Petra

Rate this book
The text relates the history of Petra, from the earliest Neolithic settlers, through the Edomites to the Nabateans, the still-mysterious people who created the city as seen today. The stunning photos do full justice to this historical monument, a city literally carves from stone and set in a mountainous wilderness of awesome beauty.

This is interesting and has lovely pictures.
It is really just an overview of the whole history of the region. I would have liked two things: a map of the region (though there is a good map of Petra itself which I referred to often), and a little more about the people of antiquity. What we get here is a chronological political history, which is fine, I guess, as there is little evidence for anything else. But I find it hard to believe that they have found no clues to how these people lived. No pottery, no clay tablets, no wax writing boards, no personal effects of any kind.
I am, of course, obsessed with ancient history, and I got this because I thought it might give me more insight into this ancient civilization. I hope to go to Petra some day, and this did help me to realize how large the area is and what I might see.
