The NIV Application Commentary helps you communicate and apply biblical text effectively in today's context.
To bring the ancient messages of the Bible into today's world, each passage is treated in three sections:
Original Meaning. Concise exegesis to help readers understand the original meaning of the biblical text in its historical, literary, and cultural context.
Bridging Contexts. A bridge between the world of the Bible and the world of today, built by discerning what is timeless in the timely pages of the Bible.
Contemporary Significance. This section identifies comparable situations to those faced in the Bible and explores relevant application of the biblical messages. The author alerts the readers of problems they may encounter when seeking to apply the passage and helps them think through the issues involved. This unique, award-winning commentary is the ideal resource for today's preachers, teachers, and serious students of the Bible, giving them the tools, ideas, and insights they need to communicate God's Word with the same powerful impact it had when it was first written.
This commentary strikes the perfect balance between academic content and personal application. The author goes deep without going over the average reader’s head. I’m just a regular theology nerd and found it enjoyable, but there’s enough deep explanation for it to be useful to pastors.
It took me so long to finish because Ezekiel is quite a challenging book, so I had to take some breaks to digest everything. I’ll definitely be reading more from this series.
I've got a bias because Iain Duguid is one of my favorite professors during my time at WTS. This book reminded me so much of him. Appropriately and yet accessibly academic while at the same time richly devotional. If you've wanted to dig into Ezekiel and have found it a confusing book, this is a great place to start.
I read this alongside the Thomas volume on Ezekiel (Welwyn series) and it was night and day. This volume quotes many sources, not always in agreement and makes no exegetical jumps or assumptions. Duguid is obviously an outstanding OT scholar and that shows in his use of the Hebrew language, Covenantal redemptive historical hermeneutic, and overall OT knowledge. He expertly takes each section of the book (often long chapters) and clearly lays out what it means. This series is usually more miss than hit but this volume is outstanding. First section of each chapter exposits and/or exegetes the Scripture, then the bridging context and the contemporary application sections does what the names suggest. His application is particularly pertinent and you can tell that he is a pastor. Outstanding application. I went from not having a clue about Ezekiel in my daily readings to having a solid grasp of the details of the story but the overarching story of creation, de-creation and re-creation is the key in this book. Pick up and read! Highly recommended!
Wonderful commentary on Ezekiel. Provides an overview of the original meaning, bridging context between then and now, and a contemporary significance. Iain Duguid is very knowledgeable on the whole book and provides clarity on the temple vision. I also love his sense of humor throughout the book. If you're doing a bible study on Ezekiel, this is the book to go alongside with it.
One of three commentaries I used preaching through Ezekiel. Generally solid and occasionally insightful. At times Duigid’s Amillennial approach caused him to over-spiritualize the text.
Great commentary on the book of Ezekiel. I’ve always enjoyed Duguid’s ability to communicate the author’s original intent while also faithfully following that intent to God the Author’s intent to glorify his Son.
This series has a special purpose that drives it. Every chapters exegetes the Scripture, then moves to Bridging the Context between the original audience and us, followed by a Contemporary Significance section.
Duguid has written a Christ-exalting, Gospel-centered, and practical commentary on an often overlooked book of the Bible.
This NIV Application Commentary is not my favorite series by any stretch of the imagination. However, this volume on Ezekiel by Duguid is tremendous. The third section of each chapter was often superfluous, and the "meat" that I was looking for was typically in the first or second section of each chapter. I pulled quotes from this commentary multiple times while preaching through Ezekiel.
Excellent commentary on a very difficult book of prophesy. First time using this series and like the format to take the scripture to interpretation to application. Not the first book I have read by Dr. Duguid and his style and humor are always refreshing.
We hear so much about The books of Daniel and Revelation and end-times UT there is so much in Ezekiel that helps us understand the character of God, His relationship with his people, and His plans for us now and in the future.
This is a superb commentary, rich in theological detail and full of incisive application. I've always been a bit confused by the 'Bridging Contexts' section and I still am to be honest. But other than that this is a great guide to a difficult book.
I didn't read all of it, but I've enjoyed every chapter/section that I read and benefited from it. I particularly enjoyed the introduction, which wasn't too long. Highly recommend it for preachers and anyone who want to understand Ezekiel and apply in their lives.
The 5 stars might be even more for the book of Ezekiel than the commentary, but Duguid’s insights and teaching were incredibly helpful in making sense of and learning to love this challenging book of the Bible.
Looking at Biblical prophesy is a difficult task - this book does good work addressing the subject material. It offers several perspectives and ties the material to today's contemporary purposes.
I have just finished the NIV Application Commentary on Ezekiel by Iain M. Duguid. Zondervan, 1999, 568 pp.
This is a Reformed devotional commentary although at 552 pages of text it took me 3 months reading comfortably for comprehension and taking some notes.
As Dr. Duguid jokingly says, Ezekiel provides the solutions to the sin of this world, salvation in Christ and our eschatological hope.
This commentary addresses each section of scripture over 15 odd pages which is perfect for a single session of reading, 3 to 4 days a week.
After reading the text in the book, there are three sections: - Original Meaning - Bridging Contexts - Contemporary Significance
Of great strength in this commentary is that the original situation is briefly explored, the bridging context explores theological themes and, by and large, the final section provides a Christological solution to the sins addressed.
Additionally, Duguid relates the issues of the exile to creation and/or previous covenants and clearly demonstrates a Christological solution to sin. He basically provides a big picture theology of the Bible culminating in the 'goal' (telos) of Christ.
It is the Christological focus which makes the book beneficial.
I have provided a couple of pages by way of encouragement to take up and read. Ezekiel is fast becoming my favourite prophet and is profitable for understanding and living the Christian life.
