This is not a book about making art. It is a book about doing what you want to do, independently. The idea is that You Can Do It if you really want to strike out and live the life that you want to live, doing the things that you want to do. What a great idea, and how full we all are of dreams to do just that.
Making it On Your Own gave me serious and jubilant inspiration to strike out on my own as an artist, to start my own business and run my own show. And I did. The six months after I read this book were quite the adventure, I must say. I was full of resolution and conviction that I could do it, that I could live my dream.
Thank God I got out before I was a total financial ruin.
Edwards' book is a great pep talk, but for whatever reason it did not equip me with solid tools to really make it happen, or to make a reasoned decision about the change. I shouldn't have done it, at least not then, but my inflated confidence and subsequent mistake were brought about in part by books like this.
