This story is about a man who goes out to the mountains along the Pecos River, thinking that he can make a living by trapping beaver and trading with the indians. He knows nothing about it, except what he has been told by a former trapper, but figures that the doesn't have much to lose, since he is dying of consumption anyway. He lives long enough to have a wife and son and at the end has an indian burial. Very interesting and entertaining.
