A young girl, Elyse, aged 10, is spending the summer with her grandmother in Florence, Oregon, where there is hidden in the forest a magical elf, Lenny Hickson. This elf leads Elyse and her unbelieving friend, Josh, on adventures by placing pretty stones and beads in the shape of arrows, guiding them to help people and animals in distress. The children, accompanied by Grandma’s dog, Sadie, first are led to rescue an elderly lady, Mary, who is stuck in the mud of the Siuslaw River as a deadly rainstorm approaches and the tide rises. Later, realizing that the heavy rains have washed away the road and bridge to their homes, Elyse and Josh find themselves trapped, and Mary becomes their invaluable companion on the road to more adventures with Hickson leading the way.
