I STARTED to read a book called, "Dead Water" by Anthony Giangregorio. It's an 8 book series and I love reading series books because you get to see what happens to the characters. In total the series is 2,252 pages long. I thought, "WOW...this is going to be like Harry Potter of the Zombie world."

I am on Chapter 15...but while that seems like I'm very far in the book, in reality I'm on page 40. Yes, I'm on page 40 and on Chapter 15. Why is this? EVERY chapter is a minimum of 3 pages and a maximum of 5. Those aren't chapters, those are reports on your summer vacation when you were in Elementary school! It seems that every chapter becomes more and more grueling than the next.

I knew I was in trouble when the first chapter ended with, "As Henry walked out to his car, he had no idea he would never see his wife alive again." OR OR OR "And so began Jimmy's Promotion at Pineridge and the beginning of the end of the world as we know it." The author effectively destroys and suspense with the end of these....chapters. He does not allow us to love the characters or actually become invested in their lives. I knew Henry's wife for LITERALLY three pages. I don't care if the bitch dies (and she did...if you didn't understand that). I know when Henry comes home she'll try to kill him. After she eats the cat...which I didn't know they had.

The author chose not to spend time on ANY set up and got right to the horror because in reality...that's all he cares about. He's a lazy write and I'm going to read the rest of the book because I bought it. However, the rest of the series will not be read because by page 40...I want to kill the author...or drink the zombie causing water because if I had to read the rest of the series...I would rather die than read the drivel he has come up with.

Decent zombie fare, basically one of those Syfy zombie movies turned into a book. It's obviously stretched from its original intended length.

Hopefully, the next one will be more focused/better

I read this in two days. I couldn't put it down! I'll admit this isn't the most well written book, but even the author admits to his own mistakes leaving a note about it being self edited. The first in a series always lags. Does anyone remember how boring HP & the Sorcerer's stone was? It took me two years before I picked up the second. Let's not even get started on the Box Car Kids ;)

Giangregorio does attempt to skip as much of the "boring" stuff as possible, most likely being a gore fan himself. That does put in a loss as you don't feel much for some of the characters that die off early. (Sorry Mrs. Watson.) But some of the most terrifying things, for me, were in the character description. For instance, the detail he went into about the level of disturbance of one soldier stationed to contain the mess horrified me! My heart was racing any time action presented the group. The author offers some comedy into his work even noting on how "The dead may be walking, but to the insects of the world it was just another day."

The book didn't leave me impressed on Giangregorio's skills as an author but he did tell a good story that made me anticipate what to expect next from Book 2. The ending came on suddenly which forced me to jump up and rush to my computer, first to write this review in hopes someone will read it and give this book a chance, then buy Dead Rain from my amazon.com wishlist.

I, personally, enjoyed this book a lot and look forward to continuing the series.
Good Luck.
