Emily Carr: An Introduction to Her Life and Art

Rate this book
"Some can be active to a great age but enjoy little," observed Emily Carr shortly before her death in 1945. "I have lived." The impressive scope of Carr's art and her unorthodox life are the subjects of art educator Anne Newlands' latest book. In a text that skillfully blends selections from Carr's own writings with illustrated commentary, Newlands creates a delightful look at one of Canada's best-known artists. Emily An Introduction to Her Life and Art will lead you to the West Coast, where Carr spent much of her life in a world of richly drawn First Nations villages and totems, dark, haunting forests, wild beaches and vast skies. There, you will meet the unconventional woman -- "the little old lady on the edge of nowhere," as she called herself -- who helped define the face of Canadian art.

I like this series of books about artists - they're brief and functional with colourful plates of the paintings and just enough information to tickle your curiosity for more. In this case, I'm lucky: Emily Carr was a prolific author as well as artist. I'm going to check out some of her books.

There are a lot of essays and books about Emily Carr and her life and art. I was always intrigued to learn more about her art as she was part of the group of seven artists. This is an excellent summary of her life and art journey which got me excited and wanting to learn more. That’s how I felt after reading it leisurely, and rereading some sections twice or more.
Also news to the ignorant me, Carr was also an accomplished writer! And Newlands writes about her writings and publications - now added to my to-read list.

What a great woman and a great artist!

Bought this book at the museum in Vancouver. It does a good job explaining her art . She was a very interesting woman who took her own path, not an easy one, and created great beauty.
