. James Lawson, a grouchy techie senior, also provides some serious help in the investigation. Without them, Carol never would have figured out anything. She has to lie and manipulate people to get her answers though and that I don't approve of. Missy has a good idea to flush out the killer- which these senior civilians absolutely should NOT be doing! Missy is a little crusty but she gets caught up in sleuthing too. I think she may be a little jealous of her neighbor and friend being Miss Marple and gets caught up in the mystery without thinking things through.

Eli sounds like the male version of Carol. They seem to be in competition for nosiest senior amateur sleuth. They could have been seriously hurt - by each other - in the course of their investigation. AY AY AY! Yet Carol suspects Eli knows more than he's sharing. What clue did he pick up on that she doesn't know? I think that bugs her big time. I trust Eli will go to the police if he figures it out. I hope anyway. Jenn, as a responsible adult and soon to be mother, should NOT have involved her niece. Emily seems like a nice girl but she could have gotten killed if anyone discovered she provided a vital clue.

Rex is less macho and more likable with Mrs. Tunisian. He's doing his job to protect and defend citizens. He isn't going to appease her by sharing information. He listens and takes her clues seriously. Officer Brown is the good cop to Rex's bad but even he won't give up anything. He knows better how to deal with little old ladies than Rex does. Rex doesn't have the best track record with women. 2 ex wives, 1 nearly ex-girlfriend!

Book Review: Having a Fudgy Christmas Time by Nancy CoCo

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ stars

First off, let me start by saying that the cover of Having a Fudgy Christmas Time by Nancy CoCo is absolutely adorable and perfectly captures the festive spirit. This novella provides an entertaining read that is both quick-paced and suitably festive, making it a great choice for those looking for a cozy mystery to enjoy during the holiday season.

The story follows Carol, who is excitedly preparing for the Mackinac Island Senior Center Christmas Ball. However, her plans take a dark turn when she discovers a dead man inside the center, with the door jimmied open. As Carol delves into the mystery surrounding the victim, she finds herself rallying her group of silver-haired sleuths to uncover the truth and catch the grinch who tried to steal Christmas.

CoCo's writing style is engaging, and the plot is well-structured, keeping readers guessing and eager to uncover the truth alongside Carol and her book club. The characters are likable and relatable, adding depth to the story and making it easy to become invested in their lives and interactions.

One aspect that stood out in Having a Fudgy Christmas Time is the inclusion of delicious-sounding recipes. CoCo's descriptions of fudge and other treats will leave you craving a sweet treat while reading. These recipes not only add an extra layer to the story but also provide an opportunity for readers to try their hand at creating some festive delights themselves.

While Having a Fudgy Christmas Time is an enjoyable read, it does have some minor flaws. The novella's brevity limits the opportunity for more in-depth character development or intricate plot twists. However, considering its length, CoCo manages to create a well-plotted mystery that will keep readers engaged until the very end.

In conclusion, Having a Fudgy Christmas Time by Nancy CoCo is a delightful novella that delivers on its promise of a cozy mystery with a festive twist. The adorable cover, fast-paced plot, likable characters, and mouthwatering recipes make it an entertaining read. If you're looking for a quick and enjoyable holiday-themed mystery, this book is sure to satisfy your cravings for both fudge and sleuthing adventures.

So pour yourself a cup of hot cocoa, grab a fudge recipe from the book, and settle in for a cozy evening with Having a Fudgy Christmas Time.

I knew I was back on Mackinac Island when the first responders pulled up on snowmobiles. I've fallen in love with this place via this series. We only get a novella this go-round, but it was a fun, quick read. Although the usual main character in this series, Addie, does pop into a few scenes, her only role this time is to offer guidance and good wishes to Carol, who's the main character here. A feisty senior sleuth, Carol is determined to find out who killed Martin Oxford. He's found dead in the senior center and his tale is rather a sad one.

Despite that, the overall focus of the book is the humor of the senior citizen members of the town book club's occasionally impractical, silly, even dangerous plans to lure out the killer. Addie's boyfriend, Officer Rex Manning, only thought he had problems keeping Addie out of his cases. This seniors are willing if not the most able sleuths in town. Unfortunately, as they learn, sleuthing can be not only dangerous to those involved but their friends and associates. Carol is getting threatening phone calls and prowlers and, then, her next-door neighbor is attacked. Was it connected to the crime? Their investigation? Why doesn't Carol share what info of possible use she gets with Rex immediately?

Will that reluctance to share prove hazardous to Carol? What do you think? Her husband is out of town and she has only herself to rely on. Who...oh, never mind. Enough teasers. While I always seem to be left wanting more where novellas are involved, this was a fun, quick read and although, bad me, I didn't recall Carol from previous reads of the series, she is one tough lady. Thanks #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks - #KensingtonCozies for introducing me to her. I'll be on the lookout for her in the next book. In the meantime, I think I may go check out those mouthwatering recipes included. What can I say? I'm a sucker for chocolate.

Having a Fudgy Christmas Time by Nancy Coco is a short, but sweet, cozy mystery featuring Carol Tunisian and her band of elders. Carol is in the process of opening the senior center one morning when she sees the door is already unlocked. As she explores further she turns on the lights in the kitchen where she discovers a body. It looks for all the world like Martin Oxford, a friend, but he is in Texas for the winter. When the paramedics and police arrive they discover it is Martin. It looks like he has been camping out in the senior center. What in the world? She quickly plans an open house for later in the day and rushes home to defrost Christmas cookies and make other preparations. By the time the open house is over, the seniors have a plan and each has their own assignment.

Carol is in her mid-seventies but as warm and friendly as the day is long. She is also clever, quick, and curious. She doesn’t hesitate to follow someone if she needs to know where they are going, or to knock on someone’s door for a visit if she thinks they have answers to her questions. She is really quite endearing. She is married to Barry but encourages his fishing trips so she can have time to herself. She feels quite safe as they have an excellent security system. Her friends all have quirky personalities as well. The book is full of excellent characters, up to and including the police detective, Rex Manning, who is currently seeing her friend, Allie at the McMurphy, a small local hotel and fudge factory. The discovery of the killers was disappointing for all of them. Their friend deserved so much better. It was a cute, simple mystery with humorous and interesting characters. Pretty much what readers have come to expect from Coco.

"Having A Fudgy Christmas Time is a novella in the "Candy Coated Mysteries" by Nancy Coco.

"Fans of the perennially popular Candy-Coated Mystery series featuring Allie McMurphy are treated to a holiday e-novella in which Allie’s frequent sleuthing partner Carol Tunisian gets mixed up in a holiday homicide.

Carol is looking forward to finishing plans for the Mackinac Island Senior Center Christmas Ball. But when she arrives at the center, she finds the door jimmied open and a dead man inside. The victim is a local senior who seems to have been sleeping in the center at night—but why? Although she promises Officer Rex Manning not to involve her book club in solving the mystery, Carol finds a way to fudge around that. Rallying her troop of silver-haired sleuths—and with some support from Ally in between her batches of Christmas fudge -- Carol sets out to discover which grinch tried to steal this Christmas. All she wants from Santa is to get this case wrapped up with a bow!"

My thoughts:
Unlike other books in this series, the story is told from Carol's perspective. Along with help from some of her fellow seniors, she sets out to find out who the killer is. Though it is an interesting twist, the story didn't really gel for me. Carol has always been an outgoing and fairly intelligent character yet her and several other seniors seemed to make some rookie mistakes. You'd think that after all the times they had helped Ally that some of the detecting skills would have rubbed off on them.

There were a couple of dramatic scenes but the reveal and follow up weren't as thorough as in the past so will no doubt leave some readers with a couple of unanswered questions.

Ally, Jenn and other core characters from previous books took a backseat in this one and I actually missed them.

As this was a novella, it was a quick, okay read that included a couple of recipes and a preview of the next book in the series which comes out spring 2024.

Having a Fudgy Christmas Time by Nancy CoCo is a Christmas Themed cozy mystery novella. This particular story has Carol as the main sleuth and what a journey the reader is taken on.

Just before the big holiday ball is to occur, Carol Tunisian (who is in her early 70’s) stumbles across a body in the Senior’s Center. At first, thinking it is just a break in, she proceeds to enter the building only to discover a body. She then calls 9-1-1. Turns out the body is actually a local senior named Martin Oxford. Given that Carol has previously assisted Ally, the main sleuth in the Candy-Coated Mystery Series, Carol proceeds to “help” the local police in trying to find out the truth as to what and why this happened.

Carol enlists the help of fellow book club members in the sleuthing. I found the characters quite the group! But then, I usually enjoy senior citizen sleuths as they seem to be fearless in their pursuit of justice. And their sense of humor is certainly to be enjoyed.

The story overall was a fun, quick read. Unfortunately, I found the brevity of this particular book distracting and I really was looking for more depth as Carol took over the lead “sleuth” role. It seemed that the development of each theory as to who the culprit might be or the possible motive was quickly proven incorrect and promptly dismissed. I guess the depth I was hoping for was missing (even novella’s can have depth).

While I was a wee bit disappointed in the depth of the novella, I did find the read enjoyable (as I do with this author). If you are looking for a quick cozy mystery and you know the character from reading the Candy-Coated Mystery series, then this just might be the holiday themed story for you.

Having a Fudgy Christmas Time by Nancy Coco is a cute story. The story is told from Carol Tunisian’s point of view instead of Allie McMurphy’s. It did take me a beat to adjust. Carol is amusing. I love her attitude. It is winter on Mackinac Island, and I could feel Jack Frost nipping at my nose thanks to the author’s vivid descriptions. I like the author's writing style. It is friendly, which makes the story easy to read. Carol is quick to rally the troops (aka the book club) when a local man is found murdered inside the senior center. Rex Manning may have “requested” (aka told) Carol to keep her nose out of the case and to not involve the senior sleuths. Carol had no intention of listening to Rex (I believe her fingers were crossed behind her back). The mystery is not complex, but it is fun to follow. There are some incidents along the way and the seniors learn sleuthing can be dangerous. I thought it was amusing when Carol would stop a moment during the investigation and wonder what Allie would do (Allie has created a monster). I love the members of the book club. They are a lively, quirky group of seniors. I would be honored to be a part of this book club. There is plenty of holiday cheer as well as tasty treats. The ending was not what I expected. Having a Fudgy Christmas Time is A Candy-Coated Mystery Novella. Fans of the series will enjoy this enjoyable novella and it can be read by those who are new to the series. Having a Fudgy Christmas Time is happy holiday tale with a murdered man, senior sleuths, a cold climate, flavorful fudge, Christmas cookies enticements, menacing calls, and a scheme to catch a killer.

HAVING A FUDGY CHRISTMAS TIME is the sweet Christmas novella in the Candy-Coated Mysteries by Nancy Coco. The colorful and festive cover invites you in for some holiday cheer and then the reader is treated to an intriguing mystery to solve alongside entertaining characters! In this newest release, spunky senior-citizen Carol Tunisian takes the lead point of view. In past books, she and her senior book club have helped the usual protagonist in this series, Allie McMurphy, solve cases. It was so fun seeing Carol get her own book and use her wits and her book club posse to catch the culprit. Carol is certainly a force of nature and a take charge type of woman. Yet, she has a breezy sense of humor that adds to the enjoyment of the story.

As is usual with Ms. Coco’s writing style, the action takes off from the very beginning. The story immediately drew me in and kept me turning pages. Despite the short novella length, the mystery is fast-paced and features all the characters readers have come to love. There were enough suspects to consider and twists to make me question my guesses. In the end, all the threads of the story came together in a highly satisfactory manner.

Having A Fudgy Christmas Time is the perfect novella to cozy up with over the holiday season and read while nibbling some of the Christmas confection recipes included in the book!

Princess Fuzzypants here: The fudge shop mysteries is an entertaining series. This time out, it is the usual supporting cast who take the lead. Senior Carol loves to get involved the various investigations the heroine, Allie, takes on. It has put her in peril before. She’s been around this world long enough that she has to have figured out some life skills but she dives right into the murder of another senior at the seniors centre. Rex, the very capable and long suffering lawman asks her to back off.

Instead of listening to him, she enlists the help of other senior ladies to set a trap to lure the killer. Phone warnings in the middle of the night do not convince her to stop. Getting caught back at the crime scene does not make her stop. Even the attack on one of her friends does not make her stop. And when she has evidence that would give the police a very good clue, she hesitates to share it and puts herself in grave danger.

What finally redeems her from being nominated for a Darwin Award is she belatedly realizes she is at risk and comes up with a strategy that she will be forced to use. The fact that the seniors are not caricatures helps too. Sadly some books can only portray elders as blithering idiots, dangers to themselves and everyone around them. The characters here are highly relatable. Four purrs and two paws up.

Carol Tunisian is getting the Senior Center ready for the Christmas Ball when she discovers the body of a local man who was camping out in the center rather than wintering in Texas as everyone had believed. Why was he there? And what happened to him? Was he the one who trashed the Senior Center or had his killer done the deed?

Early on, I found the switch in main characters for the novellas to be a bit confusing but after reading 11 books in the series it's actually kind of fun to have a new perspective. It's also fun that Allie is now staying on the island year-round and we get to see a glimpse of the setting during the winter time when us tourists can't get there. The investigation in this story was fun, though a few of the things that happened seemed to be recycled from previous books (though if it ain't broke maybe it doesn't need fixin'?) This is a great series and I absolutely love the setting. Definitely one to read if you haven't already!

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

This is a novella length book. It's not the delicious fudge keeping our attention in this edition of the Candy-Coated Mystery series, though mentioned a few times, It's the break in at the senior center with one of the seniors being found deceased. Mackinac Island has the snow flying and the snowmobiles screeching around as we see senior Carol Tunisian's point of view coming to life instead of fudge shop and hotel owner Allie McMurphy. When Carol finds a body in the senior community center all she wants is to reopen the center for the holiday festivities, but the police say no go because it's a crime scene. With the police being too slow for her taste she takes matters into her own hands to get this crime solved. Carol rousts up the other seniors on the island as they may just be putting themselves in harm's way to get this thing solved. Get ready for an adventure of threatening late night threatening phone calls and hushed warnings. Will Carol be able to solve the crime before any more harm comes to her or her friends? A great addition to the series that had me guessing until the end.

Having A Fudgy Christmas Time
(Candy Coated Mystery 11.5)
Nancy Coco

The latest Fudgy mystery opens with a gasp. We arrive at the senior center with Carol Tunisian to prepare to for the Christmas Ball. Only to find Martin dead! The same Martin, who’s supposed to be wintering in Texas.

Rex asks Carol to stay out of the investigation and not to involve Allie. Well, I blame Rex, (lol) he should have known he was asking too much of poor Carol, especially with Barry gone fishing! Carol and the book club aren’t about to let the Ball be canceled it’s too important for the community. This provides funding for senior winter events including meals. Also, it’s even more personal after Missy is attacked!

With about 230 pages and 17 chapters, it is a hefty and enjoyable addition to the Candy Coated series. Two holiday-friendly recipes Chocolate Cheesecake Bars and Maple Fudge are also included. A bonus treat is the first chapter of Three Fudges & a Baby.
5*****

Give Fudge A Chance is the previous full-length mystery in the series.
