See Peanut give Otto a ride. See Peanut give Otto's friends a ride. See Peanut give more of Otto's friends a ride. See Peanut fall down. Can Otto save the day?
Meet Otto, the star of a new series of Ready-to-Reads with text that is simple enough for the earliest readers, and funny enough for their older siblings. Read, Otto, read!
This is a very simple beginning reader book. Although the sentence structure is very similar to the Fun With Dick and Jane books, this little tale has a pretty funny story and engaging illustrations. The story reminds me of The Mitten, where one little creature (in this case, a ladybug) is the straw that breaks the [elephant's] back. And in the end, everyone is happy. Cute book and truly a Level 1 reader. Our youngest was very proud that she could read the whole thing.
I love these early readers, written for those who only have a few words in their reading vocabulary. Much like the "See Jane run" stories, these books are very simple, but the main character Otto is a robot from outerspace who crash landed on earth when he ran out of gas. Now he befriends the animals of the jungle.
All the animals decide to get a ride on Peanuts the elephant, until Peanuts gets tired and can't ride anymore. So Otto builds a cart and everybody pushes or pulls the elephant.
Very much phonics based, with plenty of words, and pictures, that reinforce each other. Perfect for the kid who just isn't catching on to how reading works and is starting to think books are evil.
Milgrim, David The Adventures of Otto: Ride, Otto, Ride! EARLY READER. Simon Spotlight, 2016. $3.99.
Flip and Flop are walking in the desert. They walk and walk until they are very tired! Luckily Otto and Peanut come walking by. Otto gives Flip and Flop a ride. It isn’t long before more friends need a ride. Everyone is welcome to climb atop Otto for relief from walking in the heat. Otto soon becomes very tired of carrying all of his friends. When Spec, a small tiny creature, hops on top of Otto’s trunk, Otto crashes to the ground. The animal friends then build a wagon to pull Otto to their destination. Once they arrive at the lake, they enjoy a fun day together.
This is a perfect Early Reader. The words are simple yet the story is fun. The illustrations are wonderful! Each reader will delight in the story and in the illustrations.
I really enjoyed See Otto. I thought it was an excellent new series. As an early reader, it uses very few words and only the simplest of storylines. In Ride, Otto, Ride! the author again uses a straightforward, simple storyline and manages a delightful ending with a couple of layers. The art is still energetic and with the addition of new characters on every page, will probably appeal to the readership. However, I was very disappointed in the text for this book. The vocabulary mostly consists of character names, and while they are all actually words, I found that more confusing for an emerging reader. Additionally, it doesn't really build vocabulary or comprehension when used in this way. I'm sure fans will want every Otto adventure, but I don't recommend starting with this one.
Otto is getting a ride from Peanut. Soon, they see other friends and Peanut gives more and more friends a ride. But is there a limit to how many friends Peanut can carry?
The words in this are very simple and repeated a lot, which is perfect for kids learning how to read. Lots of sight words and words easy to sound out in here. The plot line is simple, but the setting and the characters involved are pretty unique. If you have a kid learning to read who loves robots and African jungle animals, snatch this one up. The plot also provides an example of good friendship and some creative problem solving too.

I love Otto books. They are so cute and always have a charming ending. In this one, a bunch of friends are loading up to ride on the elephant, Peanut, and the elephant finally reaching his breaking point. So they make a cart to pull the elephant along in.
Another one the kindergartner loves to read to us. Milgrim's first readers have the simple, repetitive sentences and words that the little one can read on her own. The illustrations and storyline makes it fun and funny.
Grades: K to 3 Genre: Animals Otto is riding on Peanut through the desert. They come across many of their animal friends. They join Otto on Peanut as the ride along. Slowly there are more and more animals and the weight is getting to Peanut. The last straw is the small bug Spec, with that Peanut collapses. Otto then makes a cart that all the other animals push to give Peanut a ride. The story is quite simple and is great for early readers as it uses lots of repetition. The pen and ink drawings are filled with a simple color palette. The animals all have the correct coloring and the desert is in soft brown tones. The character design is fairly simple and features cute squiggly like lines that make them look like they are moving.
Otto the robot and Peanut the elephant are two parts of an odd whole with a See Spot Run readability that's actually fun, though I recommend the series for kids 2-5. In Africa (or thereabouts) Otto is a robot creature who loves his friends in the jungle. Never mind how he got there, that's why they are STORIES with an imaginary bent and should not be taken seriously. Otto needs a ride, but doesn't know how to. Sad. So Peanut and buds show him how it's done, and how fun it is to ride and just enjoy taking the passenger's side. Simple, yet fun.
Ride Otto Ride was a little predictable for my nephew. He liked this book, but did not get the same kick out of this as he did Swing Otto Swing or See Pip Point. This is still a cute enough story, but the humor isn't quite as sharp as it is in the two books previously mentioned.
This book was not my favorite. It was hard to follow and a little scattered. The wording was easy and rhymed so young children would have an easy time reading if they were beginners. However for content, there was not much of a story.
Read and reviewed by Brandon (5): I liked this book. My favorite part was when they were building the cart for Peanut and the end, when they were playing in the water.
Natalie read this to me. These are really too easy for her now, but are still good practice. I continue to enjoy that the story is fun despite the format.
Emergent reader story about Peanut the elephant giving his friends a ride through the desert, until one little beetle puts it over the top. A straw that broke the camel's back, or the beetle that broke the elephant's back.
