Hunter x Hunter is still a charming series and I'm determined to continue reading it, but I am SO ready to be done with this Heaven's Arena arc. It's one part pure exposition, one part laughably silly fights between characters I couldn't care less about — at this point, what do we even know about Hisoka? Why should I care about this smarmy clown? He pulls all of his tricks almost literally out of his ass, and I definitely need more to work with in order to get invested into whatever kind of a villain he will end up being. Give me more Gon! I miss Leorio and Kurapika, what have they been up to for the last two volumes? When will we get on with the main storyline of Gon looking for his father? Like I said, I am more than ready to be done with this pointless Arena arc (in the next volume, hopefully!).

I love the concept of Heaven's Arena so much; it doesn't get enough recognition.

Also Hisoka chewing on his own arm and then doing some mathematical magic trick in the middle of a fight is insane. Nobody does fight scenes like Togashi.

This was a pretty good one and is just focusing on Gon and Killuas they train, meet a guy named Wing and his student Zushi, Killua fights him and they advance to the 200th floor and for further challenges, meet Hisoka there, learn the secrets of Ten, Zetsu, Ren and Hatsu and whatever Nen is (mind force) from wing as he teaches them, Gon fights Gido (beyblade/top kinda opponent) and its one of the coolest battles here while later Killua goes to watch Kastro vs Hisoka and its epic, the whole fight secrets and the explanation of their technique is too good! Really enjoyed this volume as it raises the stakes in the battle tower and explains new martial arts/spiritual techniques and offers a great insight to this world! Also Wing is amazing and the art is so fun!

Having Gon and Killua be exposed to a real deadly battle, they were introduced to the new knowledge about Nen. Personally, I was really confused when I first encounter this part in the anime. My head was spinning with all the informations about the techniques, but truly, this was a very intricately made battle system. I mean, I thought the confusion would lasts but it didn't. I was learning about Nen along with Killua and Gon.

The trial battle of Gon with the Nen user Gido was unsurprising. I knew he would definitely lose against him and I didn't expect him to even land a hit either because come on! He was a novice and practically knew almost nothing about Nen. He only learned the technique of Ten, which only served as a defense, not an offense. Though he has a natural unaware knowledge of Zetsu, it was not an offense technique either and can only left him unprotected. But damn, his resolve! He was ready to actually fight without a proper training and willing to literally risk his life just to try the very basic technique he just learned. And he was enjoying it. Oh, that attitude of him! It was still amusing to see his recklessness at this point, but it could be his absolute downfall, I swear! Gon, my baby!

Hisoka and Kastro's fight, that was an incredible one! We get to see how Hisoka fight in the arena. Though it was still not revealed here the true nature of Hisoka's ability, it was really an entertaining and impressive fight! I loved the look on Hisoka's face while fighting. He was so composed and even looked insulting even when he was basically beaten by Kastro and got his hands mutilated. He looked like he can't be bothered by it! At the end, he managed to turn the table in a very unexpected way. He was a true monster in a battle. I liked him a lot, though he is such a creep sometimes.

This battle tower thing is pretty neat, and now that Gon and Kil have gotten to the 200th floor, I wonder how far they'll be going from here - especially considering Hisoka is a potential opponent. And speaking of Hisoka... boy was that a weird (and brutal) fight he had with Kastro o.O

Interested to see how the next volume will continue with this, seeing as this one ended with such a defeat...

description

“No me parece justo adelantarme.

The Heaven's Arena Arc (volumes 6 - 7)

I'm going to be 100% honest with this: I didn't like this arc as much. It was still very strong, and I wouldn't say there are that many bad parts, but the length and purpose of it made me enjoy it less. But that's not necessarily a bad thing as I don't think this arc was supposed to be bigger and better. If anything, this arc serves as a lot of setup for later parts of the series.

Heaven's Arena is disguised as a tournament arc, but truly it's here to explain the magic system. Some good character moments happen here and there and we manage to get deeper into their psyche, but the biggest thing you'll get out of it story-wise is probably the depth of the magic (and, if I remember correctly, this arc only scratches the surface). I guess that's the biggest problem here. Very little is done in terms of advancing the wider story, and the characters aren't really allowed to progress because it would feel cheap to do so in such a small part of the story. Better to save the big character moments for higher stakes situations, I mean.

So what's good about it then? Well, while some people might be bothered by the info dumps (which I wasn't ... I'm a Sanderson fan, what can I say?) the magic system legitimately is fascinating. There are sooooooo many aspects to it. It can get almost hard to follow at times simply because there are a lot of terms to remember, but as long as you can understand the concepts, which are very well explained, then it's a lot of fun to learn about.
I also love how nen was actually set up in previous arcs. There are many feats of power that you do not understand in the first arc, but here they start to make sense. Essentially it's "a wizard did it" ... but ... you know ... it's actually good.

The characters, as I've said, don't get to grow much in this arc. However, we do get to see Togashi build upon what was already there.

There are way fewer characters to talk about here so I'll (probably) make it quick.

Gon: I don't necessarily think that Gon evolves much (if at all) in this arc. However, there are a few things about his character I found really interesting. Those things were present before but I believe this arc made it easier to pick up on.
Side Note: Have I mentioned that Togashi, despite info dumps, can lean really heavily into "show don't tell"? This is especially true when it comes to his characters I think. You have to read into things otherwise you won't really get what he's even trying to do with his characters. This isn't a flaw. You can enjoy the characters without reading into them, but you won't get their complexities this way.
Anyways ... right ... Gon ...
gon continues to show his determination in this arc but you really start to see that it's not just out of pure ... protagonisness ... (it's a word just trust me). He's desperate to prove himself in any way that he can. I believe this is how his abandonment issues manifest themselves. He has to prove himself good enough to be his father's son, otherwise, he doesn't think he even deserves to meet him, which is really devastating to think about. He's a child who believes he isn't worthy to have a father. Or at the very least, not worthy to have the father he has, which is worst in a way. And he has to prove himself by taking on these challenges, all while trying to live up to (what I interpret as) a person who doesn't really exist. Gon's dad is someone who is constantly talked about throughout the series by everyone. Everyone who knows/knew him says he's the greatest Hunter alive, if not ever. He can't be surpassed. He's a legend more than a man, and that legend is all Gon knows ... and he has to somehow live up to that. He has to because otherwise ... why did his father leave him? Why, if not to give Gon time to become strong enough to be worthy of him?
I'm not saying this is the truth necessarily, I'm saying that I think this is Gon's mentality. And it's a really depressing and hunting one because it makes me worried he'll continue to push himself until, one day, he goes too far. And I'm also scared that Gon will never realize this. Facinatingly, as good as he can be at reading and empathizing with other people, he can't seem to do the same for himself.

Killua: ... well, that Gon part was heavy ... let's take a more lighthearted approach to the 12-year-old assassin ...
Killua, I think, so far at least, works best when put next to Gon. He's interesting on his own, but it's his similarities and differences to Gon that draw out those interesting traits (at least for now). Killua is, in many ways, the opposite of Gon. He's cool-headed. He, unlike Gon, refuses to take on any fighter he thinks is stronger than him. He's calculated. He grew up surrounded by family. And yet, just like Gon, he's terribly lonely and in need of connections, and their relationship becomes one of the most, if not the most, important things to him.
On the other hand, where Gon feels he needs to prove himself, Killua already has in some ways and is getting to step away from a life that so far has only been about proving himself, and seeing what he does with it is really fascinating. He's getting to live his life for the first time and doesn't really know how not to be a killer.
This arc also gives us some small glimpses into his past and how his family treated him. It really helps you feel more sympathy for the kid.

Hisoka: I'll make this quick. Hisoka, for the most part, is the Joker. Not a rip-off. I'm not calling him that. But the reason he's so interesting to watch, the reason you can't take your eyes away from the pages when he arrives back into the story, is because of the sheer chaos factor of his character. He's powerful, very powerful, but his strength, as we come to find out, is in trickery. You never know what trick he'll have up his sleeve, and you never know whose side he's on. I mean ... Hisoka is always on his own side, that's made pretty clear, but his goals can line up with the protagonist's goals just as easily as they can line up with the antagonist's motivations. You might say he's ... a wild card ... I'll see myself out.
We get one chapter from Hisoka's "perspective" (for lack of a better word) in this arc, and ... I have even more questions than I had before.
Beyond those questions though, one part of Hisoka's description in this chapter was very interesting to me. It says something along the lines of "Hisoka doesn't get stuck in the past". However, I kinda think that's ... wrong(?) Idk if this is intentional but, while I understand that Hisoka doesn't really care about the recent past and moves on very easily, I think in some ways he must be stuck in his own early past. Idk, it just seems like it to me. From his entire personality to small details like naming his abilities on childhood products, parts of him seem to be stuck in the past despite believing otherwise.
I mean ... we'll see, but it seemed that way to me.

------------------------

This arc isn't huge, but it does seem necessary. Nen needed to be thought, Gon and Killua had to learn it to be strong enough for future threats, and the Gon vs Hisoka fight needed to happen sooner rather than later IMO for the story to feel satisfying.

Lots of Ten and Nen and Zetsu and stuff that I don’t really get but I sense that Gon is going to get even cooler. Interesting to see more of Hisoka. That thing with his arm was unexpected and deliciously terrible.

That old graphic style is such a bummer. This time, it was hard to ignore, particularly during Hisoka's fight.

• I kinda felt this arc was an improvement over the exam arc because it didn't feel dragged at all.
• It felt concise,on-point and adequately paced throughout the length of the arc.
• I like Zushi as a character. He is a talented Chap who feels let down when he compares himself with his overpowered, gifted peers. But he never gives up and keeps on trying which is a relatable and admirable trait.
• I also felt the battle sequences to be unpredictable, pacy and engrossing in the arena.
• The good thing is that it also expands the lore by introducing the NEN and its related elements to the story which play an important role in taking the story forward.
• Lot of learning for our protagonists. I consider Killua and Gon as heroes. Sorry, not sorry. Though I missed Kurapika and Lerio in this arc a lot.
• The ending was inevitable and realistic. I mean it makes sense from the characters' current power levels and their journey.
• I am still finding the art not up to the mark. In some panels, it looks like someone has scribbled all over a white paper. I mean the story is good so far, but the art unfortunately has deteriorated.
• It might be due to the Mangaka's bad health or it might be anything. But the art is not up to the mark.
• I did find the explanations related to Nen and the elements very expositionary. I mean the concepts are cool, make no mistake but the way it's explained is unremarkable and bland.
• Which boggles my mind because NEN is the most important aspect of the story. Explaining it in that way kinda removes the impact to a certain extent. Hisoka is a strong antagonist, but I can't help but feel the creeps when he's around.
• Overall, Heavens Arena Arc is an improvement over the Hunter Exam arc

Beta-Pros:
• Pacing
• Characters
• Ending
• Action/Battle sequences

Beta-Cons:
• Explanation of the Nen concept
• Art at times
• Absence of certain characters

Beta-Thoughts: The momentum is well carried out

Beta-Meter: 65%
