New Zealand Kiwis rugby league captain Benji Marshall is widely acknowledged as New Zealand's finest player. His performances for the Kiwis in beating Australia to win the 2008 rugby league World Cup and then captaining his country to win the 2010 Four Nations tournament have many people believing him now to be the best player in the world.
Benji Marshall is a living inspiration for myself personally as its humbling to know a Maori boy like myself can make it big time. That's a big reason why I chose to read this book. Not only for myself but because Benji Marshall is a typical New Zealand boy that I can look up to for his originallity, flair, vision and elusiveness on the field that he posseses and for those reasons alone is why he is labeled as a 'once in a life time' player by his peers and leaders of his respected code. The category that this book belongs to is "A diary, autobigrophy or biogrophy" This book was great for me to read as I learnt that there is more to Benji than what is revealed at first glance. My favourite quote from this book is "If you can't handle it piss off home" although this may sound harsh, Marshall took this as a lesson to pick yourself up if you get knocked down and to keep going. Through out this book Benji continues to pick himself up, time and time again. Marshall is the epitome of a champion starting from his share drive , determination and attitude .As you might know Benji has fallen on hard times in the last year but he is still picking himself up and finding a solution to every problem life throws at him. Overall it's a story about how a young Maori boy from Whakatane changed the sport of Rugby League and turned it into a world of his own where the sport is the game but he is the king.
I recommend this book to any young sportsman/sportswomen growing up as it shows the reader anyone can be successful no matter your circumstances. Benji revolutionised the way Rugby League is played, if you're looking for an inspiration ... you have found the right book!
Read this a few years on from when published - Benji's career has been on decline since unfortunately. Interesting to note he foreshadowed an ill-fated move to rugby.
Benji is a well-respected figure whose upbringing prepared him for later adversities. Certainly had to earn the success he achieved later on.
One of the great Kiwis - four shoulder reconstructions, a Premiership and a World Cup by age 23. 2010 Four Nations success was the peak of his career.
what was the most exciting part and why? The most exciting part of this biography was when it talked about his great achievements in his rookie year in the NRL.Because it was really exciting to know what his achievements were when he was young because i was very young and i didn't know what the NRL was at the time.
why would you recommend this text to other? I would recommend this book to others because its a great book its good to learn about a person particularly a celebrity and knowing about their life story.
