(Controlling Krysta is the novella-length sequel to NY Times Best-seller Training Tessa.)
26-year-old grad student Krysta James takes a receptionist job with Maddox Brothers, Inc., but since she’s lost her scholarship, she’s still not sure how she’ll afford to finish her doctorate. She tries to ignore the heat she feels whenever she's near her strange boss Mason Maddox, determined not to allow herself to fall for another selfish rich guy after what happened last time.
Dixon Maddox is planning to leave for Michigan soon to rekindle his romance with Tessa, but he’s worried about leaving his brother. He notices that Mason is attracted to Krysta and tells her the heart-wrenching story behind his brother’s unusual behavior. Against her better judgment, Krysta signs a contract with Dix to do anything his brother asks of her, including bondage and punishment, in return for the money she needs to finish her education. But just as Krysta gets to know Mason and discovers the lovable side he was keeping under wraps, he finds evidence that she’s betrayed him. And if she chooses to stay at his ranch, she will be punished.
Meanwhile, Dix hears that Tessa may have a “boyfriend” up north and is desperate to get her back. He realizes there’s something he knows about Tessa that he’s sure no one else in her small town in Michigan does, and he has no qualms about using her sexual inclinations to master her and make her his again.
Content warning: This novella contains inappropriate office behavior, spankings, whippings, floggings, bondage, anal sex, and unusual use of horseback-riding equipment (but no actual horses).
I listened to the audio book version that ran just over three hours, and the sequel to a story I did not read. I found that I was not lost following the story; then again, it is erotica.
The story and it predecessor revolve around two brothers who are born into wealth and now run a business together. They hire different women to work in their office and end up getting into BDSM relationships with them, which the women are happy to oblige. I have not read erotica but from what I have heard, this seems to be a common theme.
The second story focuses on the brother Mason and the new receptionist Krysta. Krysta is attracted to Mason despite the fact that he keeps strange animal trophies in his office and does not speak much.
To make a long story short, the plot is not that impressive and there is a great need for suspension of disbelief. I find it hard to believe that even a woman who was a serious practitioner of the lifestyle, which Krysta is not, would just agree to become her bosses sub during the first week of work.
That leads to the question, is the sex good? In my opinion, it is interesting, and it is hot. The parts that are in first person perspective are enjoyable while Krysta narrates what is going on.
That is another thing. The narration switches between first person perspective, to third person perspective. I guess the reason that was done was to tell the two different stories going on. You have Krysta’s seduction of Mason, and you have the follow up to the other brother’s story with the woman from the first book. I am not sure that approach works, but again, it is erotica.
I guess I would recommend this book to people who are already into erotica. This is a short story with plenty of titillation and a well thought out, if not convenient plot.
Wow not many reviews LOL! I think the only reason I gave this a 4 was due to it not being longer and pretty much the same cover. I wished they changed it up a bit to differentiate between Krysta/Mason's book and Dixon/Tessa's book. I felt Krysta and Mason got short changed in light of learning about more about Dix and Tessa. WHICH is great I love them both! But I wished it was longer so we could have seen more of Mason and Krysta...cuz OMIGOD I wanted to know more! Something about Mason. Everyone loves Dix, but omigod I swooned over Mason since the first book of Hot Texas Bosses! I don't know why? Maybe... The mystery, the fact that underneath that sad controlled exterior lay a wounded, playful, and domineering man who oozed even more sex appeal! He was like...I'm envisioning a tootsie lollipop that you lick til you get to the center and...yeah you get through the layers and to the center and an amazing guy shines through. Yeah I'm all for that!
I definitely recommend and wish for maybe a follow up someday to get some more of these four! VERY HOT!
Glad that Dix and Tessa were a side note, seemed they may take over more of the story than they really did - but wow, Mason and Krysta were a dynamic pair. Things happened that you saw coming a mile away, but the reactions were refreshing, so it didn't ruin the story.
Nothing spectacular, but nothing bad either, a pretty good read overall!
This was a good book. It is probably more a 3.5 star than an all out 4 star. Like other reviews I read I also wish that Ms. Sinclair had left Dixon and Tessa out of this book and just focused on Mason and Krysta.
I liked Training Tessa better and felt that Mason's problems were too easily resolved in this book. Sex was hot and if I was only rating the book on that I'd give it a 4 star.
