八旗文化「東歐」是一個非常複雜的政治地理概念，原始意思就是「歐洲東部的國家」，但由於過去數十年的冷戰因素，「東歐」是受蘇聯極權統治的區域，人民生活在「鐵幕」中，對照組就是自由、民主、富裕的「西歐」。因此，「東歐」這個詞彙被嚴重醜化，不僅充滿外人的刻板印象，就連在地人都不願使用。如何一秒惹怒東歐的朋友？說他們的國家在東歐就對了。本書的作者塔朋是位浪跡天涯的背包客，他深深了解到世人眼中「典型美國人」的形象，就是自我中心與傲慢，對美國以外的世界一無所知。為了讓美國人多了解一點東歐，他先後在2004年與2009年展開長達三十六個月的歐陸壯遊，把他與路人的相遇以及從他們口中獲得的地方知識記錄下來，成為這本《野生的東歐》。但塔朋首先面臨一個問題：到底「東歐」涵蓋哪些國家？如前所述，我們對「地理上的東歐」的範圍並無定論，到底哪裡才算歐洲的東部？而「政治上的東歐」又經常充滿爭議。塔朋的做法是海納百川，因此除大家習以為常的東歐國家，他又把傳統上不算東歐、卻又跟東歐有關係的國度都納入他的旅行，其中包含接近極圈的芬蘭、希臘的北部、俄羅斯的西部，甚至已經跨入亞洲的土耳其。塔朋一共走訪了二十五個國家，最短停留兩星期，長則駐足數個月。塔朋的目的是想讓世人更加了解東歐，但他採取的不是學院式的縝密考察，收集大量紙上資料，相反的，他會盡可能讓當地人自己說話。塔朋記錄下當地鄉民對自己的民族、歷史、政治、宗教、工作、意識形態的看法，甚至會漫談共產黨、伏特加、美食、家庭、一夜情、鄰居八卦，以及他們多討厭俄國人跟美國人。在作者跟這些鄉民的抬槓中，其實充斥許多刻板印象、道聽塗說、狂熱的民族主義情緒，也不乏性別歧視、種族歧視等缺乏多元思考的「政治不正確」觀點，但這卻真正反映出東歐人的內心世界，他們如何看待自己、看待鄰國，以及眼中的世界。本書不是走馬看花的遊記流水帳，而是希望能透過人跟人的對話與理解，避免世界上許多愚蠢的爭端和干戈。

I was born and raised in San Francisco, California. I've been to 127 countries, but I keep coming back to this magical city because I love earthquakes.

My mom is from Chile and my dad is from France. I spoke Spanish at home, French at school, and English everywhere else. I can get by in Portuguese and Italian, barely survive in Russian, and speak a few other languages like a two-year-old.

I have a degree in Religion from Amherst College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. So I am well prepared to start a church and make lots of money off of it.
