Welfare Racism analyzes the impact of racism on US welfare policy. Through historical and present-day analysis, the authors show how race-based attitudes, policy making, and administrative policies have long had a negative impact on public assistance programs. The book adds an important and controversial voice to the current welfare debates surrounding the recent legilation that abolished the AFDC.
This book was a fantastic guide through all aspects of welfare racism. It began with helpful definitions of controlling images, discussed the history of welfare racism from the beginning of the program until now, how it keeps the poor in poverty, why we should combat it, and how. The book includes several case studies from different regions to illustrate welfare racism in action, and has fantastically accurate studies and figures. The text was a bit dry, but the quotes before each chapter were apalling or thought-provoking enough to incite me to continue.
The description on here is pretty extensive, so you get the idea. Seems really, really good even if a bit awkwardly written. I only got to read a tiny section, but will hopefully read a bit more later in the semester.
