Wow! Richard Sakakida was an amazing young man. How will I ever look at WWII and Japanese Americans the same again?
The first half of the book tells the tale of how he got involved with the U.S. military, unknowingly, and how he became stationed in the Philippines. The second half describes his ordeal once the Japanese military forces invaded the islands. How he survived for almost three years in captivity is amazing. Even more amazing is how he came out a rational and forgiving man, although mentally, physically, and psychologically scared, scars he would carry with him for the rest of his life.
