Very much phonics based, with plenty of words, and pictures, that reinforce each other. Perfect for the kid who just isn't catching on to how reading works and is starting to think books are evil. I just don't understand the introduction - it makes Otto look like a small child, emigrating from parents. I guess these books just aren't aimed at me.

Very simple text narrates Otto's adventure to space and then what happens when he crashes back to Earth.

This book explains how Otto comes to hang out with monkeys and elephants in later books. Otto has quite the adventure in this, but the words are kept super simple for the most beginner of readers and you definitely need the illustrations to get the full story. Otto is a cute robot and his adventures are sure to draw in readers.

It's super silly because there's monkeys. And it's super silly because the robot land on him head and him smiling and him say, "Hi!" to the rhino. And it's super silly because monkeys is looking at him when him fall on him head and them didn't look at the robot and THEN him look to the rhino. And him ship fall off. I didn't like the robot. The end.

The font choice was poor for a pre reading level, loopy lower case g and a that aren't readily recognized by pre readers. Storyline wasn't very interesting and word choice (smile, paint, laugh) seemed better suited for a higher reading level.

David Milgrim delivers another delightful easy reader for kids just beginning to read. This Otto book is very simple (along the lines of classic Dick and Jane), but with an out-of-this-world twist.

I liked it because there's a robot who leaves his parents and that's sad. But he comes to a rhinoceros and he has to run, run, run!! And he bonks the rhino's horns! And you want to know what happens next? He flies and then he comes down to two monkeys who want his painting and one is sitting down in a chair. And he falls on top of them and then paint goes flattering all over the place and it goes fly, fly, fly! And they all laugh, laugh, laugh. And then it's the end of the book. Thanks! Bye!

I love these early readers, written for those who only have a few words in their reading vocabulary. Much like the "See Jane run" stories, these books are very simple, but the main character is a robot from outerspace who crash landed on earth when he ran out of gas. Now he befriends the animals of the jungle.

I thought it was a good pre-reader book, but needed a few more refinements. The text was too small, and a couple of words were not good pre-reader words. But the story is funny, and the repetition of the words was very good.

Exciting because its one of Natalie's first books she read to us. I like that even though it is set up like a Dick and Jane primer, it is still super fun with the illustrations.

Natalie: I agree with my family. I really liked that book. I started to cry when I heard the sad part when he left. My favorite part was when the monkeys helped Otto.

Otto is cool! He is a very interesting character that needs further exploration/exploring (ie ready for more adventures). I like how he looks and it was funny because I got this book the same time as I picked up I Am Jim Henson by Brad Meltzer (see Otto reminds me of some of the Muppet characters).
