This story is about a little salamander on the quest to conquer his fear of the dark, but in the process his conquers it on his own. I love the colorful graphic of this book. There are simple shapes, but the color pops off the page. This book is great for prek and kindergarten students as it is simple and keeps their interest. The basic plotline is that of the classic journey which will be a story structure students will follow the rest of their learning career.

Pip the salamander is afraid of the dark. His friends tell him to seek out Old Abra the wizard. As he travels he learns that he has to go through the big dark scary woods. And when he gets through he learns that Old Abra has gone over the hills. So Pip climbs over the hills in the dark. When he finally catches up to the wizard, Old Abra makes Pip realize that he doesn't need the wizards help. He just traveled through the big dark scary woods and over the hills in the dark all by himself.

Children can easily relate to this book because it is about a lizard who is afraid of the dark. A lot of young children are afraid of the dark and it takes a lot to get over that fear. The story eventually shows the lizard overcoming his fear of the dark and not being afraid any longer. This is important for children to see so they understand they will not be afraid of their fears forever and that most of them are insignificant.

This has illustrations reminiscent of Steve Jenkins' cut-paper collage work. Pip is a salamander who is afraid of the dark. The frogs suggest that Old Abra the wizard might have some magic that could help. Pip's journey to find Old Abra takes him through a dark wood, a dark tunnel, and through the dark night.

Pip is afraid of the dark and he goes in search of old Abra the wizard to give him magic to be brave. Through his journey he conquers his fear unknowingly. This story teaches us that fear can be overcome when you are not aware of it.The simple text and illustrations help give life to this engaging tale.
