Kino's Journey #2

キノの旅 II

Rate this book

How the hell is this book not in the English market? Why the hell am I reading volunteered translations? This should be officially translated and sold in bookstores! This stays hidden in Japan while stupid YA crap books get to be on the shelves. Shame.

Kino's books has this quirky feature where the 'prologue' chapter is actually the epilogue of the 'epilogue' chapter. So once you read the book from start to finish, I'd suggest to read the 'epilogue' first then the 'prologue' chapter. It'd usually make the story much clearer.

As usual, Kino's Journey is a collection of short stories depicting jagged and surreal facets of humanity. The settings varied wildly from town to town, so does the technology and the culture. Yet, even if the people there lived in a world so far apart from ours, in the end, they're only 'too human' much like us.

The title of this volume was borrowed from one the chapter in the book. There, in the land of books (a dreamland for all book lovers), the people loved nothing more than reading, they read all the time except when sleeping, and they boast the biggest number of libraries and bookstores. Everyone's a book fanatic and they always more than ready to talk and discuss and debate and dispute about various authors' works and masterpieces, do be prepared for a lengthy and passionate discourse (non-book lovers beware).

I enjoyed this as much as the first volume. The characters feel a bit less absurd this time around, which takes away some of the stories' charm, but it also makes it easier to connect with the character's experiences. I particularly enjoyed 「優しい国」and 「帰郷」.

Pretty easy read in Japanese too, I read with a physical volume and barely wasted time looking up grammar or vocab. Definitely planning on continuing this series.

I love this series so much, I could comprehend this volume better than the last, so that's great for my confidence level.
The last chapter most certainly the best and really knocked this book from a 4 star to a 5 start book (especially the slight parallels between the characters in this chapter and a chapter in the previous book).

I immediately purchased volume 3, so I'm looking forward to reading more about Kino and her adventures.

To naprawdę dobra historia (lub historie) z cudownym bohaterem, jakim jest Kino. Historie poruszają, zaskakują. Ciężko przewidzieć, jaki koniec będzie miała historia w danym mieście. Polecam z całego serca!

I'm not precisely sure what lead me to read this wonderful series of light novels, some may call it a streak of luck, others just pure coincidence. What a find.

As other have said, I seriously don't understand how this book doesn't have an official translation.

Relying on fan translations to read these (surprised these have gotten official releases after two anime series!)

Liked the stories in volume 1 more, but the last story is so good!

My thoughts after reading "Kino No tabi II"
Written by Keiichi Sigsawa
Illustrated by Kuroboshi Kohaku

This is my second time reading the book, and my first time reading it in Japanese.

This volume was quite amazing, I liked it way better than the first one. It has more stories and the vast majority of them left me quite amazed. Some of them being just 7 pages long, others being almost 50 pages. No matter the length, they were written incredibly, and to be honest, all of them were such an amazing read. And then there was an amazing chapter not included on the table of contents that was so welcomed and such a surprise to read, really made this volume so much more fun towards the end.

The Japanese of these series isn't very difficult, it uses quite the amount of words but always includes the furigana for the difficult ones. I found myself learning a lot of new words and remembering a lot of kanji with them. I would say it's perfect for Japanese study.

In any case, this book made me cry, laugh, and just amazed at the feeling of adventure and life lessons every single story had.

Kino no Tabi - The beautiful world - II is an 8/10

Read a fan-made English translation. This one was not as heavy handed as the first volume, but still exaggerated their stories to the point of being difficult to believe for the sake of their "point." Still, it had a few interesting ideas in it. Good food for thought.

I bought this and volume 1 a long time ago, and only recently got around to reading them. They're good for my comprehension level, though I find that the irony can be a little too overt sometimes.
