Some vendettas can never be forgotten...

When Sherman Rehabilitation Center suffers its first murder in decades, authorities race to find a motive as the media swarms. The brutality is unprecedented, even in a prison setting. One week later, eighty-seven-year-old Elmer Ray walks into the local Ohio Highway Patrol Post, claiming he has the answers. First, they need to hear about the two most interesting people in the Adrian Franklin and Conner Wallace.

Adrian Franklin, the young neighbor of Elmer Ray, lived a troubled life of neglect and abuse. He had a bad haircut and a worst nickname. The older man tries to take the boy under his wing in a way no one else has ever done. For Adrian, most see a quick temper and lost soul. Elmer sees something different in him, a sense of loyalty and a yearning to be loved.

Conner Wallace, a British National, a drifter on a motorcycle, and a pugilist with a quick wit, roamed the west and lived by an unbreakable moral code that got him in more trouble than he bargained for. After a five-year bit in a Nevada prison, he finds a safe haven in the underground fight scene on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

What does a young boy and foreigner have to do with a brutal prison murder in the sleepy town of Sherman, Ohio? Only Elmer Ray knows the answers. And he isn't giving them until the Post Commander hears how their lives converge with an Appalachian drug dealer, a sexual predator, and a mob boss to influence the brutality in that prison cell.

The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart is a shocking and raw account combining a coming-of-age tale with a disturbing psychological thriller.

A great story about friendship, love and loss. I flew through the second half of this book and didn’t want it to end. Elmer and Adrian’s relationship was so heartwarming. The twist at the end left me speechless. Definitely recommend!!

I'm not a huge fan of a slow burn but this was done so expertly. Before you knew what was happening you were sucked in, became Clark's bitch and you had no choice but to get on board and let him tell his story HIS way. And it worked! A really great story about deep love, loss, grief and vengeance. Adrian was so raw, stripped bare, and deeply traumatized that even when he did unspeakable things you were so invested in him you forgave him, (or at least saw where he was coming from). Old man Elmer was like a salve to Adrian's deep wounds. The relationship between them was masterfully handled and palpable. Every time Adrian got knocked down, (which only got revealed in drips and drabs you had to piece together) I kept thinking how much more can this man handle. Although it was revealed in the beginning, the way the story unfolded it seemed like a twist at the end that hits you like a frying pan to the face! I usually figure out the ending of stories pretty quickly, this one knocked me right out my socks! And even though Adrian kept getting back up, it was Elmer (at 87 years old) who showed true strength and resilience. We all could use an Elmer in our lives. I highly recommend readers to grab this book. Well worth the read!

The older I get, the less patience I have for fiction. If a story fails to grab my attention in the first few pages, I cast it aside with zero regret. Life is too short to read bad fiction. The Devil Won't Keep US Apart by first time author Shane T. Clark managed to keep my attention to the very end. Part mystery and part thriller, The Devil Won't Keep US Apart is at its best when exploring the complex relationships within the story. The characters are engaging, believable, and draw the reader in. As the story unfolded, I found myself actively trying to solve the mystery, yet never quite figured it out. This is a great effort by a first time author and I look forward to reading more from Shane T. Clark.

Word of warning to sensitive readers, there are some intense scenes within the pages of this story and some foul language, but nothing that felt too gratuitous.

This book tells the story of the bond of a troubled young boy and his elderly neighbor who took him under his wing. The story starts out with the old man explaining a crime to a detective that happened in a nearby prison and all the events that led up to that moment. It ends in a twist and leaves us with all the emotions of loss, regret, and wanting to turn back time.
I enjoyed this book mainly because it was a slow burn, with the ending of each chapter reeling me in just enough to want to see what happens next. The story is also told from different points in time and by three different characters, This book captured the sadness of people who do not grow up privileged and need to rely on the kindness of others to help them believe in themselves.
I would definitely recommend this book to others.

The Devil Won't Keep US Apart is a diabolical psychological thriller and journey into the depths of darkness.

The backstory is that of a brutal murder that occurred at Sherman Rehabilitation Center. As the police are searching for answers, in enters Elmer Ray, an elderly man, who says he knows who committed the crime and why. Before providing the answers, he says he’s going to tell a story. The story of a troubled young man, Adrian Franklin, who he took under his wing and tried to guide and nurture, and that of a drifter, a British national named Connor Wallace, on a quest to settle a score.

The characters in The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart are well-developed and relatable. They possess depth and complexity, making them more than mere archetypes. Clark skillfully explores the nuances of human relationships, capturing the highs and lows with sensitivity and authenticity.

Carefully and skillfully weaving a complex narrative riddled with intriguing characters and emotional depth, Clark’s exceptional ability at storytelling is one to commend. Clark delivers an engrossing reading experience with an intricately and exceptionally crafted plot that blends the elements of mystery, suspense, and thrill seamlessly.

With his background as an adjunct professor of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Deviant Behavior, author Shane T. Clark weaves a tale of violence and vengeance that stays with you long after reading the final chapter. Five stars, I recommend adding this story to your collection.

Thank you to Shane T. Clark and NetGalley for the ARC and for Shane Clark for publishing this masterpiece.

This is a good story that needed a better editor before it was published.

The concept is intriguing but the delivery is fractured in a way that constantly makes you say “HUH?!?!”. Secondary characters who are irrelevant are introduced with no explanation during conversation which makes you wonder who they are and when they came into the story.

There are a lot of grammatical errors that an editor should have caught. The chapters with a lot of dialogue made my head hurt. There were problems with pronoun-antecedent agreement that made me wonder who we were talking about. The fragmented format and the date jumping had me wondering when it was all going to make sense. Overall I think a better foreshadowing , starting with the murder of Susan would have made the book more interesting .Also it should have started with a lead in of why “the devil won’t keep us apart” is a significant phrase .

But all in all it was a great story.

The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart by Shane T. Clark is a suspense novel and revenge story crafted around a father-son relationship between an elderly man, Elmer Ray, and his next-door neighbor, Adrian Franklin. I received a gifted copy of the book in exchange for an honest review from the author via Booktasters, and here it is. 🙂

The characters of The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart range from hopeful, pain-filled, troubled, and revenge-seeking. Through these characters and chapters alternating between the past and present, we piece together the people and events that have been the catalyst to a present-day prison murder.

Surprisingly, a murder happening INSIDE the prison is what’s shocking residents of Sherman, Ohio, and has everyone’s mouths and ears ablaze. Although murder is no stranger to this small town, one such as this is. Everyone is gabbing about it except for Elmer Ray until he receives unexpected mail that could be the closure the city needs after such a horrific event.

That’s if anyone will actually listen to him. Elmer Ray can be a little long-winded (lol).

Admittedly, The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart took me more time to complete than it should for a 310-page book. It’s not because of the content that my reading experience proved difficult. It’s because of the following that it was such:

* The usage of similes and metaphors was heavy-handed or oddly placed.
* The overall story could have been better stitched, as the switching between years and characters was a little chaotic.

AND

* I was often lost when several people were speaking because there was a lack of differentiation between speakers. Thus, the dialogue felt unnatural sometimes and needed breaks between scenes. Funny enough, the characterization wasn’t the cause of my confusion. It was the formatting and sentence structure.

Hence, I share the same sentiments as a majority of written reviews in saying that this book needs an editor and some fine-tuning here and there.

Once you get past this minor-to-mid hiccup, the story is quite good. The suspense is there, the pacing is medium, and the story rarely dragged. It continuously had me asking questions and wondering if my assumptions were correct.

What I find most impactful about the story is how the author managed to tug on my heartstrings through the characters. In particular, there is one well-earned full circle moment for all characters that didn’t make me cry, but caused a reaction out of me. I may or may not have said “aww” and put my hand over my heart. I’m not telling. So, you’ll have to read the book to see if it evokes the same emotions from you. 😉

Please note that these are some content warnings that stood out to me. They are in no particular order and range from minor to moderate appearances throughout the book:

* Animal Abuse
* Domestic Abuse
* Alcoholism
* Violence
* Murder
* Sexual Assault/Rape of a Minor
* Fire
* Suicide
* Death of a Child
* Death of a Parent

Thank you again to Shane T. Clark and Booktasters for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. My review/reaction is voluntary, all thoughts are mine and unbiased, and receiving the gifted copy does not influence my rating and/or recommendation.

I hope this review of Shane T. Clark’s ‘The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart‘ finds you well.

The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart by Shane T. Clark presents morally complex narrative that delves into themes of guilt and loyalty. The character dynamics are compelling, and the unique concept behind the story will surely intrigue readers who appreciate emotional depth and ambiguity. There's plenty to appreciate here, especially for those who enjoy unraveling complex moral conflicts.

However, the pacing in The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart becomes disrupted due to how the narrative switches between past and present timelines. This blending of timelines, while aiming to build suspense and offer backstory, can sometimes feel disjointed, especially when crucial scenes drag on or when it's unclear whether the focus is on a past event or the present. The overlap between the two timelines could benefit from more structured transitions to help maintain narrative momentum and clarity. The balance between "show and tell" could also be improved, as the book leans more towards telling, which occasionally undermines the impact of key moments.

Additionally, the mystery behind Adrian's death lacked subtlety. The hints about the culprit felt a bit too predictable, making the reveal less impactful than it could have been. A more nuanced approach might have kept readers guessing longer and added an extra layer of suspense.

Despite these issues, The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart has strong points that shine through. The concept and moral ambiguity are thought-provoking, and once the pace picks up, it becomes an engaging read. Clark clearly has a talent for exploring complex emotions, and with a little more refinement in pacing and subtlety, his storytelling could reach even greater heights.

Thank you to Booktasters and Shane T. Clark in exchange for an honest review.

Journeying into the depths of the human psyche, this book offers a chilling and unflinchingly honest exploration.

It excels particularly as a psychological thriller, consistently keeping readers on the edge of their seats through the author's masterful creation of a tense and suspense-laden atmosphere.

With its unexpected twists and turns, the narrative continuously challenges readers to reevaluate their assumptions, leaving them pondering the true intentions and natures of the characters.

This is unquestionably a book worth adding to your reading list. In the tranquil confines of a small Ohio town, where such horrors were unforeseen, a gruesome murder within the prison facility shatters the peace.

As the story unfolds, introducing additional characters and complications, it becomes increasingly intricate and captivating, deepening the initial conflict.

This suspenseful tale weaves together the lives of an elderly man, a young man marked by a troubled childhood, and a foreign visitor.

The novel takes unexpected turns, but I found its unpredictability to be a standout feature. It's a thoughtfully crafted work with well-drawn characters and an original theme that sets it apart.

Overall, The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart by Shane T. Clark is a suspenseful and entertaining read for fans of thriller and noir fiction. This book gave me Devil in a Blue Dress vibes. The premise of an old man recounting a story that goes back and forth on the timeline is intriguing, but at times the point of view character can be difficult to keep track of. Despite this, the bond and relationship between the main character and Bam/Adrian is endearing and believable, which makes the main character's emotional turmoil understandable.

One issue with the book is the dialogue written to represent dialect, which can be confusing. A better approach would have been to state the tone, accent, or dialect while keeping the dialogue in regular spelling. It would have also been helpful if each point of view had a chapter, allowing the story to progress forward and paint a complete picture, as seen in other noir crime-related books.

Despite its flaws, the book is still a thrilling ride with a captivating hook that keeps readers curious about how the story will unfold. Overall, The Devil Won’t Keep Us Apart is a recommendable read for fans of suspense thrillers and noir fiction.

"The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart" is a shocking and gritty novel that transports us to a dark world of crime and redemption. This story is set at the Sherman Rehabilitation Center and begins by a brutal murder, which has not happened in decades in this prison setting. Authorities and journalists are trying to figure out why, but the surprising answer can be found in two seemingly unrelated characters: Adrian Franklin and Conner Wallace. Adrian Franklin, a young neighbour of the elderly Elmer Ray, has experienced neglect and abuse throughout his life. Elmer becomes her protector and guide, offering comprehension and support that no one else has.

Conner Wallace, on the other hand, is a British citizen. His life connects with Adrian and Elmer's in unexpected ways, and his presence helps to solve the mystery of the brutal murder at Sherman Prison.

The author's prose is enthralling, with an engrossing narrative that immerses you in the psychology of the characters and prompts you to consider the limits of morality and redemption. The plot is well-developed, with unexpected twists and unexpected details that keep the reader guessing until the very end.

From the very first page to the closing chapter, this book had me utterly engrossed.

It's the kind of narrative where you find yourself oddly cheering for the antagonist, where characters don't neatly fit into categories of good or bad but exist in that intriguing gray area of complexity. They carry their own emotional baggage, making them undeniably human. Adrian Franklin, in particular, leaps off the page as a remarkably well-crafted character.

The author maintains reader engagement throughout, weaving a compelling tale. Their writing style bears a resemblance to a fusion of Stephen King and Jo Nesbo—concise yet infused with profound philosophical layers that enrich the narrative.

This is the sort of book that keeps you awake at night, delving into themes of revenge and moral ambiguity, all while at its core, it's a story of profound love and the extraordinary lengths we're willing to go for the people we cherish.

I urge you to procure a copy of this book and immerse yourself in the beautiful narrative of Elmer and Adrian.

The main focus of the story is set in two characters: Adrian Franklin and Conner Wallace. They are introduced to the police by Elmer Ray, who supposedly knows who is the murderer.
The story goes back and forth, to the present and past, showing the mysterious backstories of these unlikely, violent characters.
The author keeps you highly focus on the storyline from beginning to end, not only because we want to know about the correlation between the suspects and the murder, but because the writing style of this book is very captivating and chilling.
A great thriller to be enjoyed by many readers, in my opinion. Highly recommend it!

This book had me hooked from beginning to end. I love the types of books you root for the villain. The one’s characters aren’t good or bad but fall into the middle. Complicated with baggage and most of all human. Adrian Franklin, is a great character that jumps out of the page. The writer does a nice job of keeping readers interested and writing a compelling story. His style would be a mixture between King and Nesbo. Short, concise and to the point but with philosophical depth that moves the story. This is the kind of the book that leaves you awake at night. Revenge and grey morals. But at the heart a story of true love and how capable we are of taking it to the extreme for the people we love. I highly recommend you get your hands on this book and read the beautiful story of Elmer and Adrian.
