Image analysis now plays a major role in the qualificiation of a wide range of paper properties. Formulation measurement and speck analysis are common and print quality and surface pattern analysis are widely used in R&D environments. Developments in computer hardware have prompted the move to on-line measurements based on vision technology. While on-machine speck analysis is well established, vision technology offers many other opportunities.
