It's a painting that disappeared into the blackmarket decades ago, but I know where to find it. The only person standing in my way is her . Nothing will stop me winning the game, not even the sultry, quick witted brunette who lures me into her painting studio with the most irresistible bait. I have no option to fail at The Game. I wished she would trust me, and that was the most selfish thing I could possibly ask…because I had every intention of taking her trust and using it for my own gain.

I have clearly been living under a rock, because I only discovered Tate James books this year. I know! I know! I'm kicking myself, trust me. I started with her Madison Kate series and proceeded on an immediate binge of Tate's backlist. And now here we are and desperately addicted to her words.
You think pretty highly of yourself, don’t you Tris?” His question was sharper than teasing, and it made me pull up short.
I whirled around to glare at the big, handsome prick.
“Yes, John. I do. It’s called confidence and self-respect. If that’s a problem for you, absolutely no one is making you continue this conversation. In fact, I’m actively trying to leave.”

One thing I absolutely love about Tate's books are her sassy, witty, and sex positive heroines. They're not blushing wallflowers and I can't get enough of them. Tristian was no exception.

I loved everything about this heroine, including the way she made John work. She's not interested in anything from men beyond scratching an itch. And lately, the men she meets can't even do that right. So when the infuriating and handsome newcomer at her college turns out to be the new professor who she will be TA'ing for... Well, let's just say sparks fly. The chemistry between these two is sizzling. And the banter! Oh dear lord the banter! I couldn't get enough of it.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, John…but yours isn’t the only dick in town.” Her leg flexed, pushing me away far enough that she could hop off the desk. She picked up her bag and tucked the strap over her shoulder as my brain frantically processed what she’d said.
“Venus, you better not be saying that—”
“Sorry, Casanova, I can’t chat. I have a date.” Her wink fucking slayed me, and then she was sashaying out of the class with that short skirt swaying like a red flag in a bull pen.

John is mysterious, enigmatic, and practically oozes BDE (big d*ck energy for those not familiar). But John is also not who he makes himself seem and his cover at the school is his way on his mission to win the "game" that pits the most infamous thieves against each other. I loved peeling back the layers on this guy. I loved watching him fall for Tris as unwilling as it was. And he did fight it at every turn.

And then the cliffhanger hits you and holy mother. I should be used to these jaw droppers from Tate considering I binged 6 books of hers in a row. But I also wasn't in a situation where I had to wait for the next book. And now that I do? I think I'm slowly dying inside.

Oh Tate James- you naughty girl. Tate weaves such a intricately told and deliciously intriguing story in Heist. Enigmatic, charismatic, ultra sexy, and hella funny, Heist is not only a stylish adventure of deceit and magnetic chemistry, it's also a whole lot of fun. It's a delightful breath of fresh air- but of course, with that characteristic Tate James edge and flash. Another epic page turner- and I can' t wait for more!

I honestly picked up this book and my body refused to put it back down. I read this in one sitting even though it’s now 5am and I have work in three hours, but honestly? No regrets.

Heist has all the amazing elements of a Tate James book and more. I was very intrigued by an MF romance after reading multiple love interests from Tate for so long and I am not disappointed. I love both main characters and cannot wait to learn more from them, because that little surprise at the end has me needing all the information.

This coupling has BANTER and the chemistry is phenomenal. I cannot tell you how many highlights I have of a come back that made me giggle. These two idiots will be on my mind until I can read book 2 and then they’ll never leave, but I’m not mad about it.

If you are already a Tate book loved, you’ll love this new series/book. If you’re new, try it out! You won’t regret it, the only thing you MAY regret is she’s the queen of keeping you on your toes and in suspense until the next release.

Leave it to Tate James to take a trope that I usually hate but write it in a way that has me loving it and begging for more! Ok, I got a little ahead of myself there but I was impressed! John is completely over the top and has a tendency to repeatedly disregard personal boundaries and for some reason I was eating it up! 🤣 He was also very possessive and I found his train of thought and the vibe of the book in general to be way funnier than I was expecting and as a result, I was laughing almost the entire time! John and Tris' chemistry was scorching from the second they met and their banter was even better! Tate definitely made us work for the spice but when we got there it was so worth it and I cannot wait to see more of these two together! I was also impressed with how she was able to make characters like Nelson and Hank take on a life of their own and really let them shine whenever they appeared, what can I say? I just love me some well developed side characters! 🤌🏻

Now to address the cliffhanger that you're all probably wondering about... it obviously blew my mind. I had to immediately think back and reconsider everything I had read and thought I knew and I already have several theories about multiple aspects of that ending. But if I thought these two went at it before, the fallout when we come back is going to make the previous back and forth look like child's play! They are going to be at each other's throats and I cannot wait to see it! 😈

*This is definitely some of Tate's lighter work but that's not to say there aren't any potentially triggering scenes, if you've read Tate before then you will probably be ok but just something for those that haven't to keep in mind!*

This is my first book from Tate James and whilst I wasn't blown away, I did enjoy this book.

John Smith, renowned thief is in the final of 'the Games', a competition for criminals where they compete against each other in various tasks (usually stealing). He has won the last four games but this fifth one is the most important, as his grandfather's estate is the prize. In the final round, he has to steal a painting from Mr. Grimaldi, a mafia boss with a basement full of stolen paintings. John realises his only way in is to seduce Mr. Grimaldi's art restorer, Tristian.

This book had all the features to be amazing but something was missing for me, and I can't quite put my finger on it. I found the FMC to be slightly annoying but did warm to her towards the end. I also wasn't blown away by the MMC and the tension between them wasn't there for me. I honestly just kept reading to see whether John Smith would steal the painting and if the plot twist was going to be what I thought it would be... the answer is yes, it was as I predicted.

Overall, not the amazing start I wanted for the year but not the worst! I believe fans of Tate James would enjoy this trilogy. I will be starting book two immediately as book one ends on a pretty decent cliffhanger.

I won't be finishing this series.
The thing about anything that keeps going is thatthere's a 90% chance it could be ruined, such is the case with the Shadow Grove world. Madison Kate will always be my favorite, Hades was good enough, the Guild was boring, this one though? has me at my limit with this world.
With every book the author puts out in this world, the lazier the writing. Both the fmc and mmc book had the same exact character. And sometimes we need more than huge cliffhangers to enjoy a book.
I might give future Shadow Grove books a chance but i have no hope they'll be any better 🤷🏻‍♀️

I always fall for the damn cliffhangers. Tate always does them and I always go 😯😦😲

This was definitely not my fav Tate book. I actually wasn’t a fan of John.

For starters, John??

What an un-sexy name in general.

Two, he was kinda a creep. Not in a cute stalkery way, just plain old creepy way.

Three, I despise age gap, and didn’t realize this had one (not really on the book, mostly on me for not knowing).

Finally, Tris was basically all of Tate’s other FMCs in terms of attitude and personality. There was nothing new. She didn’t make smart choices and was a brat. End of story.

I was torn between giving this 4 or 5 stars; it’s somewhere in between 🤔

Following a master thief during a game of great significance, where he has to defend his legacy, he needs to find and retrieve a famous lost painting. During this quest, we meet a sassy young artist who he believes to be his way in; however, she is a bit of a challenge.
The book was very entertaining, but it felt a bit slow, or maybe it was missing something. It wasn’t as good as the other books in the Shadow Grove universe.

Not my favorite of James' world. It's Shadow Grove adjacent and it's introducing a lot of new characters while having a few guest appearances by some old ones.

The cliffhanger at the end wasn't that shocking if you caught on to the breadcrumb trail of clues Tate laid along the way.

okay, first of all: THAT ENDING. I TOTALLY CALLED IT. I KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP.

That aside, hi. I don't know why I keep reading incomplete CLIFFHANGER prone series, but I do. on the bright side, book two is already out. on the sad side, IDK when book three is coming.

This is lighter than the shadow grove books (BUT CAN BE READ INDEPENDENTLY FROM SHADOW GROVE! It's just nice to see the cameos and little nods to what has happened in SG). The main character is John Smith (aka Hermes, aka that guy who steals things from impenetrable places) and he's participating in The Game, where other thieves compete to see who is the top thief. In order to get to this year's target, he has to get close to Tris, an art TA working for a crime lord who's the last known owner of the target painting.

We have a teacher/student relationship? White collar art crime vibes? A man obsessed and a woman who embraces her femininity and plays into her sensuality? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP.

I loved how obsessed John was. The guy literally breaks into Tris' place time and time again to just check on her while she's sleeping and steal her vibrators. We love an Edward Cullen moment. He's big and beefy, but slippery and suave. I really liked Tris too! She's the right amount of stubborn and sassy.

Also I was cackling when I realized what exactly John was doing for the Dean to keep him hush-hush.

Can't wait to see what happens next!

Okay so thank you to Tate for my EARC in exchange for an honest review.

This story blew me away. I was always so curious about Hermes throughout all the other Shadow Grove stories and I’m so glad this is where TJ took us! It was so addicting, sexy and perfectly paced! The writing was stellar as always, and the characters had me wishing this one didn’t end.

Heist is book 1 of 3 in this series and it was an absolutely banger. I read it as slow as I could because I can’t wait for book 2. John (Hermes) is a behemoth of a sexy man and also the world greatest thief, Tristian is an art grad student who becomes hot for the prof. Their worlds collide with the Game and a priceless piece of art. He thinks he’s using her…but just wait until the end.

I absolutely love that there is an age gap along with a student-teacher romance. These two were so well done by Tate I can’t wait to see her do more! I 1000x recommend this one. It’s not her steamiest but the spicy is perfectly on point. It’s not dark, but has a splash. MK will always be my favorite by her, but this one definitely takes 2nd. I absolutely can not wait for Forgery!

Tropes:

▫️Enemies to lovers
▫Age gap
▫️ Professor/Student

💬 Thoughts:

Heist is the first book in a new series set in the Shadow Grove world. It is not essential to have read the previous Shadow Grove series, but I would highly recommend to read them first!

This book follows John, a thief and art professor and Tris, an art student and TA.

John has once again thieved his way into the final of “the game”. He has won the past 4, but this time the prize is his grandfather's legacy, the Valenshek fortune and he will do anything to win. Even seduce an innocent TA who happens to have access to the location of the final task. He made a less than impressive first impression though, so it is proving harder than he thought to get close to her.

I loved Johns unflappable personality, he remained calm no matter what and the more insults Tris threw at, him the more turned on it made him. Their verbal banter was foreplay for them both and their chemistry was delicious to read!

Tate is the queen of cliff-hangers, and she always leaves you wanting more and questioning everything you thought you just read.

This book was brilliant, and I will be very impatiently waiting for book 2!

I never know what to expect from Tate James, but this exceeded every expectation I had and then some. This was so so good. Tate writes such good female main characters - they are always so badass and funny. And don't even get me started on John... this man. He was HOT. and possessive, and ugh I loved him. Getting to read about them getting together was so fun and the angst and tension was *chef's kiss*. The story was full of twists and turns and I couldn't get enough! I do wish the cliffhanger was worked into more of a plot twist a bit before the end but she still had my jaw on the FLOOR at the end and I cannot wait for the second one!! Thank you Peachy Keen & Tate for the ARC :)

🖤Cliffhanger

The MMC John is a trained theiff and has strategically put himself into Tris's life. Tris works as a artist for a very rich family and John needs a way in. Little did he know he had gotten to close. The chemistry between these 2 MC is amazing.

I need more of these 2 characters ❤️ and that cliffhanger 😳 This is definitely a must read!

⭐️ 5/5 🌶 4/5

What the mother forking h-e-double hockey sticks?! Gah!!! Every time! Tate and her cliff hangers get me every damn time! Clearly I’m a glutton for punishment and a masochist because I absolutely love it and I always come back for more, and I will forever be a Tate James lemming and yeet myself right off that cliff!

YEET!

No word of a lie I don’t even know where to begin! This book had so many twists and turns, and just when I thought I knew what was happening, BAM! The mother of all twists!

Ivy/Tris/Tristan is such an amazing character with so much depth and so much spunk! She seems timid, innocent, and scared at times, and like a head down kind of woman. And then there are times when she’s spitfire on heels, sassy as all hell, and has balls bigger than most guys.

Then there’s John. Great at blending in and not standing out, while also hot as hell, with an ego the size of space, and a giant alpha hole! His character drives me up the wall at times, while also drawing me in and making me love him. He irritates irritates the heck out of me, yet at the same time I find myself yelling at Tris to just forgive him already, climb him like a tree in search of his nuts, and eff him repeatedly like an animal in heat!

This book has action, suspense, spice, romance, enemies to lovers, banter, and keeps you on the edge of your seat (I legit almost fell off my couch).

Word of advice.. keep a tight grip on your book or kindle if you know what’s good for you and it so you don’t yeet it across the room at the end!

This was a 5 ⭐ for me!

I received a free copy of this ARC from Tate James via Peachy Keen and I was sooooo thankful for it!

Non-spoiler review - Once again, Tate James has written an amazing story that pulls you in and you just can't put it down. I read this in one sitting! All responsibilities and problems were totally forgotten.

The Game is a contest that happens every year that is put on by the elite of the criminal underworld. John Smith has won the last 5 games, and with everything on the line he does not intend on losing this time either. He's willing to do whatever it takes to win - but he doesn't count on Tris Ives.

“I have no option to fail at The Game. It’s my legacy.
The Valenshek Legacy.”

This book is probably (so far anyone) the least dark of the Shadow Grove books, but it still has that air of danger and intrigue. As per normal Tate James - the ending will throw you for a loop. I was left sitting there with my jaw dropped going - wait...what?

This book is written in both John and Tris’s POV. Tris is a great FMC. I LOVED her banter with John and seeing her relationship with Nelson and Hank. It was also great to watch John catch feelings.

Guys, don’t wait to read this. Yes, there is a cliff but it is SO good. (And the cliff isn’t her worst by any means!) Suffer with the rest of us until May wondering what will happen next!

Plot 4.5/5
Pace 5/5
Character Personality 4.5/5
Character Growth 4.5/5
Spice 4.5/5
Writing Style 5/5
World Building 5/5 (this is set in Shadow Grove world, there were some cameo appearances from other series but I didn’t feel like you NEEDED to have read the other books at all for this one to make sense)

My only complaint about Tris is how easily she disregards certain missing objects and her door being unlocked. This is just dumb and unsafe. But honestly, I am sure I would be the same. But come on, how many times do you have to replace something before you wonder where it is going?!

Also, I am surprised I didn’t see that ending coming. I had thought it once or twice earlier on but then kind of forgot about my inclinations. Thus, I was totally blindsided for a second!

There has to be an absolute talent behind a book that was angsty, spicy, and thrilling, and a book that managed to make mew spew the water I was drinking out in a public setting because I was laughing so hard. This was such a refreshing and new take on a professor student romance, and I absolutely adored every second of it! Professor Smith is new to Boles, and a notorious thief, and his newest conquest involves using the heart of his TA to secure a prize, but when he starts off on the wrong foot, he's playing an entirely different game than he ever imagined. Tris is everything I love in a heroine, she can be vulnerable and relatable, but mainly she is quick whited, has a sharp tongue, and takes no nonsense from the devilishly handsome professor. Their banter was cunning and quick that made me both laugh and vocalize 'ouch' from their digs towards one another. The stakes are high but what was meant to be a simple game turns into string of deceit, sticky fingers, and a trail of heartache. In a very typical Tate James fashion, there is a gut wrenching cliffy, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!

This book is great for those who love an age gap romance, workplace romance, and a professor student romance. If you like you heroines feisty and cunning, Tate James crafted an excellent on in this read. You can also expect to see a little bit of enemies to lover, a touch of forbidden love, and a bit of an adrenaline rush! I cannot wait for the rest of the books in this series to come out!

the cliffhanger?!!! my jaw dropped.
i loved this book and i loved both the main characters. i can’t wait to learn more about them them and see their development throughout the trilogy. their banter was top tier. the chemistry and sexual tension…oooo hot hot hot.

Tris: she’s sassy, witty, sex positive and hardworking!
John: he’s mysterious and oozesssss BDE. he’s a thief whos final task to win “the game” is to steal something only Tris has access to. i loved watching him fall for Tris and watching him fight his real feelings. i’m really interested to see how their relationship turns after all that’s happened.

the amount of vibrators Tris bought only for John to sneak in her house in the middle of the night to steal them all💀💀💀💀 i loved them.

fav quotes📖

“Subtle, John, real subtle. Maybe next time just flop your dick out on the cake and see if anyone wants to suck it.”

“And for the record, that was more than just great sex, so don’t even pretend you’ve had better.”

“Want to duck out early and fuck in the back of a limo?”

𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑠𝑡 ( Valenshek series #1 )

I absolutely love love love everything that this author writes. She is the queen of cliff hangers and the way she writes is absolutely amazing. This book is the first book in the series Valenshek.. Legacy and is set in the Shadow Grove world and I highly recommend reading those books too.

This book is enemies to lovers, age gap romance, grumpy/sunshine read that will grip you right from the off.
John is the professor and Tris.. Is his student. John is very possessive and an alpha male. Tris..is a beautiful, fiesty hot woman who is younger than him and is giving him a real run for his money. She doesn't take any crap and the chemistry between them both is sizzling hot.

Once you start reading a Tate James book you just can't stop turning the pages as fast as you can read the words. I love the way that this author writes and how she literally brings the story to life and hooks the reader right in. I highly recommend this book and everything.. this author writes. Another mind blowing read that I loved.

Heist

6/5⭐ extra star read "I's a mystery" Tate & Heather like to say that when it comes to whats coming next. The best phrase. When i finished Heist i was left thinking Wow just wow. What masterful writing, and story telling. We get inside the head of well written characters. John falling for someone even whe  their is a lot on the line for him. We see his side and explore is conflict between falling and what that means for his purpose. And Tris is such a likeable and relatable character. Fesity, fierce, smart but also human. Her reactions felt like ones I would have and i loved that. She was down to earth and relatable. And their chemistry together is so great and so fun to read. There were some truly funny lines in this. John & Tris humar is my kind of humar. The story of the Heist as a theif John is planning that means something personal to him in the game. Tris working for the mob restoring art and all that comes with the dangers of the job. The Ta grad student/professor fun, The back stories, and neighbors. And so much more. I can't give it away but twists and turns and the ending is soooo good. And great steamy scene. Like i said with Tate guild series ive read nothing like it. This one is MF and im here for it. And we get some mentions of the guild which is fun. This was a great enjoyable read and truley brilliant. What always rasining the bar. Highly Recommend.

Heist is book one in the Valenshek trilogy. A MF romance set in the Shadow Grove world.

Tate mentions in the author note that this is the lightest of the Shadow Grove series and I would definitely agree. I'd call it contemporary romance with a splash of dark.

The prologue definitely piqued my interest with action and the glimpse of what might be to come. But it appeared that there was very little action in this book being a slow burn. It was more focused on the building dynamic between John and Tris, with their banter and snark providing entertaining tension and the Game task that John had been set.

Small appearances from Shadow Grove favourites was a nice touch, some obvious and others a little more stealthy. I do hope we get a few more in the future books. Personally I found the side characters to pull my attention more than our leads so I really hope we see more of them in future books. This being a 'it's me and not you' thing, I vibe more with darker elements and characters these days.

If you're looking to dip your toe into a lighter read within the Shadow Grove world I would definitely recommend starting here. While set in the Shadow Grove world I don't feel it necessary to have read the previous series to understand this book.

John is a professor taking over at Boles University but with ulterior motives. He’s part of The Game and on the hunt for his winning heist. Tristan is a TA at the university (for the classes John comes in to teach) but also Johns main target to get what he wants, until what he wants becomes her too. She’s also this incredible artist and has the most incredible neighbors who are like family to her.

It’s a bit taboo and forbidden but he puts his foot down and doesn’t care and determined to have her.

The chemistry between these two is incredible. There is fantastic banter and the chase and tease is there too. The side characters all play great parts to weave their way into the story and build so much for what’s going on in this Valenshek world.

Omg this book was fantastic, but I expect nothing less from Queen Tate James. After so many why choose from her I really enjoyed a MF and it was unlike anything I’ve read from her. They dynamic and the story felt so different in such a refreshing, fantastic way. But still so Tate, and I loved all the sprinkled in Easter eggs and visits from some past faves.

Woah, I am in shock. This cliffhanger I was just left on had my mouth on the floor and my eyes bugged out. I read this book in one whole setting and time didn’t even exist. I busted out laughing several times while my dog looked at me like there was something wrong. Let’s be real this book was amazing. This is hands down one of my favorite books that I have read recently.

Tristian is a strong, independent, and beautiful woman. She will not take any crap from anyone. She will hand a man their marbles just as fast as they overstepped. I truly was in awe of this woman. I found myself cheering her on. By the end, I truly was flabbergasted but if anyone could do that it would be Tris.

John came in strong and even though I loved every minute that Tris destroyed him, I also was ready for him to redeem himself. This man was obsessive and I was here for it. The things that he did and said had me swooning over here. I need John in my life, ok?

Tate James is one of my favorite authors out there and I recommend everything she writes. Heist is hands down another five-star read from Tate. I highly recommend reading this book because I know you’ll love it.

Authour Tate James @tatejamesauthor
Heis

“Is that jealousy, Miss Ives? Green is particularly sexy on you, I must admit.”

“Fucking John Smith,” she cursed. “Dream stealing fuck-bag!”

“Last I checked, you were neither my keeper nor my lover, so why the hell would I care for your thinly veiled judgment?” “Not yet,” he shot back so quickly and full of promise that I choked on the sip of wine I’d just taken."

Well, Tate did it again but is anyone surprised by this? No, we’re not surprised by this. Because damn another amazing book filled with Tate James' humor and spice. I cannot stop thinking about it and of course that cliffhanger, I have so many questions and I’m already counting down the days until the next book.

The chemistry and banter between these two were perfect. I couldn't get enough of it. I was kept on the edge of my seat as to where their story was going to go. Every time I turned the page I was surprised and had no idea where their story was going to go, but that is what makes Tate’s books so addicting. I could write so much more about this story but when it comes to Tate’s books you want to go in blind as it is all about the adventure and I have never been disappointed with her writing.

Read this book and fall in love with the characters just as I have and hold on tight because this story is a wild ride. You might even get a glimpse of some of your favorite characters from the shadow grove world.

Tate James stated at the start of this book that it wasn’t as dark as her others and she really meant it. I was a bit thrown at how little action there was because in a state book you normally don’t have time to catch your breath. That being said the snark, banter and sexual tension between the hero and heroine was fire. This was a classic enemies to lovers with the hate being off the scale. The premise of the plot was so original and kept me hooked.

But my favourite things was that cliffhanger! It was pure brilliance, I can’t stop laughing. I did not see that coming but I am here for it 🙌🏻

I have been so excited for this book since I first heard about it. I adore Tate Jame’s books and this one did not let me down! Tris is a fabulous FMC; able to see behind BS, independent, not afraid to stand up for herself. I absolutely love how John is this suave, confident man who is always landing on the wrong foot with Tris. The fire and tension between these two is melting hot! The intrigue, secrets, and suspense had me devouring this book. Of course there is a bit of a cliff hanger, this is Tate James we are talking about here. It would not be her book if there was not one! However, this one did not make me almost break my kindle soooo… I cannot wait for the next part in this series!

Heist was just simply incredible. The characters were fantastic, and the story was terrific. I loved it!

Tris is an absolute delight of a FMC! She was fierce and fiery but had an excellent head on her shoulders. She was pretty unflappable, except, of course, when it came to John. And oh, John! He was arrogant, smug, and a bit of an alphahole. But honestly, that was all earned! I mean, he is Hermes, after all! These two were great on their own, but together they were straight fire! All the banter! Some of the most entertaining characters I have read! Hank and Nelson were also outstanding! I need more of them!

Not only does Heist have phenomenal characters, but the story was amazing. I loved all of the intrigue and deception. The dual POV was also a great addition. Knowing what John's end game is, seeing him struggle with it. And I don't want to spoil anything, but the ending was so great! I cannot wait to see what happens next. I have a feeling it is going to send me into a fit of giggles.

Heist may be my favorite Tate James book. Everything about it was just the best!
