BOOK REVIEW: Mr. Haas, I've been going back and forth for a long time about where I should start. And so it goes on, for 242 pages, five days of interviews between the author and a female reporter. You might think it is boring, but quite the contrary. At first, I was intrigued by the technical challenge that Haas sets himself, by what this tells us about the writing process and the way we read. But soon I found myself laughing with delight, getting involved in the characters, wondering what would happen next. And in the last fifty pages, as Haas and his interviewer draw out the suspense of what is almost an Indiana Jones action sequence (commenting all the while on the author's shifts of perspective, cinematic cross-cutting, and insertion of telling detail), I was literally turning the pages as fast as I could read them.
WOLF HAAS: So have I.
BOOK REVIEW: Unlike you, though, I don't want to start at the end. Actually—
WOLF HAAS: Strictly speaking, I don't start at the end either. I start with the first kiss.
