A sixteen-year-old boy comes to Jerusalem alone from the War of Liberation and is so far away from Baghdad that he is from there. Alone, he makes a living by distributing newspaper and bicycle missions in the Prime Minister's Office, and without any hesitation dares to dream of a different life. Incredibly, you can tell by the story of the boy Nuri how his family lived in a remote village in the sands, and their neighbors there blind musicians; And how did his father send him to the kibbutz, so that he would at least intervene in the new country; And how he was tasked with getting his family an apartment in the capital.

Amir was born in Baghdad, Iraq. He immigrated to Israel with his family in 1950.

He won the Yigal Alon prize for outstanding pioneering service to the Israeli society. Amir is well-known in Israel for his lectures, articles, radio and television programs and especially for his book, Scapegoat, a semi-autobiographical novel that depicts the integration of an Iraqi-Jewish youth in an Israeli transit camp soon after the establishment of the state. This and other novels by Amir are included in the secondary school sylabus.From 1964 to 1968 he served as adviser on Arab affairs to the Prime Minister of Israel, and as envoy for the Minister of Immigration Absorption of Israel to the United States. In 1984, he was appointed Director General of the Youth Aliyah department of the Jewish Agency.

אני אוהב מאוד את אלי עמיר. משהו בכתיבה שלו מצליח להגיע לדקויות אנושיות, לגעת בעומק הדמויות. הספר הינו המשך ישיר של מפריח היונים ושל תרנגול כפרות. שלושת הספרים בונים יחדיו את סיפור חייו של עמיר מילדות בבגדד ועד ערב גיוסו לצה"ל בירושלים, דרך פרקים במעברות שונות ובקיבוץ. מאוד נהניתי מהסאגה רבת השנים והזירות שעמיר בנה בכתיבתו, והטרילוגיה הזאת מהווה שלם ייחודי.
הספר ארוך מדי לדעתי, ועריכה אגרסיבית יותר, בעיקר בחצי הראשון של הספר, הייתה משפרת אותו. ובכל זאת, מדובר בספר טוב מאוד, של סופר מצויין ואהוב.

An interesting unfolding history of life in Israel in the 1950’s. The best and most moving part was the chapter about Michal’s visit to Nuri’s family’s village. The worst part was the ending. I wonder how this story would have been written by the author 50 years ago, without the time perspective that he has now.

הספר מספר את קורות חייו של נער בן 16 ממוצא עירקי בשם נורי, הנקרע בין חיי הנערות והשובבות לבין מחויבותו המסורתית המשפחתית של היותו בכור. בעצם, זהו ספר המשך ישיר לספר "תרנגול כפרות". שם, נשלח, נורי, שלא ברצונו, על-ידי הוריו לקיבוץ כדי שילמד ויתחנך. כדי שיוכל להשתלב בחברה האשכנזית ובכך, יוכל לעזור לכל המשפחה.

ב-"נער האופניים", אנו למדים שנורי מצא את דרך המלכים להשתלב בקיבוץ ואף החל לחבב את מנהגיהם עד כדי מחשבות לצלוח את מטרותיו ואף, לקחת חלק בבניית קיבוץ נוסף בדרום הארץ. מחשבות וחלומות אלו נגוזים באחת כשאביו קורא לו לעזוב מידית את הקיבוץ ולנסוע לירושלים ללמוד מקצוע ואף להוציא בגרות ולמצוא עבודה בכדי שיוכל לעזור למשפחה להתנתק אחת ולתמיד מהמעברה ולהעבירה לירושלים. וכך, שוב שלא ברצונו (הרי איך ימרה את דברי/הוראת אביו), נורי, עוזב את המקום שאהב ושאהבו אותו ומגיע לירושלים - למקום חדש, זר ומנוכר.

בירושלים, בקשיים ובמאמצים מרובים (כלכליים ונפשיים) מנסה הוא לעבוד, ללמוד, לחיות ולעזור לבני משפחתו. טיפין, טיפין. צעד, אחר צעד. עקב בצד אגודל. בעקשנות מרובה וללא ויתורים הוא מצליח למצוא עבודה, בית ספר שיקבל אותו ללימודי ערב בעוד, הוא עובד בשתי עבודות בוקר. מוצא לו חברת אנשים שעוזרים לו ואפילו אהבה.

הספר מתאר בפירוט רב את החיים בארץ ישראל בשנות החמישים המאוחרות. העולים וקשייהם, תקופת הצינה, המלחמות הפוליטיות והמלחמות הממשיות. כמו כן, מפורטים עד מאוד המנהגים והמסורות של עדת יוצאי עירק. עוד מפורטים הקשיים, העלבונות, תחושת הזלזול ואף, יש לומר, אווירת הגזענות שהם והתימנים חוו.

איזו תחושה נוראית זו להיות עולה חדש במקום בו הרבה אנשים לא כל כך רוצים את קרבתך (מי שלא חווה זאת על בשרו, לא יידע לעולם)?! זה לא רק מסתכם בעזיבת המקום היחיד שאתה מכיר בו נולדת וגדלת, וכן, השפה בה אתה שולט. ולא המקום החדש שאליו מנסה להסתגל מבחינת מזג האוויר, הסביבה, האנשים, השפה והדאגה היום-יומית הקיומית האישית והמשפחתית. אלא, שאתה גם מנסה להתמודד עם הבורות והגזענות המובנת, הסמויה והגלויה. בה מנסים להראות לך בכל דרך אפשרית עד כמה אתה לא רצוי. וזאת, מבלי שבאמת עמדו על האופי, הידע והיכולות שלך.

סוף הספר קצת אכזב אותי. לאחר כל התלאות שגיבורנו עבר בפרטי, פרטים. אפשר היה לצפות שיהיה סיום דרמתי (לטוב או לרע) מאשר הסיום שהיה כאן.

Beautifully written. Gives the feeling as if we've flew back in time to the 50s/60s.

I wish today's politicians would have been more concentrated on the people who they are supposed to publicly serve, and less about what their image is...

ספר מרתק שהוא באמת ״מגנום אופוס״! הייצוג הנרחב לקולות של העם בתקופת קום המדינה הוא מדהים, וניכר שאלי עמיר כתב בדם ליבו. הסיפור בהחלט לימד אודות התקופה והעשיר את ידיעותיי ממש כמו עיון בספר היסטוריה.

The book tells the story of Nuri, a young immigrant from Iraq who was sent, with his family, to a small village composed mainly of blind people. Nuri and his family are not blind. Nuri goes to a kibbutz and then called home by his father to assist his family. Then, Nuri is sent by his father to Jerusalem with the aim of establishing himself in the city and bring his family to Jerusalem. The ambitious Nuri slowly and surely is establishing a place for himself as a messenger for the government. At the same time, he forms romantic relationships with a girl his age from Rehavia who is intrigued by the energetic and handsome young man.

Amir tells the story of immigration, discrimination, exploitation of the Middle Eastern immigration to young Israel during the 1950s. At the same time, this is also a story about family ties, love and hope. It is a beautiful book that is worth reading. Amir captures Israel’s history quite accurately and he does it with skill, beautiful language and captivating descriptions of people and places.
