Read this as a part of Shaker studies’ Wednesday readings.
The lowdown, for those who may not know: a few years after Mother Ann first opened her gospel in America, this chick named Mary Dyer joined the Shakers with her husband and kids. Mary was a demanding lady who disliked it when she didn’t get her own way, so when she decided that things with the Shakers weren’t shaking out for her, she went to her husband and told him that it was time for their family to pack up and go. Unfortunately, Mary was told “no” for what was apparently the first time in her life and threw an absolute tantrum because her usually submissive husband grew a spine and said he and their children were not going to leave the church.
So what did Miss Dyer do? She went around throwing a huge fit to different state legislatures (mostly New York, but she hit up other states as well), lying and telling them that Mother Ann was a drunken whore who was responsible for the despoiling and debauching of a decent chunk of their constituents and that something needed to be done about it RIGHT NOW. That something? Essentially the criminalization of Shakerism. And now that Miss Dyer had been deprived of her husband and children, she suddenly found herself with a surplus of free time, so she decided to devote the all of her time and energy to this endeavor. The revenge campaign lasted the rest of her life. (Spoiler alert: it didn’t get anywhere.)
The Shaker elders and eldresses saw this and said, “No way, Jose! You are NOT going to slander Mother Ann’s good name and try to take the church out because your husband and kids became Shakers.” The church leaders gathered all of the people who had known Mother Ann and went, “Hey guys. It’s not cool what Mary Dyer has been doing. Would you mind writing something testifying about your experience with Mother Ann (AKA that she wasn’t a drunken whore and was actually a godly woman)?” These people were old and upset about what Mary Dyer was doing so said, “heck yes!” And those testimonies are what this little tome is comprised of.
The review:
Read a lot of the testimonies. Zusannah’s has resonated the deepest with me thus far. We just finished Mother Lucy’s testimony (on 6/2/25) and the dates don’t quite line up (she wrote it on 10/6/26 but died in 1821….?) so we’re wondering if she wrote this beforehand or if it was cobbled together from earlier writings. She also doesn’t mention that she was married at the time of writing, which we found interesting. We’ll be examining her journey in more depth next Wednesday…..I can’t wait!
